Description

“Station for loading and unloading semi-trailers of articulated lorries on/from the railway”
The present invention relates to a station for loading and unloading semi-trailers of articulated lorries on/from the railway.
Over the last few years, the transport of goods by land has undergone an exponential growth, above all by road, by means of a very large number of motor vehicles (lorries), mostly articulated lorries, along all the directions, in particular in Europe.
This leads to major issues of an economic, environmental (pollution) and safety nature.
It is therefore apparent that there is a growing need to transfer most of the goods transported by road to waterways, where practicable, or to the railway, as this is very advantageous both in economic and environmental terms, and capable of relying on a dense network of operating connections. The collection and the widespread distribution of short-haul goods will be reserved for road transport, as no other feasible solution is hypothesized to date.
To this end, some initiatives have been implemented; for example, the RO.LA. (“Rollende Landstrasse”) system, which however has the drawback of having to unnecessarily transport on the train also the tractor and the lorry driver, with obvious economic costs.
Other systems, called TCNA (Unattended Combined Transport), which provide for the loading/unloading and transfer of the semi-trailer between equipped terminals, have such costs, times and functions that they do not definitively solve the issue; proof of this is the low diffusion of the system, with negligible percentages of use.
An example of a TCNA system is described in EP-1292476 in which a station for loading and unloading semi-trailers of articulated lorries on/from train wagons is shown. Said wagons are already resting on the rails of a railway line, i.e., they are ready to be moved along the railway line. Said station comprises a platform rotatable between a loading position, diagonal with respect to the direction of the rails, and an unloading position, parallel to the rails.
Disadvantageously, a complex mechanism is required to couple the platform to the wagon.
Furthermore, due to the loading position being diagonal, the station occupies a lot of the space alongside the railway line.
DE- 102009012159 shows a station for loading and unloading in which the semi-trailer is loaded on a platform capable of being translated along rails orthogonal to the tracks of the railway on which a wagon is stationary.
Said platform is suitable to be coupled with said wagon.
Disadvantageously, a structurally very complicated platform is required which shall be coupled to the wagon.
Furthermore, a loading and an unloading step at a time is possible, limiting the efficiency of the system.
It is the object of the present invention to provide a station for loading and unloading semi-trailers of articulated lorries on/ffom railway which allows a continuous loading and unloading cycle.
It is a further object of the present invention that said station allows using common train wagons suitable to travel on the current railway lines.
It is another further object of the present invention that said station occupies a little space in relation to the loading and unloading speed, i.e. to the number of articulated lorries which may be serviced in a short time.
In accordance with the invention, the above and further objects are achieved by a station as defined in claim 1.
Advantageously, it is possible to transfer a semi-trailer on a wagon while aligning a different wagon with the loading railway line, and aligning another different wagon with the unloading railway line.
The station further allows the opposite operation, i.e. the transfer of a semi-trailer from a train to the road. Advantageously, the station allows the transfer on railway of semi trailers alone, without a tractor.
The station may be easily incorporated into the main existing railway goods terminals, without requiring specific connection and parking infrastructures, given the non-significant time required for loading/unloading.
These and other features of the present invention will become more apparent from the following detailed description of a practical embodiment thereof, shown for non-limiting purposes, in the accompanying drawings, in which:
figure 1 shows a perspective view of a station according to the present invention;
figure 2 shows a top plan view of the station;
figure 3 shows a sectional view according to the line III-III of figure 2; figure 4 shows a sectional view according to the line III-III of figure 2; figure 5 shows a sectional view according to the line V-V of figure 2; figure 6 shows a sectional view according to the line VI-VI of figure 2; figure 7 shows a perspective view of a conveyor;
figure 8 shows a perspective view of a mechanism for moving the conveyor.
A station 1 for loading and unloading semi-trailers 2 of a plurality of articulated lorries 3 on/ffom wagons 4, which is able to form a train 5, comprises a closed-loop conveyor 6, an entry ramp 7 for a plurality of articulated lorries 3 placed side-by-side, and an exit ramp 8 for the tractors 9 of said articulated lorries 3.
Said station 1 comprises a loading railway line 10 and an unloading railway line 16.
The loading railway line 10 is able to form a train 5 formed by wagons 4, each of which is loaded with a semi-trailer 2.
The unloading railway line 16 is able to accommodate trains 5 formed by wagons 4 which are unloaded or loaded of semi-trailers 2, which shall be unloaded. In any case, it provides wagons 4 to the transfer area 23.
Each railway line 10, 16 comprises tracks 11 on which the wagons 4 are able to pass.
The conveyor 6 comprises a belt 12 which rotates in a closed- loop by rotors 18 placed at the ends of the conveyor 6.
At least one motor 17 is able to control the rotation of said rotors 18 rotatably supported by a frame 19.
The rotors 18 and the motor 17 are part of a moving mechanism shown in figure 8 comprising further dragging means 24 capable of dragging the belt 12. Said dragging means 24 are chains or cables, for example.
The belt 12 is provided with cavities 13 which develop orthogonally to the motion direction of the belt 12.
A pair of translating tracks 20 is fixed in each of said cavities 13. Each wagon 4 comprises a platform 14 supported by wheels 15 which is able to be coupled to the translating tracks 20.
The conveyor 6 is substantially embedded in the ground, remaining uncovered only at the top so as to move said wagons 4 from the unloading railway line 16 to the loading railway line 10.
In the embodiment shown in the Figures, the uncovered part of the conveyor 6, in particular of the belt 12, comprises five cavities 13 and respective five pairs of translating tracks 20 (Figure 6).
Consequently, the belt 12 is able to simultaneously support five wagons 4.
The tracks 11 of the railway lines 10, 16 are interrupted by the conveyor 6 in respective loading 21 and unloading 22 areas, so that the breaking space is covered by the translating tracks 20 as will be more apparent below.
The return path of the belt 12 is completely covered.
The loading and unloading steps may be easily understood by observing Figures 1-5.
A train 5 with a plurality of wagons 4 is stationary on the unloading railway line 16 with a wagon 4 positioned on translating tracks 20 of the conveyor 6 in the unloading area 22. The conveyor 6 is stationary.
The arrival of an articulated lorry 3 with a semi-trailer 2 to be loaded on the train 4 starts (possibly, automatically by means of a photocell) the motion of the belt 12, which orthogonally moves the translating tracks 20 (with the wagon 4) towards an area for the transfer 23 of the semi-trailer 2.
The transfer area 23 is between the ramps 7, 8 and is able to simultaneously serve three articulated lorries 3, i.e. there are provided three wagons 4 on the belt 12, which are able to be loaded or unloaded.
The wagon 4 coming from the unloading area 22 stops at the transfer area 23, so as to allow the articulated lorry 3 to move from the entry ramp 7 to the exit ramp 8.
The articulated lorry 3 stops so that the semi-trailer 2 is completely above the platform 14 of the wagon 4 stably associated with the belt 12.
The tractor 9 detaches from the semi-trailer 2 and leaves the transfer area 23 descending along the exit ramp 8.
The semi-trailer 2 is blocked on the wagon 4 which, therefore, resumes the translational motion thereof by means of the belt 12 towards the loading area 21.
Once the loading area 21 is reached, the conveyor 6 is blocked so that the translating tracks 20 align with the tracks 11 of the loading railway line 10: a substantial continuity is established between the translating tracks 20 and the tracks 11.
The wagon 4 loaded with a semi-trailer 2 may be attached to another wagon 4 on the loading railway line 10, forming a train 5 with wagons 4 loaded with semi-trailers 2.
By repeating the operation, it is possible to form a train 5 of wagons 4 loaded with semi-trailers 2 on the loading railway line 10. Advantageously, it is possible to transfer a semi-trailer 2 on a wagon 4 while aligning a different wagon 4 with the loading railway line 10, and aligning another different wagon 4 with the unloading railway line 16.
The station 1 further allows the opposite operation, i.e. the transfer of semi-trailers 2 from a train to the road: semi-trailers 2 stationary in the transfer area 23 may in fact be hooked to the tractors 9.
The station 1 may include a plurality of conveyors 6 in series, capable of serving the same two railway lines 10, 16.
Alternatively, a same conveyor 6 may serve more than two railway lines 10, 16 parallel to one another, with a plurality of transfer areas 23.
Advantageously, the station 1 allows the transfer by railway of semi trailers alone (without tractor) from/to terminals set up at major and crucial centers of the areas concerned, such as for example Europe, establishing real HUBs capable of sorting the semi-trailers.
The result is a huge improvement in environmental terms and, by taking a large number of articulated lorries off the motorways, safety and traffic absorption shall benefit therefrom. Part of the goods traffic may travel 365 days a year, no longer being subjected to holiday limitations.
The station 1 may be easily incorporated into the main existing railway goods terminals, without requiring specific connection and parking infrastructures, given the non-significant time required for loading/unloading.
