Abstract
Suitable for, e.g. manufacture of steel from molten iron. Simplest form comprises U-section chamber. Metal poured from vessel through slag layer in entry limb, on which reaction gas is blown. Entrained slag particles react with metal during descent in limb. Horizontal passage leads to exit limb, also slag covered and blown with reaction gas. Metal/slag level in exit limb raised by various means, e.g. partial vacuum, supplementary gas admitted below surface, or electromagnetic field.
