Definitions
- the invention relates to an aircraft fuel having a freezing point of -47 ° C or lower based on synthetic hydrocarbons with an isoparaffin content of more than 75% by mass, and a method for producing such an aircraft fuel starting from particular biogenic alcohols.
- Aircraft may be powered by engines or turbines or combinations thereof.
- Engines are usually operated with different types of gasoline fuels known as Avgas (Aviation Gasoline).
- Avgas Aviation Gasoline
- Jets, helicopters and military aircraft are powered by a turbine.
- the kerosene with a higher flash point is used in these types of aircraft with a higher boiling point than petrol. If, for example, due to the particular altitude, fuels with particularly good cold behavior are required when using the military aircraft, then mixtures of kerosene and gasoline are used.
- the aviation-type aviation turbine kerosene (Avtur) fuels are the most important because they are used in civil aviation and, for the most part, in military aircraft.
- Jet A1 The turbine fuel standardized for commercial air traffic is Jet A1.
- the quality requirements for Jet A1 are based on the very stringent requirements of the British Ministry of Defense (DEF standard 91 / issue 5 of 8 February 2005 for jet kerosene jet fuel, NATO Code F-35) and ASTM D 1655-04 for aviation Turbine Fuels.
- the turbine fuel must have a cold behavior, expressed as a freezing point, of not higher than -47 ° C.
- the fuel must not contain any impurities.
- To check solid and semi-volatile impurities the "existent gum" is determined.
- MSEP Micro Separometer Rating
- water can enter the product, which must be easily separable from the hydrocarbon phase and must not form an emulsion. Microbial growth can occur at the interface between Jet A1 and water and the hydrocarbons can be degraded microbiologically.
- the impurities or emulsified water may displace filters and block the supply of fuel to the turbine.
- Unsaturated compounds such as olefins can degrade the oxidation and thermal stability.
- the thermal stability can be tested according to ASTM D3241 (JFTOT) or in a coker test (ASTM D1660). Especially with supersonic aircraft, this test value plays a major role.
- options for improving the oxidation stability of aircraft fuels are described in International Patent Application WO 00/11117 A (Exxon).
- the fuels should also burn completely without forming soot. Requirements for this are limit values for the smoke point or smoke point and naphthalene content. Since aromatic hydrocarbons have a long burnout time and burn worst, the naphthalene and aromatics content is limited. However, for the takeoff and landing phase of an aircraft, a lot of power is required for a short time, and the required amounts of fuel do not burn completely in these operations. Increased and frequently visible emissions of soot and particulates are the result. A reduction of these emissions is a requirement of the hour.
- the synthetic fuels In order to be successfully used in practice, the synthetic fuels must be prepared by processes that ensure that all requirements for aviation fuels, especially in terms of cold resistance, are met. It is an essential finding of the present invention that the ratio of isoparaffins to normal paraffins in the synthetic hydrocarbon fuel must be above a value of 3 in order to achieve the required freezing point of ⁇ -47 ° C.
- the isoparaffins are the optimum components of the hydrocarbon mixture because they have better refrigeration behavior with the same number of carbon atoms in the molecule and burn much faster and more completely than aromatics, whereby less unburned hydrocarbons, soot and particulates are emitted. Isoparaffins also have lower ignition temperatures and higher cetane numbers than aromatics, which is important for starting and use in turbines and especially in diesel engines.
- a hydrocarbon mixture can be produced in various ways, the Fischer-Tropsch process being the most well-known in the art. However, it is also possible, for example, to first produce methanol from the synthesis gas and then to convert this via the process stage of the production of olefinic intermediates into a hydrocarbon mixture.
- the aim of the invention are thus fuels whose use on the one hand, the environment is less stressed, on the other hand, the existing strict requirements and quality requirements can be met in aircraft fuels.
- biomass In order to improve the environmental footprint of aviation fuels, one can not rely on products from fossil sources, but must use products made from renewable resources, in particular from biomass. This is important because when biomass is used, it produces products that are CO 2 -neutral, unlike products derived from coal, petroleum products, natural gas or other fossil resources, because the greenhouse gas that they ultimately produce from biomass is returned from the biosphere to biomass renewed biomass production can be consumed.
- biodiesel or biofuel are not suitable as such products, since such products are not available from renewable raw materials in the required quantity and must not be mixed with conventional jet turbine fuels because of technical disadvantages.
- the biomass may consist of agricultural and forestry wastes of vegetable and possibly of animal origin, vegetable oils, fats and their processing products (for example glycerine), biogases, sewage gas, landfill gas and other waste materials.
- the required amount can be adapted to the increasing demand.
- the fuels to be used according to the invention must be miscible with the conventional fuels, so that only those come into question, which consist of hydrocarbons.
- Synthetic fuels can be produced from synthesis gas because synthesis gas can be produced from natural gas, coal, petroleum residues, biomass and other carbon-containing wastes. Synthetic fuels have the advantage that the synthesis process can be controlled so that little to no aromatics, in particular no polynuclear aromatics arise. The purification of the synthesis gas is technically solved, so that the synthesis gas contains no sulfur compounds and other compounds with foreign elements.
- Synthesis gas (CO + H 2 ) can be generated by various methods become.
- Essential processes are gasification processes that are used for solid and liquid feedstocks (eg coal, crude oil residues). From natural gas synthesis gas is generated by reforming.
- Purified biogas, landfill gas, sewage gases and other gases from the gasification of biomass eg: wood gas
- the preferred starting materials for the production of synthesis gas because they come from renewable resources and the CO 2 balance does not deteriorate.
- the hydrocarbon mixtures produced synthetically from biomass have a high proportion of the radionuclide 14 C.
- the half-life of 14 C is 5730 years, from which it can be calculated that after 55,000 years of storage of a dead carbon-containing biomass, the proportion of 14 C is below the detection limit.
- Coal, oil and natural gas are of fossil origin and have virtually no detectable 14 C content and can therefore be distinguished from freshly formed biomass using 14 C radionuclide determination methods (C14 radiocarbon method).
- C14 radiocarbon method 14 C radionuclide determination methods
- biomass gasification processes produce little synthesis gas on a case-by-case basis, then the use or co-use of natural gas as the next feedstock to produce syngas would be recommended to minimize CO 2 emissions and emissions of other undesirable combustion products.
- the biofuel produced in this way may possibly also be mixed with synthetic fuels from coal, natural gas, petroleum residues and C-containing waste or / and with conventional fuel.
- synthetic fuels from biomass based on the 14 C detection is recognizable.
- the purity of a synthetic fuel is easily verifiable, since for a given synthetic fuel from biomass each of a specific content of 14 C can be determined, which must then be detectable in a product, be it a pure product or a product with a specific Amount of other admixtures.
- biogenic component is based on the 14 C content in the syngas used or the fuel produced from it by means of a accurate analytical technique such as nuclear radionuclide technology or mass spectrometry.
- Table 1 compares the properties of various synthetic hydrocarbon mixtures of biomass (BioSyn 1 to BioSyn 4) with the values for a typical aircraft fuel according to Jet A1 and the requirements for aircraft fuels Jet A1 and JP-7, respectively.
- the table also contains the corresponding requirements for diesel fuel for vehicles and engines according to standard EN 590.
- the fuels BioSyn 1 and 2 are synthetically produced kerosene, 1 is structurally hydrogenated and contains no aromatics.
- the fuels BioSyn 3 and 4 are examples of how larger quantities could be made available by expanding the boiling range.
- the BioSyn 3 fuel is a synthetic gas oil with a boiling range different from the standard for Jet A1. Due to the composition of the synthetic gas oil, however, despite the higher boiling position, all other specification values of Jet A1 are complied with.
- BioSyn 4 synthetic fuel is a broad-cut middle distillate that can be taken directly from the total distillation fraction or mixed with light kerosene and a light gas oil. This fuel BioSyn 4 meets all requirements, with the boiling end is within the allowable limits.

Abstract
Description
The invention relates to an aircraft fuel having a freezing point of -47 ° C or lower based on synthetic hydrocarbons with an isoparaffin content of more than 75% by mass, and a method for producing such an aircraft fuel starting from particular biogenic alcohols.
Traffic on the ground and in the air is constantly increasing. Since the fossil fuels for the operation of aircraft and motor vehicles are predominantly produced from the fossil raw material crude oil, the pollution of the atmosphere with the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) and the import dependency of production and the functioning infrastructure of industrialized countries without their own increase in proportion sufficient crude oil reserves too. As a first countermeasure, the EU now intends to add fuels from renewable resources to known conventional fuels. Petrol should contain 5% biofuel (especially ethanol of biogenic origin) and diesel fuel 5% biodiesel (especially fatty acid methyl ester, FAME). Such Admixture to petrol and diesel fuels is today no longer associated with any fundamental technical problems.
For aeronautical fuels, no corresponding suitable admixtures of biogenic origin have been considered. Biosprit and biodiesel must not be mixed with aviation fuels because of their application problems. It would therefore be highly desirable if environmentally friendly fuels from renewable and therefore CO 2 -neutral raw materials could be used at least as admixtures for aviation turbine fuels in order to reduce the growing environmental impact of the increasing air traffic and to meet the particularly strong demand in this area. Since aviation fuels not only have an environmentally harmful CO 2 balance, but also cause soot and nitrogen oxide emissions, work is underway to improve such fuels by modification or admixtures, in particular to make them more environmentally friendly.
Aircraft may be powered by engines or turbines or combinations thereof. Engines are usually operated with different types of gasoline fuels known as Avgas (Aviation Gasoline). Currently, there are still few small aircraft with diesel engines, which is why for such engines no special fuel is provided, but conventional diesel fuel according to EN 590 is used.
Jets, helicopters and military aircraft are powered by a turbine. For safety reasons, the kerosene with a higher flash point is used in these types of aircraft with a higher boiling point than petrol. If, for example, due to the particular altitude, fuels with particularly good cold behavior are required when using the military aircraft, then mixtures of kerosene and gasoline are used.
In the case of turbine fuels, the aviation-type aviation turbine kerosene (Avtur) fuels are the most important because they are used in civil aviation and, for the most part, in military aircraft.
The turbine fuel standardized for commercial air traffic is Jet A1. The quality requirements for Jet A1 are based on the very stringent requirements of the British Ministry of Defense (DEF standard 91 / issue 5 of 8 February 2005 for jet kerosene jet fuel, NATO Code F-35) and ASTM D 1655-04 for aviation Turbine Fuels.
Due to the low temperatures at the usual altitudes, the turbine fuel must have a cold behavior, expressed as a freezing point, of not higher than -47 ° C.
Furthermore, the fuel must not contain any impurities. To check solid and semi-volatile impurities the "existent gum" is determined. However, more important are the investigations of the water compatibility and the water separation capacity by testing the water reaction and the MSEP (Micro Separometer Rating). Especially during transport and storage in moist areas, water can enter the product, which must be easily separable from the hydrocarbon phase and must not form an emulsion. Microbial growth can occur at the interface between Jet A1 and water and the hydrocarbons can be degraded microbiologically. The impurities or emulsified water may displace filters and block the supply of fuel to the turbine.
One currently neglected aspect is the environmental impact of rising air traffic.
So that fuels can be refueled all over the world, so far no special environmental requirements are placed on the fuel. Thus, despite the known disadvantages of the production of sulfur oxides, for example, a sulfur content of max 0.3% is allowed.
The fuels should also burn completely without forming soot.
The consumption of jet fuel based on kerosene has increased so far. Kerosines are also needed for other purposes, such as the production of winter diesel fuel and distillate fuel oil. In order to meet the increasing demand for kerosene, the specification for the cooling behavior of Jet A1 has already been reduced from the original -50 ° C to -47 ° C. In the US, the Freezing Point limit was even widened to -40 ° C to make larger quantities of jet fuel (Jet A) available. Since the start of boiling of kerosene can not be significantly reduced because of the flashpoint limit value, a slightly higher yield of aviation grade kerosene from a crude oil could be achieved by raising the freezing point.
There are numerous alternatives to these conventional petroleum product manufacturing processes, e.g. the production of synthetic hydrocarbons from synthesis gas.
- a) Synthesis gas (CO + H 2 ) can be produced by various methods. Essential processes are gasification processes that are used for solid and liquid feedstocks (eg coal, crude oil residues). From natural gas synthesis gas is generated by reforming.
- b) From a synthesis gas, a hydrocarbon mixture can be produced using various methods, the Fischer Tropsch process being the most well known pertinent process.
- c) If necessary, to influence the concrete composition of a synthetically produced hydrocarbon mixture for a particular end use, the mixture obtained in step b) is treated with hydrogen (hydrogenated or hydrocracked) even at high pressures and temperatures and in fractions ( eg kerosene, gas oil) corresponding Siedelage decomposed (distillation).
In order to be successfully used in practice, the synthetic fuels must be prepared by processes that ensure that all requirements for aviation fuels, especially in terms of cold resistance, are met. It is an essential finding of the present invention that the ratio of isoparaffins to normal paraffins in the synthetic hydrocarbon fuel must be above a value of 3 in order to achieve the required freezing point of <-47 ° C.
The isoparaffins are the optimum components of the hydrocarbon mixture because they have better refrigeration behavior with the same number of carbon atoms in the molecule and burn much faster and more completely than aromatics, whereby less unburned hydrocarbons, soot and particulates are emitted. Isoparaffins also have lower ignition temperatures and higher cetane numbers than aromatics, which is important for starting and use in turbines and especially in diesel engines.
As mentioned above, from a synthesis gas, a hydrocarbon mixture can be produced in various ways, the Fischer-Tropsch process being the most well-known in the art. However, it is also possible, for example, to first produce methanol from the synthesis gas and then to convert this via the process stage of the production of olefinic intermediates into a hydrocarbon mixture.

- 1) In a first step, eg from biomass by fermentation with suitable enzymes (see also

In this process, in which, inter alia, methanol is converted to a zeolite catalyst (SAPO-34) in C2 to C5 olefins, it is important that there is so much methanol in the alcohol mixture that after dehydration at least 50% by mass Odd olefins (eg propylene) and isoolefins are obtained in the olefin mixture. - 3) The olefins are then prepared by known methods (eg
US 4,417,088 US 4,827,064 US 4,828,073 US 4,990,709 - 4) This hydrocarbon mixture is hydrogenated in order to saturate residual double bonds and removal of interfering compounds (eg aromatics) and then separated by distillation, the fraction is withdrawn with a boiling point of 160 ° C and a boiling point of 300 ° C maximum as aviation turbine fuel from the fractionation.
The aim of the invention are thus fuels whose use on the one hand, the environment is less stressed, on the other hand, the existing strict requirements and quality requirements can be met in aircraft fuels.
This object is achieved by fuels according to claims 1 and 2, 5, 7 to 9 and 12, processes for the preparation of such fuels according to claims 4 and 11 and uses of such fuels or by the claimed methods 4 and 11 available fuels according to claims 3, 6, 10 and 13 achieved.
In order to improve the environmental footprint of aviation fuels, one can not rely on products from fossil sources, but must use products made from renewable resources, in particular from biomass.
However, biodiesel or biofuel are not suitable as such products, since such products are not available from renewable raw materials in the required quantity and must not be mixed with conventional jet turbine fuels because of technical disadvantages.
The admixture of vegetable oils or derivatives derived therefrom (e.g., FAME) is e.g. For this reason, it is not possible because it would adversely affect cold behavior, water absorption capacity - with all the consequences - existing gum and stability.
The inventors therefore came to the conclusion that only synthetic fuels from renewable biomass come into question, so-called biogenic fuels from biospheric carbon.
Unlike synthetic fuels derived from fossil petroleum, natural gas, or coal-based feedstocks, whose original carbon fraction was originally bound by biological processes, contains synthetic hydrocarbons Fuels from "young" biomass, the carbon isotope 14 C largely in the natural quantities. The presence of 14 C carbon, as measured by per se known techniques, can therefore serve as a determinable parameter to detect and control the use of synthetic fuels from biomass.
Producing synthetic fuels from biomass, usually by a per se known method in which the crude biomass is converted in a first step in synthesis gas, which is then converted catalytically into a hydrocarbon composition, one can go back to a much broader raw material base grab as eg in the production of biodiesel, for which special oilseed crops are usually required. For example, the biomass may consist of agricultural and forestry wastes of vegetable and possibly of animal origin, vegetable oils, fats and their processing products (for example glycerine), biogases, sewage gas, landfill gas and other waste materials.
If synthetic fuels of biogenic origin are mixed with conventional fuels, the required amount can be adapted to the increasing demand. For this purpose, the fuels to be used according to the invention must be miscible with the conventional fuels, so that only those come into question, which consist of hydrocarbons.
Large quantities of synthetic fuels can be produced from synthesis gas because synthesis gas can be produced from natural gas, coal, petroleum residues, biomass and other carbon-containing wastes. Synthetic fuels have the advantage that the synthesis process can be controlled so that little to no aromatics, in particular no polynuclear aromatics arise. The purification of the synthesis gas is technically solved, so that the synthesis gas contains no sulfur compounds and other compounds with foreign elements.
Synthesis gas (CO + H 2 ) can be generated by various methods become. Essential processes are gasification processes that are used for solid and liquid feedstocks (eg coal, crude oil residues). From natural gas synthesis gas is generated by reforming.
Buchholz et al., Using Carbon-14 Isotope Tracing to Investigate Molecular Structure Effects of the Oxygenate Dibutyl Maleate on Soot Emissions from a DI Diesel Engine, in: SAE Transactions: Journal of Fuels and Lubricants, January 16, 2004 und die darin zitierte Literatur. Synthesegas.Purified biogas, landfill gas, sewage gases and other gases from the gasification of biomass (eg: wood gas) according to the invention, however, the preferred starting materials for the production of synthesis gas, because they come from renewable resources and the CO 2 balance does not deteriorate. In contrast to synthetic products from coal, petroleum residues and natural gas, according to the invention to be used, the hydrocarbon mixtures produced synthetically from biomass have a high proportion of the radionuclide 14 C. The half-life of 14 C is 5730 years, from which it can be calculated that after 55,000 years of storage of a dead carbon-containing biomass, the proportion of 14 C is below the detection limit. Coal, oil and natural gas are of fossil origin and have virtually no detectable 14 C content and can therefore be distinguished from freshly formed biomass using 14 C radionuclide determination methods (C14 radiocarbon method). For the relevant analysis and application possibilities in the fuel sector, reference may be made, for example, to the publication of BA Buchholz et al., Using Carbon-14 Isotopes Tracing to Investigate Molecular Structure Effects of the Oxygenate Dibutyl Maleate on Soot Emissions from a DI Diesel Engine, in: SAE Transactions: Journal of Fuels and Lubricants, January 16, 2004 and the literature cited therein. What was said above for the raw materials also applies to the products made from them, eg synthesis gas.
In order to minimize the emission of the greenhouse gas CO 2 , it is necessary to synthesize the synthetic hydrocarbon mixture from biomass. The CO 2 formed in the combustion of such a hydrocarbon mixture is taken up by a growing biomass and converted back into biomass in the path of photosynthesis with release of oxygen.
If the biomass gasification processes produce little synthesis gas on a case-by-case basis, then the use or co-use of natural gas as the next feedstock to produce syngas would be recommended to minimize CO 2 emissions and emissions of other undesirable combustion products.
Depending on the requirements of the emission limits, the biofuel produced in this way may possibly also be mixed with synthetic fuels from coal, natural gas, petroleum residues and C-containing waste or / and with conventional fuel. In any case, however, the use of synthetic fuels from biomass based on the 14 C detection is recognizable. The purity of a synthetic fuel is easily verifiable, since for a given synthetic fuel from biomass each of a specific content of 14 C can be determined, which must then be detectable in a product, be it a pure product or a product with a specific Amount of other admixtures. The same applies to a so-called "co-gasification", wherein synthesis gas is generated from a mixture of biogenic and fossil raw materials: Again, the biogenic component is based on the 14 C content in the syngas used or the fuel produced from it by means of a accurate analytical technique such as nuclear radionuclide technology or mass spectrometry.
If the CO 2 emissions are to be produced only from pure biofuel, then 100% of the biofuel must be used. If the reduction in emissions in terms of soot and particulate matters in the foreground, then mixtures of pure biofuel and synthetically produced hydrocarbon mixtures can be used. If, for reasons of cost or availability, only small amounts of biogenic fuel and synthetic fuels are available, they can also be mixed with conventional fuel. The emission reductions are, however, correspondingly lower.
Die erfindungsgemäßen Treibstoffe BioSyn 1 und 2 erfüllen sogar die strengeren Anforderungen für Militärflugzeuge (JP-7).The characteristics listed in Table 1 show that the specification values for Jet A1 and thus also for Jet A can be easily met. The BioSyn 1 and 2 fuels of the present invention even meet the stricter requirements for military aircraft (JP-7).
The fuels BioSyn 1 and 2 are synthetically produced kerosene, 1 is structurally hydrogenated and contains no aromatics.
The fuels BioSyn 3 and 4 are examples of how larger quantities could be made available by expanding the boiling range. The BioSyn 3 fuel is a synthetic gas oil with a boiling range different from the standard for Jet A1. Due to the composition of the synthetic gas oil, however, despite the higher boiling position, all other specification values of Jet A1 are complied with.
BioSyn 4 synthetic fuel is a broad-cut middle distillate that can be taken directly from the total distillation fraction or mixed with light kerosene and a light gas oil. This fuel BioSyn 4 meets all requirements, with the boiling end is within the allowable limits.
For the sake of completeness, the properties of these biomass synthetic hydrocarbon mixtures have also been compared with the standard requirement profile of vehicle and diesel fuels. It turned out that BioSyn 1 to BioSyn4 meet all the requirements of the relevant EN 590 standard. The fuels according to the invention can therefore also be referred to as universal fuels which are equally suitable for driving aircraft turbines and vehicle diesel engines.
The propellants and fuel mixtures of the invention exemplified in the tables have a cetane number above 51 and are therefore also usable as environmentally friendly diesel fuels. The addition of the usual additives produces diesel fuels with excellent application behavior, which also emit significantly less pollutants than conventional diesel fuels.
In conclusion, the further conclusion is justified that the inventors have identified, in addition to the environmentally friendly aircraft fuel they invented, a fuel which, in the spirit of a universal fuel, simultaneously fulfills all relevant requirements for both aerospace fuels (AFQRJOS) and diesel fuels.
