Abstract

A trigger mechanism for an automatic firearm disposed in a trigger box 1 and having a lever 21 for catching and holding the breech block (not shown) in a rearmost position and a trigger 10 having an associated part 29 for displacing the catch lever from its position where it projects into the path of the breech block, is characterized by the provision, on the same pivot 9 as the trigger 10, of a plate 31 which is rotatable relatively to the trigger and is provided with two sectors 32, 33 of different radii separated by a steep flank, the catch lever 21 having a hook shaped lug 25 which engages the larger radius sector 32 when the trigger is pulled and which drops on to the smaller radius sector 33 when the trigger is released. The plate is biased by a spring 34 to rotate clockwise as shown in the Figure, where the trigger is in the released position. When the trigger 10 is pulled, lug 29 engages lever 21 and rotates it to withdraw its end 23 from the breech block, the hook 25 moving away from plate 31 which is then rotated by its spring to place sector 32 behind the hook to prevent the lever moving back into a block engaging position. When the trigger is released its pin and slot connection 35, 36 with the plate delays the return movement of the latter until near the end of the trigger release movement when the plate rotates allowing the hook to snap on to sector 33 and present its end 23 to engage the block. The device is shown in a firing mechanism having a hammer 2 provided with bents 8, 18 engaging respectively a trigger sear 7 and a part 17 which is withdrawn from its bent by the action of a lever 19 operated by the forward movement of the breech block. The hammer 2 is provided with a device 41 pivoted thereto which moves the hammer further, when the device is contacted by the breech block on hand cocking, than would otherwise be the case. In automatic firing this further movement is achieved by the inertia of the hammer, the bent 8 and sear 7 being arranged to reengage only after this further movement, to prevent hammer being caught by trigger lever 6 when the trigger is released with the breech advancing. This prevents a cartridge being introduced into a heated barrel without being fired.
