Description

The present invention relates to a silencer which can be provided in a vehicle, for example as a rear silencer in an exhaust system of an internal combustion engine.

In order to reduce the sound level as much as possible, it is known to use sound damping units, also known as "bombs", which comprise an inner pipe carrying exhaust gas, an outer pipe surrounding this and soundproofing material arranged in a space between the inner pipe and the outer pipe.

A silencer according to the preamble of claim 1 is from EP 0 475 398 A1 known. In this muffler, a muffling unit is constructed with an inner pipe that is received in an opening of an inner floor and an opening of an outer floor. In its length area extending between the inner floor and the outer floor, the inner tube is surrounded by an outer tube, which is carried in its two end areas on the inner tube. Sound damping material is provided in a volume formed between the inner tube and the outer tube.

The object of the present invention is to provide a silencer, in particular a rear silencer, for an exhaust system of an internal combustion engine, in which a simplified assembly of the various components or assemblies thereof is made possible.

According to the invention, this object is achieved by a muffler, in particular a rear muffler, for an exhaust system of an internal combustion engine according to claim 1. This muffler comprises a muffler housing with a housing jacket elongated in the direction of a housing longitudinal axis and an outer base connected to the housing jacket at both axial end regions of the housing jacket, wherein the housing jacket with the Outer floors delimiting a silencer interior and in the silencer interior at least one inner floor dividing the silencer interior is arranged, further comprising a silencing unit with an exhaust-conducting inner pipe, an outer pipe surrounding the inner pipe and sound insulation material arranged between the inner pipe and the outer pipe, the inner pipe in an opening of an inner floor and an opening of one of the outer floors or a further inner floor is received and the outer tube is firmly connected to the inner floor and one of the outer floors or further inner floor. The outer tube has a radial distance from the inner tube in each of its axial end regions.

Since this silencer constructed according to the invention connects the silencer unit via the outer tube to an inner floor and one of the outer floors or two inner floors penetrated by the inner tube, it is not necessary to implement a direct connection of the outer tube to the inner tube. This simplifies the construction because the soundproofing unit with the inner ear, the outer pipe and the soundproofing material can be produced in a simple manner, for example by filling the gap formed therebetween with the soundproofing material after the inner pipe has been positioned in the outer pipe. Further measures for establishing a fixed connection between the outer tube and the inner tube are not required.

A firm integration of the soundproofing unit is ensured by the fact that the outer tube is connected to the inner floor and one of the outer floors or further inner floors by welding.

In order to be able to easily ensure the defined positioning of the outer tube with respect to the inner bottom on the one hand or one of the outer bottoms or further inner bottom on the other hand, an axial shape receiving the outer tube is formed in the inner bottom and one of the outer floors or further inner bottom. For a simple reception of the sound-damping unit, it is preferably provided that the axial formation formed in the inner floor and that in one of the outer floors or further inner bottom formed axial formation are oriented axially away from each other.

It can advantageously be provided that the opening provided in the inner base is provided in the area of the axial formation formed in the inner base, and / or that the opening provided in one of the outer bases or further inner bases is provided in the area of the axial formation formed in the outer base or further inner base is provided.

In order to ensure a fixed and defined positioning of the inner tube in a simple manner, the opening formed in the inner bottom can be provided on the inner bottom, surrounding a neck which is axially oriented away from the axial formation provided in the inner bottom, and surrounds the inner tube, and / or can on One of the outer floors or further inner floors surrounding the opening formed in the outer floor or further inner floor can be provided with a neck which surrounds the inner tube and is oriented axially away in the direction of the axial formation provided in the outer floor or further inner floor. Since the neck is oriented axially away in the direction of a respective formation, that is, it is not positioned so as to engage in the interior space provided by the formation, in which interior the outer tube and also the sound insulation material can be positioned to engage, mutual interference of such a neck can, in particular, also occur the sound insulation material can be avoided.

A firm connection of the inner tube can be achieved in that the inner tube is firmly connected to the neck provided on the inner floor, preferably by welding, and / or that the inner tube is firmly connected to the neck provided on one of the outer floors or further inner floors, preferably by welding is. Furthermore, it can be provided for a simple structure that the neck provided on the inner bottom and the one on the one the necks provided for the outer bottoms or further inner bottoms are oriented axially away from one another.

For a simple structure, it is proposed that the outer tube is cylindrical.

In order to be able to use the soundproofing characteristics of the soundproofing material efficiently, a plurality of openings penetrating a pipe wall of the inner pipe can be provided in the length region of the inner pipe surrounded by the soundproofing material.

Furthermore, for an efficient reduction of the sound level, it is proposed that the sound insulation material essentially completely fills an intermediate space formed between the outer pipe and the inner pipe.

For example, the sound insulation material can comprise fiber material and / or foamed material.

The inner floor and / or one of the outer floors or further inner floors can be provided in a simple manner as a shaped sheet metal part with the structure to be provided according to the invention.

The invention also relates to an exhaust system comprising a silencer constructed according to the invention.

The present invention will be explained hereinafter with reference to the accompanying Fig. 1 described in detail, which shows a length range of a muffler for an exhaust system of an internal combustion engine in a simplified longitudinal section.

In Fig. 1 shows an end region of a muffler, generally designated 10, for an exhaust system of an internal combustion engine in a vehicle. For example, such a muffler 10 can be provided as a rear muffler in the end area of the exhaust system.

The muffler 10 comprises a muffler housing 12 with, for example, a substantially cylindrical housing jacket 14 that is elongated in the direction of a housing longitudinal axis A. At both axial end regions of the housing jacket 14, the latter is firmly connected to an outer base 16, for example by flanging and / or welding, so that the Housing jacket 14 delimits a housing interior 18 with the two outer bottoms 16.

In the example shown, an inner floor 20 is provided in the housing interior 18 at an axial distance from the outer floor 16. The inner bottom 20 divides the Housing interior 18 into several spatial areas, so that in the illustrated embodiment, a chamber 22 is formed between the illustrated outer base 16 and the inner base 20. For reasons of soundproofing, for example, the inner bottom 20 can have a perforation so that the chamber 20 is open to the remaining area of the housing interior 18 and can thus form a resonator chamber.

A sound attenuation unit, generally designated by the reference number 24, comprises an exhaust-gas-carrying inner pipe 26 and an essentially cylindrical outer pipe 28 surrounding the inner pipe 26. An intermediate space 30 formed between the inner pipe 26 and the outer pipe 28 is essentially completely filled with sound-absorbing material 32.

The sound attenuation unit 24 can be provided for the sound absorber 10 as a preassembled assembly. For this purpose, the inner pipe 26 can be positioned in the outer pipe 28 and the intermediate space 30 formed between them can then be filled with the sound insulation material 32. The sound insulation material 32 can for example be foamed material which is injected into the space 30 after the defined positioning of the inner pipe 26 with respect to the outer pipe 28. The soundproofing material 32 can alternatively also comprise fiber material, which is plugged into the space 30 or, for example, in the form of a fiber mat, can be wrapped around the inner tube 26 before the inner tube 26 is inserted into the outer tube 28 and then, together with the inner tube 26, into the outer tube 28 can be introduced.

It can be seen that, due to its cylindrical shape, the outer tube 28 is at a radial distance from the inner tube 26 in its two axial end regions 34, 36, as well as in the intermediate length regions, and in particular is not directly connected to this in any length region. The cohesion of this sound-damping unit 24 is ensured by the sound-damping material 32 arranged between the inner pipe 26 and the outer pipe 28. To use the sound-absorbing characteristic of the sound-absorbing material 32 efficiently To be able to, a perforation with a plurality of openings 35 penetrating a pipe wall 33 is provided in the inner pipe 26.

The in Fig. 1 The silencer 10 shown, the silencer assembly 24 is arranged between the outer base 16 shown in this figure and the inner base 20 arranged at an axial distance therefrom and held thereon. For this purpose, the outer base 16 has an axial formation 38 which is dimensioned and adapted to the circumferential contour of the outer tube 28 so that its axial end area 34 can be inserted axially into the axial formation 38 or the spatial area formed therein, for example with a slight interference fit . In an area located, for example, centrally in the axial recess 38, an opening 40 is formed on the outer base 16, which is surrounded by a neck 42 likewise provided on the outer base 16. The inner tube 26 protruding axially beyond the outer tube 28 or the sound-absorbing material 32 engages with its axial end region 44 in the opening 40 or the neck 42. Here, too, the dimensions of the opening 40 or the neck 42 can be selected or matched to the outer circumferential contour of the inner tube 26 in its axial end region 44 such that the inner tube 26 is received with a slight interference fit in the opening 40 or in the neck 42, possibly also protrudes slightly outwards beyond the neck 42. Since the neck 42 is oriented axially away from the formation 38 and does not engage in the formation 38 or the interior space provided by it, there is no interaction between the neck 42 and the sound-absorbing material 32 which is positioned so as to engage in the formation.

An axial recess 46 is also provided in the inner bottom 20. This is oriented away from the axial recess 38 provided in the outer base 16 and accommodates the axial end region 36 of the outer tube 28 or the part of the sound-absorbing material 32 also provided in this axial end region 36 of the outer tube 28. Here, too, the axial formation 46 is preferably adapted in terms of shape and dimensioning to the shape or dimensioning of the outer tube 28 in its axial end region 36, so that the outer tube 28 can be received with its axial end region 36 with a slight interference fit in the axial recess 46.

In the central area of the axial formation 46 of the inner base 20, an opening 48 receiving or penetrating an end region 49 of the inner tube 26 is provided and is surrounded by a neck 50 formed on the inner base 20 and extending approximately axially. The neck 50 is oriented away from the axial formation 46, that is to say the interior space formed therein, so that here, too, there is no mutual interference with the area of the sound-absorbing material 32 engaging in the axial formation 46. In particular, it can be seen that the neck 50 is also oriented away from the outer base 16, so that the neck 42 provided on the outer base 16 and the neck 50 provided on the inner base 20 are oriented away from one another.

The various components or assemblies can be held together firmly by material bonding, that is to say, for example, by welding. Thus, the inner base 20 is preferably fixed on the housing jacket 14 by a weld 52, for example a circumferential weld seam or a plurality of weld points. To ensure a seal against the escape of exhaust gas, the inner tube 26 is fixed in its axial end region 44 by a weld 54, preferably a circumferential weld seam, on the outer base 16, preferably the neck 42 thereof. In a corresponding manner, although this is not absolutely necessary for reasons of the exhaust gas passage, the inner tube 26 can also be fixed in its other axial end region 49 by a weld 56, preferably again a circumferential weld seam, on the inner base 20, preferably the neck 50 thereof. A solid connection between the outer tube 28 and the one in the base 20 in the area of a weld 58, which in turn can preferably be designed as a circumferential weld seam or a plurality of spaced-apart weld points, ensures a firm connection of the sound attenuation assembly 24. Alternatively or additionally, the outer tube 28 can be fixed to the outer base 16 by a weld 60, the weld 60 also being a circumferential weld seam or a May comprise a plurality of spaced apart weld points. If the outer tube 28 is fixed in its two axial end regions 34, 36 on the outer base 16 and on the inner base 20 by welding, which also introduces a comparatively rigid connection between these two bases, it can be advantageous due to the different thermal Expansions of the inner tube 26 on the one hand and of the outer tube 28 on the other hand, the inner tube 26 in its end region 49 is not rigidly connected to the inner base 20.

The fixed connection of the outer tube 28 to the inner base 20 and / or the outer base 16, each adjacent to the axial formation 38 or 46 formed therein, ensures that the sound-damping unit 24 is held securely in the muffler 10. This can be supported by the fixed connection of the inner tube 26 in at least one of its two end regions 44, 49 to the outer base 16 or the inner base 20.

It should be noted that the principles of the present invention can also be used if the sound-damping unit 24 is carried or supported in its two axial end regions or the two axial end regions 34, 36 of the outer tube 28 on two inner floors arranged in the housing interior 18 of the sound absorber 10. is fixed.
