Abstract

The invention relates to non- destructive testing apparatus, particularly the control of the relative positions of one or more test probes and the test piece. In order to avoid the errors that frequently occur by changes in the clearance between the testing apparatus and the test material resulting from movement of the test material and/or surface irregularities in the test piece, the invention proposes a method of controlling the relative positions of test probes (6) and test piece in which lateral movements of the test piece from its path through the testing apparatus are detected by sensors (2) and the position of the test probes is adjusted in response thereto. In this way, the clearance between the test probe or probes and the test piece can be maintained within predetermined tolerances.
