Abstract
Process for the preparation of modified alkyd resins capable of forming a homogeneous copolymer with methyl methacrylate or ethyl acrylate, heating in the presence of a polymerization catalyst, characterized by thermally reacting (a) 2 to 5 parts by weight of an acid or anhydride ethylenically unsaturated organic, (b) 25 to 60 parts by weight of a saturated monobasic acid, or of a non-drying fatty acid oil, having at least 9 carbon atoms in the molecule, (c) 20 to 55 parts by weight of a saturated dicarboxylic acid or anhydride, and (d) sufficient polyhydric alcohol to provide an excess of hydroxyl groups of 10% to 75% on that required to react stoichiometrically with the carboxyl groups of the carboxylic acid reagents, in the presence of 0.005% to 0.5% on the basis of the weight of the reaction mass, of a polymerization inhibitor, until the obtained resin has an acid number of 1 to 2 5.
