Abstract

358,363. Casting machines. FRITZSCHE, P. C., 51, Sidonienstrasse, Leipsic, Germany. Dec. 9, 1930, No. 37172. Addition to 342,861. [Class 83 (i).] In a centrifugal casting machine as set out in the parent Specification, in which electrical heating elements are provided inside the melting chamber, means are now described for the supply of a neutral gas to the furnace to prevent oxidation of the material being cast or of any parts of the furnace subject to heat. The neutral gas such as nitrogen or hydrogen is supplied to the furnace by piping 14, a slip joint 13, further piping 12, part of which is flexible, and a refractory tube 11. The material 4 to be cast is placed at the mouth of a mould 7 in the melting chamber which is rendered airtight by a cover 9; neutral gas is supplied prior to melting the material at a pressure slightly above atmospheric so that the oxygen in the chamber is sufficiently rarefied, the material is then melted and rotation of the machine commenced. The oxygen in the melting chamber may be further eliminated by burning in it a suitable material or liquid such as a candle or spirit, either as the cover 9 is being sealed, or by igniting electrically after sealing ; a pressure gauge 15, which also acts as a safety-valve, is inserted in the supply pipe for the neutral gas. The counterweight 3, shown in the Figure, may be replaced by an extra furnace of equal weight.
