Abstract

1,038,093. Reclining chairs. GENERAL STEEL PRODUCTS Inc. May 8, 1963 [May 9, 1962], No. 18135/63. Heading A4J. A self balancing reclining chair fixture 36 comprises a base link 38 affixable to a base member 14 of a chair and a seat link 50 affixable to a seat side frame member 22. A bell crank 54 is pivoted at 42 to base link 38 and at 60 to seat link 50. A rear link 46 is pivoted at 44 to base link 38 and at 48 to seat link 50. Links 54, 46 support seat link 50 on base link 38 for swinging movement between normal and reclined positions of the chair. The limit of the normal and reclined positions is defined by a pin 62 on seat link 50 engaging in a slot 64 in bell crank 54. Seat link 50 is pivoted at 48 to a back link 66. A control link 70 is pivoted at 72 to back link 66 and at 74 to bell crank 54. When the back link 66 is pivoted rearwardly about pivot 48 link 70 will swing seat link 50 upwardly and forwardly. The position of pivot 74 is such that the pressure of an occupant of a chair against the back will balance the weight of the occupant on the seat so as to maintain a static balance of the chair throughout its range of movements.
