Abstract

An automatic gunsystem comprises a gun having a movable breech member and a drive for the breech member for moving the member from an ammunition infeed position to a firing position. The system is provided with a magazine for ammunition 12, having an ammunition exit passage 40 opening externally of the magazine and at least one interior storage compartment 56-1 to 56-10 opening at one end into the exit passage 40 and adapted to contain a. row of ammunition extending lengthwise of the compartment. A flexible conveyer band 44 has ends 44d, 44f extending externally of the magazine- and an intermediate portion embracing the ammunition. One end 44f of the belt is anchored so that endwise feeding of the other end 44d transports the articles successively to the exit passage the conveyer band drive 48 being selectively operable independently of the breech member drive to effect intermittent feeding of ammunition to the gun while the breech member may be driven continuously. In the construction shown the end 44d of the bend 44 is attached to a take-up spool 50 of the band drive 48. The exit passage 40 of the magazine projects into an ammunition infeed guide 26 of the gun. The ammunition is fed into open chambers in the breech member which is a rotatable cylinder. The breech cylinder drive comprising a motor and a Geneva mechanism is coupled to the band drive 48 through gearing and a selectively operable electro-magnetic clutch (Figs. 1, 5, 8, not shown). A cam of the breech cylinder drive actuates a gun firing switch (Fig. 9, not shown). The operation of the magazine and gun is controlled by a manually operated electrical circuit. The gun may be of a multiple barrel type with the barrels remaining stationary or being rotatable.
