Abstract

Olefin polymers are prepared with a catalyst consisting of the reaction product of a transition metal cpd (TiCl4) with an organo metallic cpd (pref. organo magnesium complexed with an ether), the catalyst being pretreated with an olefin (pref. ethylene) or hydrogen for up to 120 sec. at 40-140 degrees C. An organo aluminium activator is used. An inert support MgO) may be dispersed in the Grignard reducing agent. Pretreatment allows control of mol. wt. distribution of polymer, i.e. ethylene control of mol. wt. distribution, hydrogen narrows it.
