Abstract
An electrical connector, which has component parts that can be mounted on the ground, in the term of shielded, high-voltage electric cables, in order to provide a connection between a first and a second of said cables, these having an electrical conductor surrounded by an insulating jacket within a conductive shield, the electrical connector comprising: a pair of housing elements of elastomeric material, each of said elements having an inner part of electrically insulating elastomer and an outer part of elastomer of electrical conductivity, characterized in that said inner and outer portions of each housing element are joined along a generally continuous and void-free joint; said housing elements having corresponding parts at corresponding ends to cooperate with each other in sealed or hermetic relation, said corresponding parts including: an axially extending plug, at one end of the inner part of one of said pair of housing elements, having the plug a bottom and a generally cylindrical surface with an outer diameter different from the total diameter of the outer surface of the remainder of said housing element so that a surface extending generally laterally extends, between the bottom of the plug and the outer surface, and a receptacle, extending axially, at the corresponding end of the inner part of the other housing element, said receptacle having an open end and a generally cylindrical surface with an inner diameter corresponding to the outer diameter of the plug, said diameter interior smaller than diameter t the outer surface of the remainder of said other housing element, so that a surface, which extends generally laterally, extends between the end of the receptacle and said outer surface of said other housing element; the connection or junction between the inner and outer parts of each of the respective housing elements follows a continuous contour extending essentially to the surface, generally cylindrical, of the plug and the receptacle, respectively, so that the the pattern of electrical voltages across the corresponding facing ends of the joined housing elements is generally continuous and the voltage gradient along the corresponding laterally extending surfaces of the housing elements is reduce to a minimum.
