Abstract
A method of recovering copper from sulphided copper ores which comprises forming one of said ores in finely divided form in an aqueous solution containing ammonium sulfate and free ammonia, passing said suspension at a pressure not exceeding 0.70 kg Manometric/cm2 successively through a series of independent closed leach vessels, keep the temperature of the suspension within the range of 50ºC to 80ºC and keep it a few degrees C higher in each of the successive containers of at least the first several containers than in the previous container in the series, vigorously shake the suspension in each container while oxygen is introduced into each container and while an oxygen-containing gas is vigorously recirculated from above the mass of the suspension in each container until the interior of said mass at a substantial depth below the surface of said mass, remove from the last container in the suspension series containing dissolved copper complexed with ammonia in the aqueous phase and copper-depleted mineral matter in the solid phase, and separate the copper-containing solution from the undissolved solids.
