Abstract

Furnace is of type in which charge is supported on refractory base resting on steel bottom plate, and enclosure complete with heating jacket is lowered over it forming gas tight joint so that controlled atmosphere or vacuum may be employed. Refractory is subject to loss of absorbed water and reaction with e.g. fluorine; casing with e.g. steel sheet welded to bottom plate tends to heat/stress failure. Invented base is arched and rests on water-cooled 'O' ring of e.g. silicone, which seals central vault of arch so that pressure under it may be reduced slightly below that in enclosure, to obviate pressure stress on base and prevent leakage contaminating process atmosphere.
