Abstract

Process and apparatus for coating a conductor with a thermoplastic copolymer, wherein the conductor having a core and a plurality of flexible conductive tapes wrapped around it is advanced and an insulating cover is extruded in spaced-apart relationship with the advancing conductor; the method being characterized in that it comprises extruding the shell at an extrudate temperature above the melting point of the copolymer, but as close as possible to said melting point; expanding the extrudate to the outside of the conductor, for a predetermined time to cool the copolymer and initiate the crystalline growth of the copolymer; and arranging the insulating cover concentrically around the conductor, while the insulating cover is further cooled.
