Abstract

2-Substd-6-methyl-4-pyrimidones Title cpds are prepd by reacting beta-amino-crotonamide with an ester RCOOR' (where R and R' are alkyl hydroxy-, amino-, nitro- or halo-alkyl, phenyl or alkyl-, hydroxy-, amino, nitro-, or halo-phenyl, R contg. 1-8 and R' 2-8C atoms) in the presence of an alkali-metal (pref. Na, K or Li) or an alkali-metal alcoholate drived from a 1-8C alkanol or phenyl-(1-8c alkanol). The process gives high yields of 2-R-6-methyl-4(3H)-pyrimidones useful as intermediates for various synthetic organic chemicals.
