Abstract
Novel compounds of the formula in which the R's, which may be the same or different, each signify H, F, Cl or C 1-5 alkyl radicals, n is 2 or 3 and either A denotes H and B denotes OH, or A and B together denote a carbon to carbon bond may be obtained (a) by treating a 2,4-dihalo-butyrophenone of Formula III with a 1,3-alkylene thiourea of Formula II in the presence of a solvent to yield a compound of Formula I in which A is H and B is OH, in the form of an HX acid addition salt, where X is Br or Cl, (b) by dehydrating a compound of Formula I in which A is H and B is OH, which may be in free base or acid addition salt form, by treatment with an acid to yield a compound of Formula I wherein A and B together denote a carbon-carbon bond, in the form of an acid addition salt. The acid addition salts may be converted to free bases in conventional manner. Starting materials of Formula III may be formed in situ by halogenating a corresponding 4-chlorobutyrophenone. Pharmaceutical compositions having antidepressant activity and (when n=2) anorexigenic activity, comprise compounds of Formula I above, in the form of the free base or a pharmaceutically acceptable acid addition salt, in association with a pharmaceutically acceptable diluent or carrier, in forms suitable for oral or parenteral administration.
