Abstract

In a compacting roller having two rolls mounted in respective frame portions 2a, 2b connected for rotation about a vertical axis by a resilient joint 3, two pneumatic tyred drive wheels 12 mounted on the output shaft of an engine/gear-box unit 5, 6 each engage the two rolls one on each side of the central longitudinal plane of the roller, and the engine/gear-box unit 5/6 is connected by a swivel joint 7 to one frame portion 2a and by a resilient pivot 9 to a steering handle 8 which is connected by a resilient pivot 10 to the other frame portion 2b. When a lateral force is applied to the steering handle 8, the handle turns about the pivot 10 and a horizontal force produced at the pivot 9 tilts the engine/gear-box unit 5, 6 sideways so that one drive wheel 12 is forced between the rolls to rotate the frame portions 2a, 2b about the joint 3. Vibrators 13a, 13b are driven from a pulley 17 through a belt drive and flexible shafts.
