Description

    Field of the Invention
  • The present invention relates to a device, which is able to maintain a container transported in a casing permanently in the same, desired position, even if the casing is handled whatever way.
  • Background Art
  • International and basically also transcontinental exchange of hematopoietic tissue transplant grafts, especially of cord blood, is extremely sensitive to the observance of technical rules during transportation. The tissue specimens travel at -196 °C in special containers - Dewar vessels of "dry shipper" type. The liquid nitrogen in these containers is not free, but absorbed in a ceramic spongy material, and thus safely protected from accidental leakage. All Dewar vessels - basically metal thermos flasks - are fully functional in a vertical position only, and neck-up. During their normal air transport in cargo mode in accordance with International Air Transport Association regulations, these containers are inserted into robust, solid and properly marked boxes. The emphasis is particularly placed on the necessity of maintaining the vertical position. Placing the box on the side, there is immediately a significant leakage of liquid nitrogen vapour; if the box even finds itself upside down, the nitrogen escapes within a few tens of minutes. In accordance with international rules and requirements there is a data logger embedded in the box, which continuously reads and records the temperature inside the Dewar vessel as well as the temperature in the outer casing - in the transport box. When maintaining the required conditions, the system is demonstrable able to preserve the proper temperature for 10 to 12 days.
  • In order to increase the likelihood of good compliance with the transport conditions, not only during the transport of transplant grafts, but also in other fields, where it is necessary to keep the shipped material or product in a predetermined position, it is essential to create such a device, which can maintain a stable position of the container even during manipulation with the casing (e.g. a box), in which the container is stored.
  • The Japanese patent application JP 2005-138896 proposes a device consisting of two hollow spheres, whereas the smaller sphere (a container or a container carrier) is inserted in the larger sphere (casing) and its mobility on the inner wall of the larger sphere is secured by means of three steering devices. The smaller sphere is equipped with the three steering devices, which are placed relatively close to each other. The described embodiment shows a number of drawbacks, e.g. the spherical shape of the outer casing is not suitable for handling the entire device. Furthermore, the steering devices may not stay in touch with the surface of the inner wall when a very rapid movement occurs during handling and so it may leave a stable position and even the two spheres can hit into each other. It is also not clear how the closing of the smaller sphere is solved so as not to cause any problems during its movement within the casing.
  • French patent FR 585827 proposes a device for maintaining a stable position of an object according to the preamble of claim 1, said device having an inner spherical surface and a spherical-cap-shaped carrier equipped with three rolling steering devices, and the carrier being provided with a stabilizing weight. This construction may not provide sufficient stability and is rather complex.
  • Dutch patent NL 1033089 discloses a case for holding bottles so that they are kept level. The case has an inner spherical surface and a spherical-cap-shaped bottle holder with a weighted underside, which can glide freely on the inner spherical surface. This device may not react sufficiently quickly to rapid overturning of the case.
  • The present invention aims at the elimination of the drawbacks of the technical solution known in the art.
  • Disclosure of the Invention
  • Object of the present invention is a device for maintaining a stable position of a container, containing a casing having an inner spherical surface and a container carrier equipped with steering devices, wherein an outer shape of the casing is cubic; the container carrier is in the form of a spherical cap and is equipped with six steering devices, which are sliding elements, preferably spherical sliding elements (rollers), placed at regular distances from each other on its circumference; and the bottom of the spherical cap of the container carrier is provided with a stabilizing weight.
  • In a preferred embodiment of the invention the container carrier has the following dimensions relative to the inner spherical surface of the casing: the diameter of the base of the spherical cap = 1.5 multiple to 2 multiple of the radius of the inner spherical surface of the casing reduced by the size of the sliding element, the radius of the initial sphere that the cap came from = the radius of the inner spherical surface reduced by the size of the sliding element. The size of the sliding element is usually 3 to 5 % of the radius of the inner spherical surface.
  • The space between the outer cubic surface and the inner spherical surface can be preferably filled with, for example, polyurethane mounting foam and/or polystyrene segments in order to increase the mechanical strength and resilience.
  • The shape of the spherical cap facilitates the access to and the fixing of the container; there is no problem with closing the smaller sphere from the document JP 2005-138896 . Using six sliding elements placed as apart as possible, i.e. on the circumference of the spherical cap, increases the stability of the container carrier and minimizes the possibility of turning over during a rough handling of the casing. The stabilizing weight further ensures a maximum eccentricity of the container carrier-container gravity system, which enables a fast and reliable reaction to changes of the outer casing position. The cubic shape of the outer casing facilitates handling, holding and storage of the casing. In addition, the preferred embodiment provides dimensions of the carrier, which further enhance and ensure its stability and speed of reaction to the handling of the casing, because they allow accurate copying of the shape of the outer sphere and large spacing of the sliding elements.
  • The casing is demountably divided into two halves, preferably horizontally, which enables the insertion of the container carrier and of the container. The container is fixed to the container carrier.
  • The device according to the present invention ensures that during any handling, such as tilting or rolling of the outer casing, the inner content remains in a stable, predetermined position.
  • Brief Description of Drawings
    • Fig. 1 represents the outer cubic and the inner spherical surface of the transport casing.
    • Fig. 2 represents views of the device construction with an inserted container, A - top view, B - side view.
Example of Carrying Out the Invention
  • The invention is further illustrated using the drawings.
  • Fig. 1 shows the outer cubic surface 1 and the inner spherical surface 2 of the transport casing. The device construction is shown on Fig. 2 in top view (A) and side view (B). The inner spherical surface 2 is made of fibre glass and its inner surface is accurate and smooth. The space between the spherical surface 2 and the cubic surface 1 is filled with polyurethane mounting foam. There is a carrier 3 of the container 4 in the casing. The carrier 3 in the shape of a spherical cap has six Alwayse® spherical sliding elements 6 on the circumference. The bottom of this spherical cap is equipped with the stabilizing weight 5, increasing the eccentricity of the gravity system and contributing to the preservation of the stable position. The container 4 is fixed to the carrier 3; the container is, in this case, a Dewar vessel of the ,,dry shipper" type. In this arrangement, the container 4 is maintained in a vertical position and the described arrangement is suitable, for example, for the transportation of hematopoietic tissue transplant grafts.
  • During any handling, rotation, or turning the outer casing over, the carrier 3 together with the container 4 fixed to it moves by means of the sliding elements 6 on the spherical surface 2, preventing the rotation or turning of the container 4 over. The weight 5 increases the eccentricity of the gravity system of the carrier 3 and the container 4.
  • Industrial Applicability
  • The device according to the present invention can be used for the transportation of items sensitive to position changes and fragile items. This device enables to keep the items sensitive to position changes or fragile items stored in the container in a stable and predetermined position throughout the transportation or manipulation.
