Abstract

A nail making machine of the kind in which an approximate nail length is cut from wire stock by a cutter and is headed while held by a gripper, includes a reciprocating member 58, Fig. 6, for operating the cutter and gripper, the member having slots 72 in it through which a driving shaft 5 passes, the slots permitting reciprocation of the member by means of a connecting rod 70 and crankpin 71. The machine includes a wire straightening section 11, Fig. 1, a feeding section 12 and a cutting and heading section 13. The vertically reciprocating frame member 58 actuates horizontally guided cutting and gripping tools by means of toggle links 53 and 54. The frame 58 includes two side members joined by one or more crossheads 61 and driven by a shaft 71 connected to the crank 67 of shaft 5. The relationship between the frame 58 links 53 and 54 and horizontally slidable tool carries 49 and 51 is indicated in plan in Fig. 12 (not shown). The wire is fed through a guide 97 indicated in plan, Fig. 9, and is cut and pointed by tools 50. Further tools 52 grip the length of wire N while a heading tool 75 heads the wire. The finished nail is ejected by an ejector mechanism attached to the reciprocating frame 58. The heading tool is similarly actuated by the frame 58, a bell crank lever 78, Fig. 1, having pivotal connections at its two ends with the tool and frame. A reciprocating lever 40 drives a tube 38 and two heads 37 to feed the wire. Each head includes a pair of rollers, one pair gripping the wire in the feeding direction and the other gripping it in the reverse direction. Straightening of the wire is performed between a set of horizontal rollers 14 and a vertical set 25, Fig. 2, the rollers in each set being mounted in screw adjusted bearing blocks 16. Levers 24 and 25, provided at their ends with cams 23, are rotated to bring the rollers together against the bias of springs 21.
