Abstract
The invention consists in a sewage treatment biofilm reactor, where drainage of sludge is achieved artificially by direct extraction from the reactor, together with the medium thereof. The system operates all the time in a transitory and controlled biomass growth regime. The sludge, extracted in its own medium, can be left to drain away and evaporate, achieving dehydration first of all and drying later or else it can be digested aerobically or anaerobically. These treatments allow the re-use or direct disposal of the sludge. It is thus possible to eliminate the additional solid-liquid separation process which is normally necessary downstream from biofilm reactors. The system is applicable to different biofilm processes, such as: Rotary Biological Contactors, Bacterial Beds, Fluidized Beds, Expanded Beds, Aerated Biofilters and Aerated Submerged Beds. The solution for a rotary biological contactor and some results of operation are presented as an example.
