A servo-assisted rack and pinion steering system, comprising pinion means, including: a pinion shaft mounted to rotate, and a pinion mounted to said pinion shaft to rotate therewith; an elongated rack bar for connection to the steering wheels of a vehicle and mounted to move longitudinally, said rack bar including a rack geared in drive engagement with said pinion; a cylinder surrounding part of said rack bar and having sliding fluid sealing ends with said rack bar, and a pair of ports; a piston mounted on said rack bar within said cylinder, between said cylinder ports; a valve including: a valve body, a first and a second ports in said body connected to respective ones of said cylinder ports, a third and a fourth ports in said body for connection to a source of supply of fluid under pressure, and a valve spool mounted on said body for axial movement in order to couple the ports of said cylinder to the supply source in selected directions of fluid flow; and a coupling member for converting the rotational motion to linear, connected between said pinion shaft and said valve spool to effect axial motion of said valve spool in response to the application of a rotary steering motion to said spindle. pinion.
