Description
The present invention relates to the synthesis of oxygen reduction electrocatalysts free from noble metals by the laser pyrolysis method. The invention applies to all fields exploiting the properties of electrocatalysis, in particular those relating to systems which are the site of electrochemical phenomena, such as, for example, fuel cells.
The material is in the form of a powder of nanometric size which can be used as obtained or after various treatments, to produce an electrode on which the property of reducing oxygen can be demonstrated.
The synthesis of oxygen reduction electrocatalysts free from noble metals is the subject of very intense research activity throughout the world. The issue linked to this theme is indeed very important since it conditions the significant long-term development of the hydrogen sector and of electrochemical devices for the production of electrical energy such as fuel cells. The latter incorporate electrocatalysts making it possible to increase the efficiency of the recombination of hydrogen and oxygen producing electricity, water and heat. These reactions occur in a basic medium or in an acidic medium depending on the nature of the electrolyte used in the cell. The use of electrocatalysts is necessary at the anode where the oxidation of hydrogen occurs and at the cathode where the reduction of oxygen occurs. It is at the level of this latter reaction, which is particularly slow, that the losses of conversion into electrical energy are highest; the literature is therefore more particularly interested in it. The reference electrocatalysts used in the most efficient devices are essentially based on noble metals and in particular on platinum. In fact, the scarcity of this element and its cost limit the long-term development of fuel cell technology on a large scale.
A recent review [1] on the synthesis and performance of electrocatalysts dedicated to the reduction of oxygen devotes an important part to electrocatalysts without noble metals based on carbon, nitrogen and a metal (iron most often ). In this category, electrocatalysts are listed and classified according to their performance based on battery testing, powered by air or oxygen at the cathode. This review is accompanied by a detailed description of the synthesis conditions making it possible to obtain these catalysts and their characteristics in terms of specific surface. From this analysis it emerges that the first determining factor is the formation of electrocatalytic structures, having of course active sites, but above all a very large specific surface. The five best electrocatalysts thus have specific surfaces of between 758 m2 / g and 1096 m2 / g. All of these electrocatalytic systems involve the use with the precursors of specific elements (polymers, sacrificial silica-based matrices, MOF-type structures). These particular precursors may or may not, depending on their nature, not only constitute elements making it possible to obtain materials with a large specific surface area but also precursors of the nitrogen carbon elements which, together with the metallic precursor, allow the formation of active sites. Finally, it is important to also specify that the most active C / N / Metal type materials listed include specific steps in their production process (mixing step then putting back to dryness, grinding step) which seem to be decisive in relation to the production process. -with respect to the performance obtained. To these stages are added heat treatments, intermediate or final, leading to the formation of the electrocatalyst proper.
Les performances de ces électrocatalyseurs sont en général moins élevées que ceux dont la préparation implique un métal tel que le fer [1].Finally, if the synthesis of electrocatalysts without noble metals comprising a metal has been widely discussed above, there are also many examples of electrocatalysts based on carbon and nitrogen which do not contain any metal [2]. The performance of these electrocatalysts is generally lower than those whose preparation involves a metal such as iron [1].
There is therefore still a need for novel oxygen reduction electrocatalysts which have good performance while being economically viable in industrial uses such as fuel cells.
An aim of the invention is therefore to provide a process for preparing electrocatalysts for the reduction of oxygen which makes it possible to achieve these objectives.
It is to the credit of the inventors to have found that this aim could be achieved with a particular synthesis process using laser pyrolysis.
Laser pyrolysis is a method of synthesizing nanomaterials [3]. The insertion of nitrogen into carbonaceous structures by the laser pyrolysis method is described in the literature, for example from gaseous monomethyl amine precursors, ethylene and nitrous oxide [4]. The laser pyrolysis method is also described in the literature for the formation of iron-based nanoparticles in the form of carbide, oxide or nitride or carbonitrides incorporating larger or smaller amounts of carbon. The applications or properties mentioned for these nanoparticles relate to the fields of catalysis of Fischer-Tropsch synthesis, but also of the production of carbon particles or fibers catalyzed by iron. There are also applications related to gas detection, biomedical imaging and magnetic properties.
revendication 1 ; - b) transformation de la composition liquide de l'étape a) en nanoparticules ayant une teneur en carbone d'au moins 80% atomique en composition de surface et exemptes de métaux nobles par pyrolyse laser ;
- a) providing a liquid composition as defined in
claim 1; - b) transformation of the liquid composition of step a) into nanoparticles having a carbon content of at least 80 atomic% in surface composition and free from noble metals by laser pyrolysis;
- c) optionally heat treatment of the nanoparticles obtained in step b) under an NH 3 , argon or oxygen atmosphere, at a temperature ranging from 600 ° C to 1100 ° C.
La teneur en carbone en composition de surface des nanoparticules selon l'invention est déterminée par spectroscopie de photoélectrons X (XPS).This process makes it possible to prepare nanoparticles with a very predominant carbon content in surface composition, preferably at least 80 atomic%, more preferably at least 90 atomic%. The carbon content in the surface composition of the nanoparticles according to the invention is determined by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS).
For the purposes of the invention, the term “nanoparticles” is understood to mean also called particles of nanometric sizes, particles all of whose dimensions are between 1 and 100 nm, preferably between 1 and 50 nm. When the expression “between a first value and a second value” is used in the present application, it is understood that the limits are included in the indicated range.
The carbon-based solvent (s) of the liquid composition used in the process according to the invention is advantageously chosen from organic solvents and mixtures of one or more organic solvents and water. By way of example of organic solvents which can be used, mention may be made of alcohols, esters of carboxylic acids, dimethylsulfoxide, acetamide, formamide, acetonitrile, aromatic solvents and heteroaromatic solvents. Preferably, the organic solvent (s) is (are) chosen from alcohols, esters of carboxylic acids, dimethylsulfoxide, acetamide, formamide, acetonitrile, toluene and pyridine, more preferably from toluene and pyridine. . The liquid composition may for example comprise toluene or pyridine as the sole organic solvent or a mixture of toluene and pyridine.
The liquid composition comprising one or more organic solvents may comprise one or more additional constituents. These additional constituents can in particular be chosen from salts of non-noble metals, organic compounds, optionally comprising one or more heteroatoms, in particular chosen from N, P, S and O, preferably one or more nitrogen atoms (N), and mixtures thereof, and solid materials insoluble in the organic solvent (s). The expression liquid composition as used in the context of the invention is therefore not limited to compositions consisting only of liquid components but also covers compositions containing one or more insoluble solid components, which are then found in suspension in the solvent; the whole forming a composition which does not lose its liquid character so that it is still possible to generate an aerosol from this composition.
Non-limiting examples of organic compounds containing one or more heteroatoms which can be used include melamine; pyrazole; dicyanamide; acridine; phenantroline; 1,3,5-triazine; 3,5 diamino-1,2,4-triazole; 2,4,6-tri (2-pyridyl) -S-trazine; urea; 4-methylimidazole; thiophene; organic sulphides and disulphides; 4-mercaptopyridine disulfide; thiourea; thiourea derivatives and in particular 1,3-di-p-tolyl-2-thiourea; thiazole derivatives such as thiazole yellow G, thiabendazole, sulfathiazole; thicyanate, isothiocyanates, triphenyl phosphine; organic phosphates and organic phosphonates; 4-methylimidazole being preferred. The presence of one or more heteroatoms makes it possible to contribute to the introduction of heteroatoms into the nanoparticles according to the invention.
The non-noble metal salts can in particular be chosen from the salts of non-noble transition metals and of zinc, preferably from the iron, cobalt, molybdenum, nickel, manganese and zinc salts, preferably from the salts. iron salts and cobalt salts. These salts can be used alone or in mixtures. They may be inorganic or organic salts, preferably organic salts. By way of example of inorganic salts, mention may be made of sulphates, nitrates and phosphates and, for organic salts, acetylacetonates, such as iron acetylacetonate and cobalt acetylacetonate. By "non-noble transition metal" is meant all transition metals except noble metals, that is to say gold (Au), silver (Ag), rhodium (Rh) , osmium (Os), palladium (Pd), ruthenium (Ru), iridium (Ir) and platinum (Pt). As regards the use of sulfates, nitrates and / or phosphates, the inventors believe that these metal counterions could contribute heteroatoms in the nanoparticles according to the invention.
Leurs dimensions sont avantageusement inférieures à 100 nm.When the liquid composition comprises one or more solid materials insoluble in the organic solvent (s), of nanometric dimensions, the latter or these are in suspension in the liquid composition. These materials can in particular be chosen from carbon-based nano-objects such as carbon blacks, carbon nanotubes and graphene, and / or nanoparticles based on a non-noble metal such as iron oxide. Their dimensions are advantageously less than 100 nm.
In one embodiment, the liquid composition consists of one or more solvents as defined above. The transformation of the liquid composition of step a) into nanoparticles having a carbon content of at least 80 atomic% in surface composition and free from noble metals is carried out by laser pyrolysis. This method, the operating principle of which is well known to those skilled in the art, makes it possible to transform the liquid or gaseous composition in a single step into nanoparticles using a laser pyrolysis device (reactor). Such devices are for example described by Haggerty [3]. Developed in the 1980s, laser pyrolysis is based on the interaction in crossed jets between a liquid or gaseous precursor and the emission of a CO 2 laser and therefore requires a resonance between the emission spectrum of the laser and the spectrum of absorption of at least one of the reagents. Energy transfer takes place by exciting the vibrational levels of molecules that absorb laser energy. The transfer of energy causes a rise in temperature in the reaction zone, the precursors are dissociated, a flame appears in which nanoparticles are formed without interaction with the walls of the reactor. The precursors can generally be gaseous or liquid. In the case of a liquid, the precursor can be injected into the reactor after evaporation [6] or in the form of an aerosol of liquid droplets [7].
Also, in the present invention, the liquid composition is first transformed into an aerosol, then this aerosol is entrained with the aid of a carrier gas towards a pyrolysis reactor. The transformation of the liquid composition into an aerosol is carried out using an aerosol generator device. This type of device is well known to those skilled in the art. By way of example of aerosol-generating devices that can be used within the framework of the invention, mention may be made of piezoelectric aerosol-generating devices such as for example that marketed by the company RBI (France) under the name Pyrosol 7901 type . The carrier gas generally consists of a carrier gas and a gas which absorbs laser radiation. With regard to the carrier gas, this is a gas which does not absorb at the emission wavelength of the laser used. There are two types of carrier gases: neutral carrier gases and reactive carrier gases. A neutral carrier gas does not participate in the formation of nanoparticles while a reactive carrier gas does. By way of non-limiting example of neutral carrier gases, mention may be made of argon and helium, argon being preferred. By way of non-limiting example of reactive vector gas, mention may be made of nitrogen. The carrier gas can also consist of a mixture of neutral carrier gas and reactive carrier gas. The second component of the carrier gas is a gas which absorbs laser radiation. For the purposes of the invention, the term “laser radiation-absorbing gas” means a molecule in gaseous form exhibiting absorption at the emission wavelength of the laser used, that is to say around 10.6 μm in the case of a CO 2 laser. Those skilled in the art will readily be able to identify suitable laser radiation absorbing gases. By way of example of an absorbent gas in the case of a CO 2 laser, mention may be made of ethylene, sulfur hexafluoride and ammonia (NH 3). Ethylene and ammonia have the advantage of also acting as nitrogen and carbon precursors respectively. Advantageously, one can for example use a mixture of argon (Ar) and ammonia or a mixture of argon, ammonia and ethylene or a mixture of nitrogen and ammonia as carrier gas.
La source laser est avantageusement un laser CO2.In the pyrolysis reactor, laser radiation is applied to the aerosol, then nanoparticles free of noble metals and having a carbon content of at least 80 atomic% in surface composition are recovered at the outlet of the reactor. Laser radiation can be applied in a focused configuration or in a defocused configuration. The laser source is advantageously a CO 2 laser.
After the transformation of the liquid composition of step a) into a nanoparticle by laser pyrolysis in step b), one can optionally apply to the nanoparticles a heat treatment in an NH 3 , argon or oxygen atmosphere, preferably in an NH 3 atmosphere or argon, at a temperature ranging from 600 ° C to 1100 ° C. Those skilled in the art will easily know how to adapt the duration of the heat treatment, in particular as a function of the treatment temperature and the quantity of nanoparticles to be treated. The heat treatment can for example be carried out outside the reactor in a furnace or inside the pyrolysis reactor. In the latter case, laser pyrolysis can for example be used in a double-stage configuration. Double-stage configurations that can be implemented within the framework of the invention are described in the literature ([8], [9]).
Nanoparticles which may have undergone a heat treatment can be washed in order to remove synthetic by-products. Advantageously, this washing is carried out with an organic solvent in which the synthesis by-products are soluble. By way of example, mention may be made of acetone as well as ethyl and methyl acetates.
A second subject of the invention relates to nanoparticles free of noble metals and having a carbon content of at least 80 atomic% in surface composition which can be obtained by the process described above as such. Such nanoparticles free from noble metals and having a carbon content of at least 80 atomic% in surface composition are in particular characterized in that they have a high specific surface area, in particular from about 100 m 2 / g to about 1400
Les teneurs en carbone, azote et métal en composition de surface des nanoparticules selon l'invention sont déterminées par spectroscopie de photoélectrons X (XPS).The carbon content in the surface composition of the nanoparticles according to the invention is preferably at least 80 atomic%, more preferably at least 90 atomic%. The nitrogen content in the surface composition of the noble metal-free nanoparticles according to the invention is advantageously from 0.5 atomic% to 15 atomic%. The carbon, nitrogen and metal contents of the surface composition of the nanoparticles according to the invention are determined by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS).
The nanoparticles according to the invention find a particular application as electrocatalysts for the reduction of oxygen. The exposure to the laser beam can be done in a pulsed manner, the exposure frequency possibly being a few microseconds, or, advantageously, continuously. It is possible to employ a focuser, such as an optical device, which is placed such that the optical source is focused on the precursor. The focusing can in particular be a cylindrical lens. Advantageously, it may be a ZnSe lens whose resistance to infrared radiation is high. Focusing increases the power density in the exposure area. Generally, it is recommended to have a power density between 350 and 1200 W / cm 2 for an unfocused beam and from 2000 to 7000 W / cm 2 for a beam located in the focal zone of the lens. Thus, it is preferable that the laser pyrolysis uses laser radiation with a power of at least 600 W, the radiation being focused to provide a power density of at least 2000 W / cm 2 .

In the context of the embodiments presented below, the syntheses of nanoparticles were carried out with devices as described above using a Pyrosol type 7901 aerosol generator operating at 800 kHz - 200 W marketed by the company RBI ( France) used to supply the synthesis reactor equipped with a 2200 W CO 2 laser (PRC, USA, Model SL 2200).
The electrochemical performances are evaluated on porous electrodes produced by filtration of catalyst dispersion on porous carbon supports (carbon felt provided with a microporous layer) which can be used in a device of the fuel cell type. Typically a few mg of catalyst are introduced into a liquid medium solvent (for example isopropanol), an ultrasonic treatment makes it possible to obtain a suspension which is then filtered by vacuum suction on a piece of carbon felt deposited on a frit and surmounted by a tank in which the liquid dispersion containing the catalyst. A Teflon mask makes it possible to check the surface on which the catalyst is deposited (approximately 0.785 cm 2 ). Finally, the mass of catalyst deposited is determined by weighing after drying of the porous electrode by the difference between the total mass of porous support + electrocatalyst and the mass of the porous support alone determined before deposition. It is thus possible to determine the catalyst loading of the porous electrode expressed in mg / cm 2 of active layer.
The surface composition of the nanoparticles was determined by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The XPS analyzes were carried out on porous electrodes whose porous support (felt) is covered with a layer of gold, using a Thermo K-Alpha spectrometer using a K-alpha source aluminum at 1486.7 eV. The analysis exploits the spectrum recorded over the binding energy range from 0 eV to 1350 eV, the photoelectrons being detected perpendicular to the sample. When the XPS analysis is done after the electrochemical measurement, chlorine from the ClO 4- ions is detected because the electrochemical measurement is made in perchloric acid. The oxygen content found is therefore corrected using that of chlorine, ie: quantity of oxygen in the material = total quantity - 4 times that of chlorine.
