Definitions

  • the present invention relates to a strapping unit according to the preamble of claim 1 and a method for forming a sealless joint in overlapping portions at the ends of a loop of metal strap by means of such a strapping unit.
  • a strapping unit according to the preamble of claim 1 is previously known from US 4 154 158 A , US 3 794 086 A and GB 2 040 825 A .
  • a disadvantage with these known strapping units is that they achieve a sealless joint in overlapping portions at the ends of a loop of metal strap which will only lock said overlapping metal strap portions to each other in one direction under the effect of a tensile force in the loop. The sealless joint could therefore be broken, and the overlapping metal strap portions consequently released from each other, if the tensile force in the loop is released.
  • the object of the present invention is to achieve a further development of a strapping unit of the type according to the preamble of claim 1 so as to overcome the above-mentioned drawback of the previously known strapping units.
  • the strapping unit according to the invention comprises:
  • the main jaws are moveable towards and away from each other, together with the respective main die holder, between a retracted open position and an advanced active position, the main jaws in the active position together forming a supporting surface for a metal strap received in a passage formed between the main jaws and said one or more main punch member.
  • the auxiliary jaws are moveable towards and away from each other, together with the respective security die holder, between a retracted open position and an advanced active position.
  • the auxiliary jaws are also moveable in relation to the main jaws so as to allow the auxiliary jaws to remain in or be moved to the active position when the main jaws are moved away from the active position after the cutting of mutually interlocking incisions in overlapping portions at the ends of a loop of metal strap received in said passage.
  • Said main die members and said one or more main punch members are arranged to co-operate so as to cut mutually interlocking incisions in overlapping portions at the ends of a loop of metal strap received in said passage, when the respective main punch member is displaced to the punching position with the main jaws located in the active position, whereas said security die members and said security punch member are arranged to co-operate so as to cut security incisions in said overlapping metal strap portions when the security punch member is displaced to the punching position with the auxiliary jaws located in the active position.
  • the incisions formed by the main die members and the main punch members are configured to lock the overlapping metal strap portions to each other in a first direction under the effect of a tensile force in the loop, whereas the security incisions formed by the security die members and the security punch member are configured to lock the overlapping metal strap portions to each other in a second direction opposite said first direction.
  • the security incisions will thereby prevent the sealless joint from being broken due to a possible release of the tension in the loop.
  • the first security die holder is received in a recess in the first main die holder, and the second security die holder is received in a recess in the second main die holder.
  • the strapping unit can be given a compact design.
  • a main jaw and the associated auxiliary jaw are moveable in relation to the housing and in relation to each other by one and the same actuator, and the number of actuators required for controlling the operation of the strapping unit can thereby be reduced.
  • the strapping unit can be given a compact design.
  • the invention also relates to a method according to claim 13 for forming a sealless joint in overlapping portions at the ends of a loop of metal strap by means of a strapping unit of the present invention.
  • Figs 1 and 2 show a strapping unit 1 according to an embodiment of the present invention for forming a sealless joint in overlapping portions at the ends of a loop of metal strap.
  • the strapping unit 1 is here illustrated without a protective cover, which is to cover the central part of the strapping unit in order to protect the mechanisms included therein.
  • the strapping unit 1 comprises a housing 2.

  • the main punch members 11a, 11b are displaceable, together which the main punch holder 10, to and fro between a retracted position (see Fig 3c ) and an advanced punching position (see Fig 5c ) by means of a first punch actuator.
