Abstract

Scale formation is removed and inhibited in boilers in steam generators by incorporating with the water from which steam is generated under pressures ranging from 15 to 1100 psi. an alkali metal salt of nitrilotricarboxylic acid, e.g. a dosage of 0.1 - 1000 ppm of tri-sodium nitrilotri-acetate, and boiling the water. The pH of the boiling water is preferably made at least 9 e.g. by adding NaOH, Na2CO3 or an alkaline phosphate. Li or K salts of the said acid may be used, in which the carboxylic acid groups may be acetic or propionic acid. The salt may be added in the form of a solution or as brignettes also containing soda ash or phosphates.
