Abstract

An alternator, e.g. for use in road vehicles, includes a casing 37, 38 having a detachable end cover 39 carrying a voltage regulator 71, 72 controlling current flow through the alternator field winding 21 to which it is connected via detachable flexible leads whereby when the end cover is partially removed the leads can be detached thereby permitting complete removal of the regulator and cover, and the regulator includes components sensitive to the alternator output for controlling the conduction of a main transistor 29 through which current flows from the field winding and which is positioned adjacent an end cover hole 76 through which cooling air flows around the transistor to cool same. The transistor is carried by a heat sink 71 which, together with a printed circuit board 72 carrying the remaining regulator components except a temperature sensing thermistor (35), Fig. 1, are bolted to the cover which is held in position by two bolts (57, 62), Fig. 4, forming the alternator output terminals (14), 16. The stator 41 has 3-phase windings 12, and the shaft 43 carries a fan not shown, and an interdigitated pole rotor 42 whose winding 21 is supplied via slip rings 18, 19 and brushes 52, 53.
