Claims (13)

  1. A method of extracting a safety screw or broken screw, the said screw (13) comprising a rod (21) and possibly a head (23), the method comprising the following steps:
    a) drilling a bore (17) in the screw (13) in the longitudinal direction thereof by means of a drill (19) of a diameter smaller than the diameter of the rod (21) of the screw (13);
    b) fitting an extractor (1) in the said bore (17), the extractor (1) comprising a serrated rod (3) whose teeth are in the form of longitudinal ribs (5) and a head (7) fixed at one end of the said rod (3), with the fitting being obtained by inserting the rod (3) of the extractor (1) in the said bore (17) and by hitting on the head (7) of the said extractor (1) by means of a percussion tool (49) so as to rotationally connect the extractor (1) and the screw (13);
    c) extraction of the screw (13) by loosening it by means of a wrench of an appropriate size as regards the head (7) of the extractor;
    the process being characterised in that the step (b) of fitting comprises the use of a striking pin (51) positioned between the extractor (1) and the percussion tool (49) and an end of which has a mark (53) in a shape that interlocks with the one of the head (7) of the extractor (1).
  2. A method according to claim 1 characterised in that step (a) of drilling the bore (17) comprises:
    - the use of a drill (19) comprising a tungsten carbide tip, and/or
    - is preceded by a step of setting up a centring device (25, 29, 39) on the screw (13) for positioning and guiding the drill (19).
  3. A method according to one of claims 1 or 2 characterised in that the extractor (1) comprises a sleeve (9) arranged at the base of its head (7) and having a larger diameter greater than that of its rod (3) and smaller than that of its head (7) so as to form a shoulder (11) with the rod (3) and in that the step (b) of fitting comprises the fitting of the rod (3) of the extractor (1) in the screw (13) until the said shoulder (11) abuts against the screw (13).
  4. A method according to one of claims 1 to 3 characterised in that the step (c) of extraction of the screw (13) is followed by a step (d) of unhooking the extractor (1) from the screw (13) in which it was fitted by using an extraction mandrel (55).
  5. A set of tools for the implementation of the method according to one of claims 1 to 4, comprising:
    - at least an extractor (1) comprising a serrated rod (3) of which the teeth (5) are in the form of longitudinal ribs (5), and a head (7) fixed at one of the ends of the said rod (3);
    - at least a drill (19) of a diameter similar to the diameter of the rod (3) of the extractor (1), for drilling a bore (17) in the screw (13);
    - at least a percussion tool (49) set up to hit the head (7) of the said extractor (1);
    - at least a wrench configured to fit the head (7) of the extractor (1);
    characterised in that the set of tools further comprises:
    - a striking pin (51) for the fitting of the extractor (1) in a bore (17) that has been drilled in the screw (13), the said striking pin (51) having a mark (53) at one of its ends in a shape that interlocks with the head (7) of the extractor (1);
    - one or many centring devices (25, 29, 39) for the positioning and guiding of the drill (19) during the drilling operations.
  6. A set of tools according to claim 5 characterised in that the extractor (1) further comprises a sleeve (9) at the bottom of the head (7), the sleeve having a diameter that is larger than that of the rod (3) and smaller than that of the head (7) so as to form a shoulder (11) with the rod (3); and/or in that the head (7) of the extractor is hexagonal.
  7. A set according to claim 5 or 6 comprising at least one drill (19) of a diameter similar to the diameter of the rod (3) of the extractor (1), for drilling a bore (17) in the screw (13), the set being characterised in that at least one of the drills (19) has a tungsten carbide tip.
  8. A set of tools according to one of claims 5 to 7 comprising at least one centring device (25) for the positioning and guiding of a drill, the set being characterised in that at least one of the centring devices (25) is in the form of a truncated cone traversed on both sides, in its longitudinal direction, by a central conduit (27), the said conduit (27) having a larger diameter than that of the drill (19).
  9. A set of tools according to one of claims 5 to 8 comprising at least one centring device (29) for the positioning and guiding of the drill, the set being characterised in that at least one of the centring devices (29) is in the form of a hollow casing with a cylindrical or frustoconical body traversed by a central conduit (35) of a larger diameter than that of the drill (19); the said central conduit (35) being in contact with an internal cavity (33) opening onto one of the ends of the body (31), the mouth of the internal cavity being dimensioned to cover the screw head; the centring device (29) preferably having a protrusion (37) at its end opposite to that overlooking the internal cavity (33), which has the shape of the head (7) of the extractor (1), the said protrusion (37) being traversed by the said conduit (35).
  10. A set of tools according to one of claims 5 to 9 comprising at least one centring device (39) for the positioning and guiding of a drill, the set being characterised in that at least one of the centring devices (39) is in the form of a cylindrical body (41), and having a mark (43) on at least one of its ends in a shape that interlocks with a head of a hexagonal screw and traversed along its length by a central conduit (45), the said conduit (45) having a larger diameter than that of the drill (19), and the cylindrical body preferably having two diametrically opposite flat sides.
  11. A set of tools according to one of claims 7 to 10 characterised in that at least one of the centring devices (25, 29, 39) is made of plastic, preferably polyoxymethylene (POM).
  12. A set of tools according to one of claims 5 to 11 comprising an extraction mandrel (55) for releasing the extractor (1) from the screw (13) in which it is fitted, the set being characterised in that the said extraction mandrel (55) has a fork (57) at one of its ends, which comprises two teeth (59) of increasing thickness between their tip (61) and their base (63) and preferably parallel to one another, and in that the spacing between the teeth (59) of the extraction mandrel (55) is smaller than the diameter of the head (7) of the extractor (1).
  13. Use of a set of tools according to one of claims 5 to 12 for the extraction of a safety screw or a broken screw on a wheel of a vehicle.
