Abstract

The sodium cycle for hard water is effected using a weak (carboxylic) cationic exchange resin in the Na-form, obtained by treating the resin with a NaHCO3 soln. contng. 0.25-5% Na2CO3, NaOH, and 5-10% NaCl. The soln. is used in amt. up to 300% of the theoretical. The resin is initially converted to its Ca-Mg form followed by total exhaustion using water contng. more than 3 mval/l TAC and TH (mval=m. equiv. TH = total hardness, and TAC = total alkali titre using methyl orange indicator). The resin is then regenerated using 5-10% NaCl soln. in amt. 300-400% of the theoretical. Useful in conjunction with boilers.
