Abstract

Ingot mould for use in casting ferrous metals comprises means for heating its upper part by means of heat generated by an exothermic mixture packed round its outer wall and surrounded by a layer of heat insulating material, ignition of the mix taking place through horizontal channels in the ingot mould fined with the mixture and coming into direct contact with the melt as it rises in the mould. The application of external heat slows down the cooling of the ingot thereby improving porosity and segregation in the steel.
