  • the present invention pertains to a refrigerator having an inner volume where food items are preserved.
  • a structurally essential component involved in a refrigerator is a storage division where food items are preserved at a temperature much higher than that of a freezer compartment but cooler than the regular temperature of the main storage division of said refrigerator. It is known to use ultraviolet light sources to inactivate microorganisms such as bacteria, which grow in food items. This typically helps increasing maximum storage time of food items by suppressing bacterial growth. It is to be noted that even if the food item may still be edible, the presence of bacteria can lead to potential health problems. Use of UV light sources in a refrigerator is effective in retarding food spoilage. In other words, diminishing the amount of organisms in the food item during the pre-spoilage stage should be accomplished.

Due to this arrangement, it is provided that a user activating said UV light source (6) will certainly need to close the door (3) of the refrigerator (1) for deactivating said UV light source (6).
  • said UV light source (6) is not activatable on the main control panel (10) ensures that the given user, after activating said UV light source (6), still has access to the inner volume of the refrigerator (1) with the exception of said chamber (5) before closing the door (3), as closing of the latter will first initiate actuation of said first locking means (4) and then energization of said UV light source (6), as explained below.

  • Visual and audible warnings are activatable on said inner control panel (11) and/or main control panel (10), such warnings reflecting different operation modes of said refrigerator (1). To this end, a given user will be informed of the current status of the UV light source (6) and will take desired steps accordingly.
  • Distinct visual and audible warnings may also be emitted after activation of said UV light source (6), such warnings, for instance, reflecting an open state of said door (3).

In this case, activation of said UV light source (6) is automatically cancelled as one of the required criteria is not met.

  • said cover (7) being made out of a transparent and non UV permeable, UV-resistant polymeric material ensures that a given user can notice operational state of said UV light source (6) by viewing the cover (7) itself.
  • Said chamber (5) comprises an opaque sealing member (13) encircling said cover (7) is used to support and seal said cover (7).
  • Said sealing member (13) is designed in the form of ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM), a material having a high UV resistance.

Claims (13)

  1. Un réfrigérateur (1) comprenant un compartiment (2), une porte (3) pour accéder au compartiment (2) dans lequel une chambre (5) pour la conservation des aliments est disposée, où ladite chambre (5) présente une source de lumière UV (6) pour empêcher la croissance des micro-organismes dans les aliments conservés dans ladite chambre (5) et un couvercle (7) pour réaliser l'isolation physique de ladite chambre (5) du volume intérieur du compartiment (2), caractérisé en ce que
    ledit couvercle (7) de ladite chambre (5) comprend un deuxième moyen de verrouillage (8) pour réaliser la fermeture dudit couvercle (7) d'une manière verrouillée,
    ladite porte (3) comprend un premier moyen de verrouillage (4) pour réaliser la fermeture de ladite porte (3) d'une manière verrouillée,
    une unité de commande électronique (9) pour commander ledit premier moyen de verrouillage (4) et ledit deuxième moyen de verrouillage (8) et
    ledit couvercle (7) et ladite porte (3) sont automatiquement verrouillés afin de empêcher l'accès lorsque ladite lampe UV est opérationnelle.
  2. Un réfrigérateur (1) selon la Revendication 1 où ladite porte (3) comprend un panneau de commande principal (10) en communication avec ladite unité de commande électronique (9) et ledit couvercle (7) comprend un panneau de commande intérieur (11) en communication avec ladite unité de commande électronique (9), pour exécuter des différents modes de fonctionnement.
  3. Un réfrigérateur (1) selon la Revendication 2 où ladite source de lumière UV (6) peut être activée sur ledit panneau de commande intérieur (11).
  4. Un réfrigérateur (1) selon la Revendication 2 ou 3 où l'activation de ladite source de lumière UV (6) peut être effectuée après le verrouillage du couvercle (7) par ladite unité de commande électronique (9).
  5. Un réfrigérateur (1) selon l'une quelconque des revendications de 2 à 4 où ledit panneau de commande intérieur (11) est inactif dès l'activation de ladite source de lumière UV (6).
  6. Un réfrigérateur (1) selon l'une quelconque des revendications de 2 à 5 où l'activation de ladite source de lumière UV (6) peut être effectuée dès la fermeture subséquente et le verrouillage automatique de ladite porte (3).
  7. Un réfrigérateur (1) selon l'une quelconque des revendications de 2 à 6 où ladite source de lumière UV (6) peut être désactivée sur ledit panneau de commande principal (10).
  8. Un réfrigérateur (1) selon l'une quelconque des revendications de 2 à 7 où les informations en ce qui concerne l'état de fonctionnement de ladite source de lumière UV (6) peuvent être affichées sur ledit panneau de commande principal (10).
  9. Un réfrigérateur (1) selon l'une quelconque des revendications de 2 à 8 où l'activation de ladite source de lumière UV (6) peut être programmée à un moment précis sur ledit panneau de commande intérieur (11).
  10. Un réfrigérateur (1) selon l'une quelconque des revendications précédentes où ledit couvercle (7) est produit d'un matériau polymère transparent, résistant aux UV et imperméable aux UV.
  11. Un réfrigérateur (1) selon la Revendication 10 où ledit couvercle (7) est entouré par un élément d'étanchéité opaque (13) sous la forme de éthylène-propylène-diène monomère (EPDM).
  12. Un réfrigérateur (1) selon la Revendication 10 ou 11 où des photodiodes en carbure de silicium sensible aux UV sont disposées entre ledit couvercle (7) et ledit élément d'étanchéité (13).
  13. Un réfrigérateur (1) selon l'une quelconque des revendications précédentes où des avertissements sonores et visuels sont activés pour informer l'utilisateur de l'étant actuel de la source de lumière UV (6), sur ledit panneau de commande intérieur (11) et/ou ledit panneau de commande principal (10).
