Description

  • The present invention relates to a packaging system suitable for filling box-shaped packaging units. The packaging system according to the invention was developed specifically for processing low packaging units, being packaging units such as for example boxes and crates with a maximum (filling) height of 300 mm.
  • The known packaging systems which are based on the principle in which a bag is placed in a box, the so-called bag-in-box, comprise a bag-placing station (bag inserter) configured to place a bag in a packaging unit, a filling station configured to fill the bag placed in the packaging unit with a product, a heat-sealing station to heat-seal the bag and a conveyor device suitable for moving a packaging unit along the various stations. When placing the bag, a film (which will form the bag) is usually placed in a box with upright flaps (walls of the box which will form the top wall), as is illustrated in Fig. 1. In this case, a certain length of film is turned down over the box flaps when inserting the bag. This length of film is necessary in order to be able to strip off the filled bag later, fold it in and heat-seal it. In this case, the box flaps provide support while the bag is filled with product.
  • With the known devices, the conveyor device is formed by a conveyor belt or roller track which is configured to transport the box past the various stations.
  • If there are no box flaps which can provide support during filling, in particular when products are packaged in crates or boxes with a maximum height of approximately 300 mm, the conveyor device is further provided with two closed conveyor belts which will fix the film on both sides by suction using a vacuum system (see Fig. 2) during transportation of the box. The conveyor belts move the film (bag) at the same speed as the speed with which the cardboard boxes on the conveyor belt or roller track move. The film length which is required in order to make folding in and heat-sealing possible can thus be held stretched while filling the bag with product. However, because box flaps are missing and the film is fully stretched, the drop height is relatively high in this case, which may lead to damage to the products with which the boxes are being filled. The vacuum belt system also has a number of other drawbacks: easily loses the film, consumes a large amount of energy and, in addition, the system quickly becomes soiled.
  • It is an object of the present invention to provide a packaging system for use with low boxes or crates, in which the drop height of the products during filling is reduced in order to greatly reduce the risk of damage to the products.
  • The object of the invention is achieved by providing a packaging system suitable for filling box-shaped packaging units, comprising a bag-placing station configured to place a film for forming a bag in a packaging unit, a filling station configured to fill the bag placed in the packaging unit with a product, a heat-sealing station to heat-seal the bag, and a conveyor device suitable for moving a packaging unit between the various stations, wherein the conveyor device comprises a number of sets of corner elements over which a part of the film is foldable, wherein each set is suitable for moving concomitantly with a packaging unit during transportation past the various stations, and wherein each set of corner elements serves as a support during filling of the bag.
  • As a result of the presence of the corner elements, the placed bag no longer has to be stretched, unlike in the past, as a part of the film is foldable over the corner elements. Consequently, the drop height of the products to be packaged can be reduced. In addition, due to their design, the corner elements (corner profiles) will serve as a support during filling and will thus assume the function of the box flaps. The corner elements are preferably positioned in the vicinity of the corners of the packaging unit (box) and may be viewed as virtual box flaps.
  • In a preferred embodiment of the packaging system according to the invention, the conveyor device comprises two spaced-apart guide rails on which packaging units are displaceable. Of course, the conveyor device may also be designed in the form of a conveyor belt or transport roller. Said guide rails preferably extend in a straight line.
  • The corner elements are in particular placed on a separate displacement system. To this end, the conveyor device of the packaging system according to the invention, in a preferred embodiment, comprises a displacement system for moving the various sets of corner elements. In use, the conveyor device on which the packaging units are moved and the displacement system of the corner elements will move synchronously with each other, so that the corner elements move at the same speed as the packaging units.
  • In a more preferred embodiment of the packaging system according to the invention, the bag-placing station, the filling station and the heat-sealing station are arranged in line with each other.
  • According to a particular embodiment of the packaging system according to the invention, the corner elements of one set are mutually displaceable with respect to each other.
  • In a more particular embodiment of the packaging system according to the invention, the packaging unit is a box or crate with a maximum height of 300 mm, preferably at most 200 mm. The packaging unit is preferably made of cardboard, plastic or metal.
  • A more detailed description of the packaging device according to the invention is given below in order to explain the properties of the present invention in more detail and to indicate additional advantages and features thereof. It will be clear that nothing in the following description may be interpreted as a limitation of the scope of protection of the present invention defined in the claims.
  • In this description, reference numerals are used to refer to the attached drawing, in which:
    • Fig. 1 : shows a known system for use with a box with upright upright box flaps, wherein Fig. 1.1 shows the film (3) for filling and sealing and Fig. 1.2 shows the film after sealing thereof;
    • Fig. 2 : shows the known system which uses a vacuum system for use with a low box (2) or crate without upright box flaps;
    • Fig. 3 : is an outline illustration of the packaging system according to the invention, wherein Fig. 3.1 shows the film which is folded partly over the corner elements before filling and sealing and Fig. 3.2 shows the film after sealing thereof;
    • Fig. 4 : shows a diagrammatic illustration of the conveyor device of the packaging system according to the invention;
    • Fig. 5 : shows a detailed illustration of two corner elements of a set of four corner elements.
  • The packaging system (1) according to the present invention and as can be seen in Fig. 3, is provided with corner elements (5) which assume the supporting function of the box flaps. They secure a film (3) (from which the bag is made) during filling of boxes or other packaging units (2). Because the required length of film (3) is again folded down over the four corner elements (5), the drop height of the product is significantly reduced.
  • As is shown in Fig. 4, the corner elements (5) are provided on a displacement system (4) as a result of which they can synchronously travel along with the crate/film past all 3 stations. In the first station (A), the bag is placed in the crate and the film is pulled (loosely) over the various corner elements (5) to a sufficient degree to provide support during the move to the second station (B) for filling.
  • In the second station (B), the corner elements move slightly outwards in their guides, as a result of which the film is pulled tight over the corner elements (5). In this way, the filling opening becomes larger and the film is clamped securely in an optimum manner during filling. In the third station (C), the corner elements (5) move back towards each other, as a result of which the film becomes somewhat looser again and can consequently readily be stripped off, stretched, folded and heat-sealed. Subsequently, the set of corner elements (5) move back to the first station (A). The crates themselves continue to move on a conveyor belt or roller track.
  • The width of the displacement system (4) on which the corner elements (5) are provided may be set. In this way, the system can be set to a specific crate width. Also, the corner elements may be placed further apart on their guide (according to crate length). The presence of the film is checked on the four corners of the box. To this end, a blow pipe with stop (not shown) is pressed against the corner elements. In the corner elements (5), in particular in the plate-shaped support element (7), a (blow) opening (8) is configured to this end.
    • Situation 1: Film is present between a corner element (5) and its blow pipe.
      Due to the presence of film, the air from the blow pipe can no longer escape via the opening (8) in the corner element (5). A build-up of pressure in the conduit results. By means of a pressure measurement in the conduit, it is ascertained that there is film present in this position.
    • Situation 2: There is no film present between a clamping corner and its blow pipe.
      The air from the blow pipe can escape freely via the opening (8) in the corner element. No build-up of pressure in the conduit results. The pressure measurement shows that no film is present.
  • The packaging system (1) according to the invention has various advantages: a low drop height for the product during filling by folding the film (3) over the various corner elements (5) of a set, the possibility of using thin films (from approximately 15 µm) with crates, an automatic replacement of the film roll is possible by using prefabricated bags on a roll.
