Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare high purity isobutylbenzene, by contacting a mixture of isobutylbenzene and secondary butylbenzene with a specific catalyst in the presence of m-xylene or tetralin, thereby alkylating only the secondary butyl benzene.
CONSTITUTION: An aromatic hydrocarbon mixture containing isobutylbenzene and secondary butylbenzene is made to contact with an aluminum halide catalyst (e.g. aluminum chloride, etc.) in the presence of m-xylene or tetralin. The secondary butylbenezene is selectively trns-alkylated by this process, and the isobutylbenzene is recovered from the resulted reaction mixture. The aromatic hydrocarbon mixture used as the raw material is obtained by the alkylation reaction of benzene with butyl halide, etc. in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst. The reaction temperature is 0W60°C, pref. 20W30°C. The isobutylbenzene can be separated easily, by the distillation etc. of the trans-alkylated product.
