Abstract

A flexible coupling comprises a unitary member 4 of straight sided polygonal shape (square as shown) made up from at least four laminations of resilient metal and connected, on diameters at right angles, by axial pins 5 to shaft heads 1, 2. The link 4 may increase in thickness at its extremities, e.g. corners, where it is connected, to the pins 5, by means of lamin[mu] 41 of successively decreasing length (Figs. 6, 9 and 10, not shown). Discs 6 having apertures spigoted on one pair of pins 5 and loosely surrounding the other pair may be provided to take up the drive in the event of failure of the link. Fig. 8 (not shown) illustrates a double coupling in which an intermediate member (9) is connected by its end flanges 2 through two such links 4 to shaft hubs 1. Figs. 11 and 12 (not shown) illustrate the link pin clamping washers (10) having one face (11) dished or corrugated to increase unit bolt load pressure. Axial flexibility of the link 4 may be increased by making the length of the link arms (L1) (Fig. 2, not shown) fractionally greater than the centre to centre distance be tween connecting pins 5 such that the link arms buckle as in Fig. 4 (not shown), an axial force-deflection graph (Fig. 5, not shown) illustrating the effect of this arrangement
