Abstract
Packages of material are passed to an irradiation chamber through a non-linear passage whose cross-sectional area is reduced at a number of places. The reduced parts may be of the same material as the chamber walls, i.e. concrete, or be provided by a number of masks or door (10, Fig. 2, not shown) each having a out-out to allow passage of the packages (13) on the conveyer system (12). The packages are conveyed from the loading station (7, Fig. 1 not shown) to a closed loop conveyer (3) located in the irradiation chamber (1) and which carries them around the radio-active source (2) by means of a ring conveyer, the packages being suspended from a rail (12) mounted at a gradient to the roof of the passage, and moved by a rotating motor-driven chain. A roller or belt conveyer system may be used instead. The doors (10) are hung on hinges (11) and can be opened to allow access to the passage for servicing. They are made of lead or enriched uranium and absorb about 50% of radiation incident on them. The walls, roof and floor of the passage may be fissured to increased radiation absorption efficiency (Figs. 3 and 4, not shown). With a fissured floor and roof, a roller conveyer is used and a mask or door may be in the form of a drawbridge which in its lowered position bridges the fissures in the floor.
