Abstract

The present invention seeks to improve acid-catalyzed (e.g. HF) alkylation of isoparaffins with olefinic feed streams to enable lower reaction temperatures to be used, by a process comprising: (a) separating an isoparaffin/normal paraffin mixture (11) in a separation zone (10) at separation conditions selected to provide (i) an isoparaffin concentrate and (ii) a normal paraffin concentrate (b) reacting the isoparaffin concentrate (13) with an olefinic feed stream (1) in admixture with an acid- acting catalyst (7) in a reaction vessel (5) at alkylation conditions selected to produce a normally liquid alkylate product (21) and (c) introducing at least a liquefied portion of the normal paraffin concentrate (16) into the reaction vessel (5) and therein vaporizing the normal paraffin material so as to cool, via indirect contact (18), the isoparaffin/olefinic stream reaction mixture.
