Abstract

Silicone flexible moulds are prepared by forming a layer of an organopolysiloxane fluid composition on the surface of a master pattern, curing the composition to form an elastomer by means of a curing agent provided by the surface of the master pattern and removing the cured elastomer from the master pattern. A curing agent may be additionally incorporated into the organopolysiloxane composition itself, preferably substantially less than incorporated in the master pattern. The master pattern may be smooth or embossed. The master pattern may be made (i) by coating a substrate e.g. a sheet of paper or fabric with a thermoplastic composition e.g. of P.V.C. containing the curing agent and fusing, or (ii) by applying a solution of the curing agent on a smooth or embossed sheet of paper and evaporating the liquid or (iii) by coating the surface of a premade, smooth or embossed master pattern with a composition including the curing agent and e.g. one or more film-forming polymers e.g. polyvinyl chloride or polymethyl methacrylate. The coat ing composition may advantageously include a dulling agent e.g. finely-divided silica. In the examples, a flexible mould is made for use as a casting band in the manufacture of plastics sheet material. The mould is also preferably provided with a supporting substrate of non- woven, woven, knitted or felted material, metal sheet or gauze or glass fibre or gauze.
