Abstract

A container having, in addition to a gamma-ray screen, a material for capturing neutrons in good contact with inserts for dissipating the resulting heat. Pref. the neutrons are captured in wood impregnated with boric acid or in blocks of material rich in B and H held by a suitable binder. Neutron sinks comprise polyethylene, colemanite (3B2O3.2CaO.5H2O), pandermite (6B2O3.5CaO.6H2O), boric acid (H3BO3) or boric glass, pref. bound by plaster, Al cements or epoxy or polyester resins. Steel, Cu or Al alloy rods or fins passing through or between the neutron sinks dissipate the heat to the outside of (cylindrical) packs for storing or transporting radioactive sources.
