Definitions
- the invention relates to a method and an arrangement for detecting a flashback in a burner that is operated with a mixture of fuel gas and air (premix burner).
- Such burners are often made of perforated sheet metal and can be designed as so-called flat or cylinder burners. Round holes are mostly used, but oblong slits and other shapes of the holes are also possible.
- the dimensioning of the holes and their number/area unit and arrangement has an influence on the flame stability during combustion in a combustion chamber and on combustion hygiene (completeness of combustion and production of pollutants).
- the risk of such a backfire is particularly high when the flame speed of the fuel gas/air mixture is higher than the outflow speed at the burner holes/slits. This is especially the case when using pure hydrogen as fuel gas or fuel gas with a high hydrogen content of over 50%.
- a flashback only starts on one or a few holes/slits and spreads from there. It is not possible to predict exactly at which point, because this can depend on flow turbulence, thermal fluctuations and/or other external influences.
- hydrogen When burned, hydrogen differs from commonly used fuel gases in a number of ways, notably a hydrogen flame is almost invisible to the human eye, radiates less heat than flames produced with carbonaceous fuels, and requires different measurement systems than hydrocarbon fuel heaters . Nevertheless, the present invention also relates specifically to burners for hydrogen as fuel gas.
- the object of the present invention is to at least partially alleviate the problems described with reference to the prior art and, in particular, to reliably detect a flashback in a heater operated with a fuel gas-air mixture in order to take appropriate measures to avoid it or even switch it off of the heater.
- a method and an arrangement are to be created for detecting a flashback, the arrangement being simple and suitable for everyday operation of a heating device.
- a method for detecting flashback of a flame in a heating device which has a burner made of perforated sheet metal with holes for a fuel gas-air mixture to exit into a combustion chamber, the burner delimiting an interior space, the flame on and/or burns over an outer surface of the burner and the flashback takes place from the outer surface to an inner surface and into the interior of the burner and at least one thermal and/or optical effect of the flashback is observed by means of at least one sensor in the interior of the burner.
- a thermal effect is preferably observed by means of at least one temperature sensor.
- a flashback there is a short-term Temperature increase at the temperature sensor or at several temperature sensors, which can be evaluated as a transient or threshold value.
- Thermocouples for example, can be used as temperature sensors, in particular those that are designed not only as points but as lines. Thermocouples are robust, low-maintenance and durable.
- an optical effect can be observed by means of at least one optical sensor, which detects at least a partial area of the interior.
- at least one optical sensor which detects at least a partial area of the interior.
- hardly any light falls through the holes in the burner from the combustion chamber into the interior or an upstream mixture path.
- light will propagate into the mixture path.
- this can be in the ultraviolet as well as in the infrared range.
- the ultraviolet component is dominant, so that an optical sensor that is sensitive to this component is used.
- the operating parameters can also be adjusted for the next burner cycle in such a way that flashbacks no longer occur.
- You can, for example, by increasing a fan speed and possibly proportional to a Gas volume in the heater increase the fuel gas-air volume flow. As a result, the flow velocity in the holes in the burner increases and is then above the flame velocity, so that there is no longer any risk of flashback.
- the sensor is preferably at least one optical sensor, which detects at least a partial area of the interior and is sensitive to emissions that occur when the combustible gas/air mixture is burned. It is favorable, for example, if the optical sensor is aligned and designed in such a way that it can detect flames spreading in the interior. A position in the vicinity of an inlet for the combustible gas/air mixture can be used for this purpose in particular.
- the senor is at least one temperature sensor, which is arranged in at least one zone of the interior that is representative of the thermal effects of a flashback. Since the flames migrate inwards from the inner surface of the burner in the event of a flashback, e.g. B. an arrangement along the inner surface (in contact or in the vicinity) makes sense, it being particularly useful for different places where a flashback occurs to provide several such temperature sensors distributed over the inner surface.
- sensors are particularly preferred, including at least one optical sensor and at least one temperature sensor.
- sensors of the same type can also be interconnected in order to limit the number of feed lines and still monitor the interior as comprehensively as possible.
- all sensors are connected to an evaluation unit which is set up to detect flashbacks of flames from the measured values transmitted by the sensors and to pass this on to a control and regulation unit.
- a further aspect also relates to a computer program product comprising instructions which cause the arrangement described to carry out the method described.
- the evaluation of the data measured by the sensor and their further use in the heater require a program and data for controlling the heater, both of which must be updated from time to time.
- the explanations for the method can be used for a more detailed characterization of the arrangement, and vice versa.
- the arrangement can also be set up in such a way that the method is carried out with it.
- a heater 1 which can be operated with a fuel gas, in particular hydrogen or a hydrogen-containing fuel gas.
- Air is guided from a fan 3 to a combustion chamber 4 via an air intake 2 .
- a fuel gas is added to the air via a fuel gas supply 5 and a fuel gas valve 6 in a mixing element 7 .
- This combustible gas-air mixture flows through a burner 10 and through holes 18 therein into the combustion chamber 4 where it is burned to form flames 19 .
- the flames are usually ignited by an ignition electrode 24 that is controlled via an ignition line 25 .
- a combustor 10 In normal operation, the mixture flows out of the holes 18 so quickly that flames 19 burn stably on or over an outer surface 16 of the burner 10 and not through the holes 18 to an inner surface 17 of the burner 10 and thus into an interior space 15 of the burner 10 can reach.
- the holes 18 are shaped, dimensioned and selected in terms of number and distribution in such a way that stable flames can develop under all operating conditions. However, this is more difficult with hydrogen than with other fuel gases, since the hydrogen-air mixture has a very high flame speed and a lot of energy per unit volume is released when it is burned.
- a combustor 10 has a cylindrical shape with an inlet end face 22 and an outlet end face 23, with the holes located only in a cylindrical shell.
- Burners there are also other types of Burners, for which the concept proposed here can also be applied analogously.
- Exhaust gases produced during combustion are discharged via an exhaust system 26 .
- a control and regulation unit 8 controls and regulates the entire operation of the heater 1, in particular through data via control lines 14 to the blower 3 and the fuel gas valve 6.
- An ignition process using the ignition electrode 24 when the heater 1 is started is also controlled by the control and Control unit 8 controlled.
- At least one optical sensor 12 and/or at least one temperature sensor 11, which are arranged in the interior 15, are used for this purpose.
- Both types of sensors are preferably used at the same time, if necessary several of one type are spatially distributed in order to be able to detect flashbacks as reliably as possible anywhere in the burner.
- the sensors 11, 12 are connected via measuring lines 13 to an evaluation unit 9, which evaluates the measured values of the sensors 11, 12 and, in the case of courses that are characteristic of kickbacks, recognizes these and forwards them to the control and regulation unit 8.
- This can then initiate suitable measures, in particular issue a warning message and/or a warning signal, switch off the heater and possibly restart it with changed operating parameters and/or also change parameters during operation.
- the parameters are changed in such a way that the outlet speed of the fuel-air mixture from the holes 18 increases and thus the probability of a setback decreases.
- an optical sensor 12 should be able to capture as large a partial area 20 of the interior space 15 as possible (ie detect light from this partial area 20).
- the sensor 12 can preferably be arranged on one of the end faces 22, 23 and aligned with the interior space 15.
- An arrangement on the inlet-side end face 22 can make sense, since its measuring line 13 should preferably not run through the combustion chamber 4, but rather through the inlet-side end face 22.
- a temperature sensor 11 should be arranged in a representative zone 21 (i.e. a zone that is is influenced as equally as possible in different places).
- the present invention allows flashbacks of flames 19 to be reliably detected with simple and robust instrumentation in the interior 15 of a burner 10 and countermeasures to be initiated in good time.

Description
The invention relates to a method and an arrangement for detecting a flashback in a burner that is operated with a mixture of fuel gas and air (premix burner).
Such burners are often made of perforated sheet metal and can be designed as so-called flat or cylinder burners. Round holes are mostly used, but oblong slits and other shapes of the holes are also possible. The dimensioning of the holes and their number/area unit and arrangement has an influence on the flame stability during combustion in a combustion chamber and on combustion hygiene (completeness of combustion and production of pollutants). Depending on the properties of the fuel gas used, it can happen with a given burner that the flame does not burn on or just above a burner surface, but instead migrates into the perforated plate and the fuel gas-air mixture is already unintentionally ignited on the inside of the perforated plate. If this occurs frequently, this can lead to thermal overloading of components in the burner and/or in an upstream mixture path. The risk of such a backfire is particularly high when the flame speed of the fuel gas/air mixture is higher than the outflow speed at the burner holes/slits. This is especially the case when using pure hydrogen as fuel gas or fuel gas with a high hydrogen content of over 50%. As a rule, a flashback only starts on one or a few holes/slits and spreads from there. It is not possible to predict exactly at which point, because this can depend on flow turbulence, thermal fluctuations and/or other external influences.
When burned, hydrogen differs from commonly used fuel gases in a number of ways, notably a hydrogen flame is almost invisible to the human eye, radiates less heat than flames produced with carbonaceous fuels, and requires different measurement systems than hydrocarbon fuel heaters . Nevertheless, the present invention also relates specifically to burners for hydrogen as fuel gas.
So far, there has been no systematic detection of flashbacks in heaters, but rather an effort to reduce the probability of flashbacks through appropriate selection of operating parameters (which keep the outflow speed greater than the flame speed) and appropriate dimensioning of the holes. Although flashbacks make z. B. noticeable by pressure surges and noise, but a reliable distinction from other effects is difficult.
The object of the present invention is to at least partially alleviate the problems described with reference to the prior art and, in particular, to reliably detect a flashback in a heater operated with a fuel gas-air mixture in order to take appropriate measures to avoid it or even switch it off of the heater. In particular, a method and an arrangement are to be created for detecting a flashback, the arrangement being simple and suitable for everyday operation of a heating device.
Die Beschreibung, insbesondere im Zusammenhang mit der Zeichnung, veranschaulicht die Erfindung und gibt weitere Ausführungsbeispiele an.A method and an arrangement as well as a computer program product according to the independent claims serve to solve this task. Advantageous refinements and developments of the invention are specified in the respective dependent claims. The description, in particular in connection with the drawing, illustrates the invention and specifies further exemplary embodiments.
Contributing to this is a method for detecting flashback of a flame (flame flashback) in a heating device which has a burner made of perforated sheet metal with holes for a fuel gas-air mixture to exit into a combustion chamber, the burner delimiting an interior space, the flame on and/or burns over an outer surface of the burner and the flashback takes place from the outer surface to an inner surface and into the interior of the burner and at least one thermal and/or optical effect of the flashback is observed by means of at least one sensor in the interior of the burner.
When a burner is in operation, it is almost dark inside because hardly any light from the flames outside the burner falls through the holes into the interior. It is also relatively cold inside compared to the combustion chamber outside of the burner because air and fuel gas are typically supplied at around ambient temperature. In the event of a flashback into the interior, there is an at least brief increase in temperature and light emission in the interior, both of which can be measured with sensors and, based on their characteristic appearance and/or course, can be interpreted as signs of a flashback.
A thermal effect is preferably observed by means of at least one temperature sensor. In the event of a flashback, there is a short-term Temperature increase at the temperature sensor or at several temperature sensors, which can be evaluated as a transient or threshold value. Thermocouples, for example, can be used as temperature sensors, in particular those that are designed not only as points but as lines. Thermocouples are robust, low-maintenance and durable.
Alternatively or additionally, an optical effect can be observed by means of at least one optical sensor, which detects at least a partial area of the interior. As a rule, hardly any light falls through the holes in the burner from the combustion chamber into the interior or an upstream mixture path. In the event of flashback, light will propagate into the mixture path. Depending on the fuel gas used, this can be in the ultraviolet as well as in the infrared range. During the combustion of hydrogen, the ultraviolet component is dominant, so that an optical sensor that is sensitive to this component is used.
In particular, after a flashback has been detected, (i) parameters are changed during operation of the heater or (ii) the heater is switched off and possibly restarted with changed parameters, with (in each case) at least one parameter being changed in such a way that the probability of a flashback of the flame is reduced . If a flashback is detected by one of the methods described so far, countermeasures can be initiated. In the simplest case, the burner is not restarted and, for example, a maintenance or warning message is output on a display unit (or, for example, via data transmission to a control center).
Alternatively or additionally, the operating parameters can also be adjusted for the next burner cycle in such a way that flashbacks no longer occur. You can, for example, by increasing a fan speed and possibly proportional to a Gas volume in the heater increase the fuel gas-air volume flow. As a result, the flow velocity in the holes in the burner increases and is then above the flame velocity, so that there is no longer any risk of flashback.
It can also z. B. suffice to lean the fuel-air mixture by either increasing the amount of air at a constant fuel gas volume flow (by increasing the fan speed) or reducing the amount of gas by adjusting a gas valve at a constant fan speed. These measures also increase the flow speed and reduce the flame speed.
An arrangement in a heater for detecting a flashback of a flame that burns on or above an outer surface of a burner made of a perforated sheet metal with holes for the outlet of a fuel gas-air mixture in a combustion chamber, towards an inner surface of the Burner, at least one optical sensor and/or at least one temperature sensor, which is connected to an evaluation unit, being present in an interior space of the burner delimited by the perforated metal sheet.
The sensor is preferably at least one optical sensor, which detects at least a partial area of the interior and is sensitive to emissions that occur when the combustible gas/air mixture is burned. It is favorable, for example, if the optical sensor is aligned and designed in such a way that it can detect flames spreading in the interior. A position in the vicinity of an inlet for the combustible gas/air mixture can be used for this purpose in particular.
In another embodiment, the sensor is at least one temperature sensor, which is arranged in at least one zone of the interior that is representative of the thermal effects of a flashback.
Multiple sensors are particularly preferred, including at least one optical sensor and at least one temperature sensor. Several sensors of the same type can also be interconnected in order to limit the number of feed lines and still monitor the interior as comprehensively as possible.
In particular, all sensors are connected to an evaluation unit which is set up to detect flashbacks of flames from the measured values transmitted by the sensors and to pass this on to a control and regulation unit.
A further aspect also relates to a computer program product comprising instructions which cause the arrangement described to carry out the method described. The evaluation of the data measured by the sensor and their further use in the heater require a program and data for controlling the heater, both of which must be updated from time to time.
The explanations for the method can be used for a more detailed characterization of the arrangement, and vice versa. The arrangement can also be set up in such a way that the method is carried out with it.

When the heater 1 is started or operated, it cannot always be ruled out that
The present invention allows flashbacks of
