Definitions
- the invention relates to a security paper for the production of security or valuable documents with an at least partially transparent film element, which is freely accessible at least in some areas on at least one side of the security paper through the security paper.
- the invention further relates to an associated production method for the security paper, a document of value with such a security paper as well as a film element for such a security paper or document of value.
- Security documents such as banknotes, identity cards and the like, are often provided with security elements for security, which allow a verification of the authenticity of the value documents and at the same time serve as protection against unauthorized reproduction.
- Increasingly transparent security features such as transparent windows in banknotes, are becoming increasingly attractive.
- a film provided on all sides with an adhesive layer is applied to a banknote in order to close a previously inserted through opening.
- the film is provided with a security feature, such as a hologram or an optically variable coating.
- the object of the present invention is to improve a security paper of the type mentioned above with regard to the visual appearance of its window area and at the same time to increase the counterfeit protection of the security paper.
- the film element is connected to the security paper via a highly transparent and clearly formed adhesive layer in the region of the freely accessible subareas.
- the freely accessible portions of the film element are often referred to in this description as window areas, regardless of whether the film element is disposed inside or on a surface of the security paper. If a film element arranged on a surface of the security paper is freely accessible through the security paper in a subarea, the security paper in this subarea contains a continuous opening extending up to the film element, to which reference is also often expressly made.
- the invention is based on the idea to improve the visual appearance of the window area by an optimized design of the adhesive layer, with which the film element and the security paper are connected. As a result, the counterfeit protection of the security paper is thereby also increased, since a visual or mechanical inspection of the window area can be performed better and more reliably than in the prior art. Due to the required specific properties in terms of durability, suitability for certain application methods and the required layer thickness, it is often difficult to realize an adhesive coating with a high transparency and low turbidity. Rather, the present inventors have recognized that the adhesive coating often scatters or mattes and thus reduces the transparency and clarity of the film element.
- the adhesive layer has, for at least one of the freely accessible partial regions, a recess which essentially surrounds the region of the partial region.
- the adhesive layer has a recess in the form of the freely accessible portion, which is 1 mm to 2 mm smaller or 1 mm to 2 mm larger than the portion is formed.
- the adhesive layer in the region of at least one of the freely accessible partial regions next to the recess has a pattern region in which the adhesive layer is applied in the form of patterns, characters or a coding.
- a colored adhesive layer can be used with a visible in the visible, infrared and / or ultraviolet color.
- the adhesive layer can thereby be used in the window area as a decorative design element, for displaying information and / or as a further security feature.
- the adhesive layer in the region of at least one of the freely accessible partial regions has a thin region with a reduced layer thickness, wherein the layer thickness is reduced in particular to less than half the layer thickness outside the thin region. This measure also significantly increases the transparency and clarity in the window area.
- the adhesive layer and the recess or the thin region may merge along a sharp boundary, or may have a smooth, continuous transition.
- the adhesive layer is formed from a low refractive index adhesive.
- a low refractive index according to the invention is present if it is less than 1.5, particularly preferably less than 1.4.
- deactivation can be carried out for example by a thermal treatment or by UV irradiation.
- the adhesive of the adhesive layer is smoothed in the region of at least one of the freely accessible partial regions.
- the adhesive may for example be thermally treated, in particular by exposure to laser radiation, or the adhesive layer is calendered in the window area after application of the film element.
- a smoothing of the adhesive layer can also be effected by partial or full-surface application of a lacquer layer in the region of at least one of the freely accessible partial regions.
- a further advantageous variant of the invention is based on the use of two different adhesives with different properties side by side.
- the adhesive layer is formed in a viewing area, which comprises at least one of the freely accessible partial areas, by a highly transparent adhesive and in an adhesion area outside the viewing area by an adhesive having a high adhesive force. Since the two adhesives can each be optimized for their respective task, an adhesive layer with excellent optical properties in the field of vision and excellent adhesive properties in the adhesion area is produced.
- the film element is connected to the security paper via an adhesive layer which has been precisely matched with the through-going opening.
- the adhesive layer is preferably formed in multiple layers, wherein a first adhesive layer of an activatable adhesive, in particular a hot melt adhesive is applied to the security paper, and a second adhesive layer is applied with a at least one of the freely accessible portions enclosing recess on the film element.
- the recess is formed about 1 mm to 2 mm larger than the portion.
- the security paper has a continuous opening which is closed by the film element.
- the film element is connected to the security paper via a highly transparent and clearly formed adhesive layer in the area of the through opening.
- the through-opening can already be produced in papermaking and have characteristic irregularities in the edge region. Alternatively, the through-opening can be made even after papermaking with a sharp edge, z. B. by punching or cutting, especially laser beam cutting produced.
- the film element may, in particular, be a patch applied to the security paper or an applied film strip with a width of several millimeters up to a width of about 30 mm.

- the film element 18 is connected to the banknote substrate 14 via a highly transparent and clearly formed adhesive layer 20 in the area of the through opening 16.
- such an attractive visual appearance is achieved by providing the adhesive layer 20 on the film element 18 before the film application with a recess 22 which essentially encloses the region of the through opening 16.
- the recess 22 is in shape
- the through opening 16 is introduced into the adhesive layer 20, but is designed smaller by 1 mm to 2 mm than the opening 16 in order to absorb tolerances in the application of the film element 18.
- the adhesive layer 20 was also provided with a recess 32 in the form of the through opening 16 which essentially encompasses the area of the through opening 16 before the film application.
- the recess 32 is not smaller, but formed by 1 mm to 2 mm larger than the opening 16, so that when taking into account the tolerances at the, the application of the film element 18, the region of the opening 16 completely free of adhesive. Since the film element 18 is not bonded to the substrate 14 only in a narrow edge region 34 of the opening, a secure connection between the film element 18 and the banknote substrate 14 is nevertheless ensured.
- the transition between the adhesive layer 20 and the recess 22 or 32 can according to the invention with a sharp boundary, as in the Figures 2 and 3 shown, or with a soft and continuous transition 40, as in the embodiment of Fig. 4 shown.

- Fig. 5 shows an embodiment in which the adhesive layer 20, as in the design of the Fig. 2 is recessed in the majority 52 of the window surface, and in which a pattern area 56 is additionally provided in the region of the opening, in which the adhesive layer 20 is applied in the form of patterns, characters or a coding.
- the adhesive layer 20 forms the adhesive layer 20 in the region of the opening 16 in addition to the already at Fig. 2 described circumferential edge 54 a pattern of two concentric rings 56, which is due to the semi-transparency of the adhesive layer 20 can be seen in phantom.
- the adhesive layer 20 can thus be used in the interior of the opening 16 as a decorative design element, for representing a further information and / or as a further security feature.
- the surface portion of the pattern region 56 in the region of the opening 16 is kept so small that the disadvantages associated with a full-surface adhesive layer in the region of the opening do not occur during handling or are at least greatly reduced.
- the adhesive in pattern area 56 may be deactivated thermally or by UV irradiation.
- a recess with layer thickness zero is not provided in the adhesive layer 20 in the area of the through opening 16, but a thin area 62 with a layer thickness reduced with respect to the adhesion area 64 in the overlap of the film element 18 and the substrate 14.
- the layer thickness can be reduced, for example, to less than half or even less than one third of the layer thickness of the adhesive layer in the adhesion region 64.
- the film element thereby has a significantly increased transparency and reduced scatter compared to a full-surface adhesive layer of normal thickness.
- the transition from the maximum layer thickness in the adhesion region 64 to the reduced layer thickness in the thin region 62 may have a sharp limit or, as shown in FIG Fig. 6 , with a smooth, continuous transition 66.
- FIG. 7 Another approach to increase the transparency and clarity of the adhesive layer is illustrated.
- Fig. 7 (a) first shows a banknote with an applied film element 18, which is coated on one side with a full-surface adhesive layer 70. The roughness 72 of the adhesive layer is exaggerated for clarity.
- the adhesive layer 70 is smoothed after the film application in the area of the through opening 16, as in FIG Fig. 7 (b) illustrated.
- the lower roughness 74 results in a lower light scattering and thus a lower mattness and higher transparency of the smoothed adhesive layer and the window area as a whole.
- the smoothing of the adhesive layer 70 can take place in various ways.
- the adhesive layer 70 can be thermally treated in the region of the through opening by laser application, so that the viscosity of the adhesive is reduced, the adhesive flows away and forms a smoother surface.
- the adhesive layer 70 in the window area can be subsequently calendered to obtain a smooth surface structure.
- Such a calendering step can take place, for example, with a Teflon-coated tool in the application machine when the film element 18 is applied.
- Fig. 8 illustrated embodiment of the invention is not the adhesive layer 70 itself smoothed, but the rough adhesive layer 70 is provided in the region of the through opening 16 with a partial or full-surface lacquer layer 80 and thereby reduces the surface scattering of the combined layer structure of adhesive layer 70 and lacquer layer 80.
- Fig. 9 illustrates another approach of the invention based on the use of two different adhesives in the adhesive layer 90, each having different properties.
- the film element 18 before application in a viewing area 92 which comprises at least the region of the through opening 16, with a highly transparent adhesive 94, which has a lower adhesion or reduced resistance under shelters, but the transparency and clarity of the see-through window particularly little affected.
- an adhesive 98 is applied, which is selected predominantly from the point of view of a high adhesive force for securely joining the film element 18 and banknote substrate 14 and whose transparency and scattering properties are not significant.
- the two adhesives 94, 98 can therefore be chosen optimized for their respective task in order to obtain an adhesive layer 90, which combines high adhesive force with excellent transparency and clarity in the window area.
- the sighting area 92 to compensate for register tolerances advantageously has an approximately 1 mm to 2 mm greater extent than the opening to be closed, as in Fig. 9 illustrated.
- Another possibility for avoiding impairments of transparency and clarity in the window area is based on the use of an activatable adhesive with the aid of which the film element can be connected to the substrate via an adhesive layer which has been precisely matched with the through-opening.
- Such an exact registration can be achieved, for example, by first printing on a banknote substrate 14 at least in the edge region of the intended opening a first adhesive layer 100 of an activatable adhesive, for example a hot-melt adhesive, as in FIG Fig. 10 (a) shown. Then, the banknote substrate 14 becomes along with the not yet activated adhesive layer 100 provided with the desired opening 16, as in Fig. 10 (b) shown. The remaining adhesive layer 100 is then exactly matched to the outline of the opening 16.
- an activatable adhesive for example a hot-melt adhesive
- a film member 18 is provided and provided with a second adhesive layer 102 and a recess 104 which is slightly larger, in the embodiment 2 mm larger than the banknote opening 16 is formed.
- the film element 18 is applied to the substrate 14.
- the activatable adhesive 100 is activated on the banknote substrate 14, so that the film element 18 is finally firmly bonded to the substrate 14, as in FIG Fig. 10 (d) shown.
- the activation can take place in the case of a hot-melt adhesive, for example by laser application, the necessary heating being produced by the radiation absorbed by the substrate or by the activatable adhesive itself.
- the activatable adhesive is only printed after the hole has been produced in the edge region of the opening.
- an adhesive layer with a recess which is slightly larger than the banknote opening is applied to the film element and the activatable adhesive is activated during or after the film application.
- an exact registration of adhesive layer and opening is achieved by the combination of a passivated activatable adhesive layer 100 on the substrate 14 and an adhesive layer 102 recessed further than the opening on the film element 18.
- a complete strip-shaped region of activatable adhesive can also be applied to the substrate. It is essential, the film strip to be applied over it is wider than the adhesion area on the substrate. In its edge region of the film strip is provided with a second adhesive layer to ensure the adhesion of the film strip over its entire width.
- the adhesive can be deactivated in all embodiments after the film application, for example by a thermal treatment or by UV irradiation.
- the transparency and clarity of the window region is substantially independent of the transparency of the adhesive, so that in these cases, colored adhesive layers can be used.
- colored adhesives may be advantageous in embodiments in which the adhesive layer, as in FIG Fig. 5 is additionally visible in the form of patterns, characters or a coding inside the window area. It also lends itself to the use of adhesives that are colored exclusively or additionally outside the visible spectral range and, for example, have IRabsorbing or UV-absorbing properties that can be evaluated as part of a mechanical authenticity test.
- the adhesive cutout in all exemplary embodiments can be carried out prior to film application by applying a partial hydrophobic precoating to the film element or by partial removal of the adhesive layer by means of a washing process.
- the adhesive layer can be removed in the region of the through opening, for example by means of laser ablation.
- Direct printing of a structured adhesive layer on the film element for example by a gravure, flexo, screen, offset or transfer printing process, is also possible.
- Suitable adhesives for the invention are, in particular, hotmelt adhesives (hotmelts), UV or electron beam-curing adhesives, solvent-based or water-based systems, hybrid systems and 1-component adhesives or 2-component adhesives.
- hotmelt adhesives hotmelts
- UV or electron beam-curing adhesives solvent-based or water-based systems
- hybrid systems 1-component adhesives or 2-component adhesives.

According to the invention, it is provided in the case of a generic security paper that the film element is connected to the security paper via a highly transparent and clearly formed adhesive layer in the region of the freely accessible subareas. The freely accessible portions of the film element are often referred to in this description as window areas, regardless of whether the film element is disposed inside or on a surface of the security paper. If a film element arranged on a surface of the security paper is freely accessible through the security paper in a subarea, the security paper in this subarea contains a continuous opening extending up to the film element, to which reference is also often expressly made.
The invention is based on the idea to improve the visual appearance of the window area by an optimized design of the adhesive layer, with which the film element and the security paper are connected. Known see-through windows in banknotes often appear as a result in transparency with low transparency or with a cloudy visual appearance, which ultimately amounts to a reduction in counterfeit protection, because the visual or mechanical inspection of the see-through window or arranged in this area security element is impaired.
In a preferred variant of the invention, it is provided that the adhesive layer has, for at least one of the freely accessible partial regions, a recess which essentially surrounds the region of the partial region. Advantageously, the adhesive layer has a recess in the form of the freely accessible portion, which is 1 mm to 2 mm smaller or 1 mm to 2 mm larger than the portion is formed. On the one hand, this measure achieves a secure connection between the film element and the security paper and, on the other hand, ensures excellent transparency and clarity of the window area, since at most a narrow circumferential adhesive edge remains in the region of the opening.
In addition, it can be provided that the adhesive layer in the region of at least one of the freely accessible partial regions next to the recess has a pattern region in which the adhesive layer is applied in the form of patterns, characters or a coding. In this case, a colored adhesive layer can be used with a visible in the visible, infrared and / or ultraviolet color. The adhesive layer can thereby be used in the window area as a decorative design element, for displaying information and / or as a further security feature.
According to another likewise advantageous variant of the invention, the adhesive layer in the region of at least one of the freely accessible partial regions has a thin region with a reduced layer thickness, wherein the layer thickness is reduced in particular to less than half the layer thickness outside the thin region. This measure also significantly increases the transparency and clarity in the window area.
The adhesive layer and the recess or the thin region may merge along a sharp boundary, or may have a smooth, continuous transition.
In a further advantageous variant of the invention, the adhesive layer is formed from a low refractive index adhesive. A low refractive index according to the invention is present if it is less than 1.5, particularly preferably less than 1.4.
In some embodiments, it is advisable to deactivate the adhesive of the adhesive layer in the area of at least one of the freely accessible partial areas, so as to reduce the tack of the adhesive layer. Such deactivation can be carried out for example by a thermal treatment or by UV irradiation.
According to a further preferred variant of the invention, the adhesive of the adhesive layer is smoothed in the region of at least one of the freely accessible partial regions. For this purpose, the adhesive may for example be thermally treated, in particular by exposure to laser radiation, or the adhesive layer is calendered in the window area after application of the film element.
A smoothing of the adhesive layer can also be effected by partial or full-surface application of a lacquer layer in the region of at least one of the freely accessible partial regions.
A further advantageous variant of the invention is based on the use of two different adhesives with different properties side by side. For this purpose, the adhesive layer is formed in a viewing area, which comprises at least one of the freely accessible partial areas, by a highly transparent adhesive and in an adhesion area outside the viewing area by an adhesive having a high adhesive force. Since the two adhesives can each be optimized for their respective task, an adhesive layer with excellent optical properties in the field of vision and excellent adhesive properties in the adhesion area is produced.
According to yet another advantageous variant of the invention, the film element is connected to the security paper via an adhesive layer which has been precisely matched with the through-going opening. For this purpose, the adhesive layer is preferably formed in multiple layers, wherein a first adhesive layer of an activatable adhesive, in particular a hot melt adhesive is applied to the security paper, and a second adhesive layer is applied with a at least one of the freely accessible portions enclosing recess on the film element. Preferably, the recess is formed about 1 mm to 2 mm larger than the portion. After the film element has been applied to the security paper, the activatable adhesive is activated, thus producing the precisely matched, secure connection between the film element and the security paper. The continuous opening or the window region can be produced before or after the application of the activatable adhesive layer.
In an advantageous variant of the invention, the security paper has a continuous opening which is closed by the film element. The film element is connected to the security paper via a highly transparent and clearly formed adhesive layer in the area of the through opening. The through-opening can already be produced in papermaking and have characteristic irregularities in the edge region. Alternatively, the through-opening can be made even after papermaking with a sharp edge, z. B. by punching or cutting, especially laser beam cutting produced. The film element may, in particular, be a patch applied to the security paper or an applied film strip with a width of several millimeters up to a width of about 30 mm.
In another likewise advantageous variant of the invention, the film element is at least partially embedded in the security paper and freely accessible in window areas on one or both sides of the security paper, wherein the film element is connected to the security paper via a highly transparent and clearly formed adhesive layer in the region of the window areas. In particular, the film element represents a narrow security strip or a wide security band with a width of up to about 30 mm. For example, the film element may be in the form of a window security element, such as a window security thread, which protrudes at certain window areas on one side of the security paper and There is freely accessible. The film element can also form a pendulum security element, such as a pendulum security thread, which alternately emerges in certain window areas on opposite sides of the security paper and is freely accessible there. In an advantageous variant, the security paper is embodied as a single layer, wherein the film element is at least partially embedded in the one paper layer. According to other likewise advantageous variants, the security paper is formed in two or more layers and the film element is at least partially embedded in one of the paper layers. A further advantageous possibility is to embed the film element at least partially between two of the paper layers in a two- or multi-layered security paper.
The film element expediently has at least one security feature, which is preferably arranged in one of the freely accessible subregions. The security feature is in particular a diffractive structure, such as a hologram or a hologram-like diffraction structure, a matt structure, a metallization, a perforation, a lens or micromirror structure, a micro-optical system, in particular a micro-optical moiré magnification arrangement, a thin-film element, a polarization filter or a Imprint formed, which has at least one substance with optically variable, luminescent, electrically conductive or magnetic properties.
The invention also includes a value document, such as a banknote, an identification card and the like, with a security paper of the type described and a film element for a security paper or a value document of the type described.
The invention further comprises a method for producing a security paper or value document of the type described, in which a continuous opening is made in the security paper or document of value, an at least partially transparent film element is provided and provided with an adhesive layer which is highly transparent and clear formed in the region of the through-opening, and in which the through-opening is closed with the film element.
The invention further comprises a method for producing a security paper or value document of the type described, in which an at least partially transparent film element is provided, the film element is at least partially embedded in a security paper or document of value, so that it is in window areas on one or both sides of the Security paper is freely accessible through the security paper, and in which the film element is provided with an adhesive layer, which is highly transparent and clear in the area of the window areas.
If, as described above, the adhesive layer is provided with a recess which essentially surrounds the region of the through opening or one of the window regions, the film element may be provided with a hydrophobic coating in the form of the desired recess before application of the adhesive layer to achieve local repulsion of the adhesive layer. The hydrophobic coating expediently has a surface tension of less than 30 × 10 -3 N / m.
The adhesive layer can also be removed only after the film application in the area of the continuous opening or a window area, for example by means of laser ablation. The adhesive layer can also be applied in structured form with the desired recess to the security paper or document of value, in particular printed.
It may be expedient to apply the adhesive layer in the area of the through opening or of a window area in a pattern area in the form of patterns, characters or a coding.
Furthermore, a method variant is preferred in which the adhesive layer is applied in the region of the continuous opening or a window region as a thin region with a reduced layer thickness. In this case, the adhesive layer is applied either with a soft, continuous transition between the adhesive layer and the recess or thin area or with a sharp boundary between the adhesive layer and the recess or thin area.
According to another variant of the method, the adhesive is deactivated in the area of the through opening or of a window area, in particular by thermal treatment or UV irradiation.
Alternatively, the adhesive of the adhesive layer can be smoothed in the area of the through opening or of a window area, in particular by thermal treatment or by calendering.
In a likewise preferred variant of the method, the adhesive layer is provided partially or completely with a lacquer layer in the region of the continuous opening or of a window region.
According to a further variant, if a highly transparent adhesive is applied to the film element in a viewing area which comprises at least the continuous opening or a window area, an adhesive of high adhesive force is applied to the film element in an adhesion area outside the field of view.
It is also preferred if a first adhesive layer made of an activatable adhesive, in particular a hotmelt adhesive, is applied to the security paper or document of value, and a second adhesive layer having a recess enclosing the continuous opening or a window region is applied to the film element, and the activatable Adhesive is activated after the application or embedding of the film element on or in the security paper or document of value. It is also conceivable to produce the continuous opening or the window area after the application of the activatable adhesive layer or, conversely, to apply the activatable adhesive layer after the continuous opening or the window area has been produced.
In addition to the advantages already mentioned in the visual appearance, which ultimately mean an increase in the protection against counterfeiting, improved design of security papers or documents of value can also be achieved by the design according to the invention. Especially in the embodiments with recesses, thin areas or deactivated adhesive areas, the adhesion of dirt on the window rear side is effectively suppressed and the risk of build-up of adhesive the counter-pressure rollers of a printing machine in the window area and the risk of blocking of substrates or cut banknotes in packs effectively countered.

For all described designs comes as substrate material any type of paper into consideration, in particular cotton vellum paper. Of course, it is also possible to use paper which contains a proportion of polymeric material in the range of 0 <x <100% by weight.
Furthermore, it is generally conceivable, although not currently preferred, that the substrate material is a plastic film, for. B. a polyester film is. The film may also be monoaxially or biaxially stretched. The stretching of the film, inter alia, leads to it receiving polarizing properties that can be used as another security feature. It may also be expedient if the substrate material of the security paper is a multilayer composite which has at least one layer of paper or a paper-like material. Such a composite is characterized by an extremely high stability, which is for the durability of the security paper or value document of great advantage.
It is also conceivable, however, to use a multilayer, paper-free composite material as the substrate material. These materials are also not preferred at present, but can be used with advantage in certain climatic regions of the earth.
All materials used as substrate material may have additives that serve as a mark of authenticity. It is primarily to think of luminescent, which are preferably transparent in the visible wavelength range and in the non-visible wavelength range by a suitable tool, for. B. a UV or IR radiation emitting radiation source can be excited to produce a visible or at least detectable with auxiliary luminescence. Other security features can be used with advantage, as long as they do not affect the viewing of the imprint or only slightly.
The film element may be formed as a patch covering a partial surface of the substrate or as a strip extending over the entire length or width of the security paper or document of value. As materials for the film are primarily plastics, in particular PET (polyethylene terephthalate), PBT (polybutylene terephthalate), PEN (polyethylene naphthalate), PP (Polyproyplen), PA (polyamide), PE (polyethylene), into consideration. The film may also be monoaxially or biaxially stretched.

In this way, on the one hand, the
As a further advantage of the design according to the invention, improved handling of the banknotes is achieved. By the window area almost completely detecting

The surface portion of the

The smoothing of the
In contrast, in an
Another possibility for avoiding impairments of transparency and clarity in the window area is based on the use of an activatable adhesive with the aid of which the film element can be connected to the substrate via an adhesive layer which has been precisely matched with the through-opening.
In an alternative variant of the method, the activatable adhesive is only printed after the hole has been produced in the edge region of the opening. Here, too, an adhesive layer with a recess which is slightly larger than the banknote opening is applied to the film element and the activatable adhesive is activated during or after the film application.
In both variants, an exact registration of adhesive layer and opening is achieved by the combination of a passivated activatable
In order to reduce the tack of the adhesive layer in the region of the through
As already explained in more detail above, the adhesive cutout in all exemplary embodiments can be carried out prior to film application by applying a partial hydrophobic precoating to the film element or by partial removal of the adhesive layer by means of a washing process.
After the film application, the adhesive layer can be removed in the region of the through opening, for example by means of laser ablation. Direct printing of a structured adhesive layer on the film element, for example by a gravure, flexo, screen, offset or transfer printing process, is also possible.
Suitable adhesives for the invention are, in particular, hotmelt adhesives (hotmelts), UV or electron beam-curing adhesives, solvent-based or water-based systems, hybrid systems and 1-component adhesives or 2-component adhesives.
