Definitions
- the present invention generally relates to a box assembly for a roll-up awning, and more particularly to a box comprising a casing provided with means which allow accessing the inside of the casing without the need of disassembling the box for carrying out, for example, several maintenance operations including removing, placing or replacing the canvas of the awning.
- a type of roll-up awning comprising support means adapted to be fixed to a wall or another structure and to rotatably support a rolling tube at their ends is well known.
- a canvas has a rear edge fixed to said rolling tube and a front edge fixed to a load bar.
- Foldable arms are arranged with respective first ends connected to said supports and second ends connected to said load bar.
- Elastic means are arranged to push said foldable arms to an extended position.
- a manual or motor-driven actuation mechanism is arranged to make the rolling tube to rotate in both directions for the purpose of letting out canvas so that the foldable arms pull it to a fully or partially extended position, or to roll up the canvas and thus folding the arms against the force of said elastic means to a fully or partially folded position.
- a roll-up awning of the type described above with a box adapted to house the rolling bar with the canvas rolled thereon and the foldable arms in folded awning situation.
- This box is generally formed from one or more sections having a longitudinal opening for the passage of the canvas and closing plates coupled to the ends of the section or sections.
- the load bar is adapted to close said longitudinal opening in said folded awning situation.
- This type of boxes generally has the drawback of requiring the box to be uninstalled from the mentioned support means and disassembled when an access therein is desired to carry out, for example, several maintenance operations including removing the canvas to wash it, or placing a clean canvas or replacing a used canvas for another canvas.
- Patent document ES-A-2246738 describes a box assembly for an awning of the type described above, in which said casing is formed from two elongated members having respective mutually coupled adjacent first longitudinal edges and respective mutually separated second longitudinal edges defining said longitudinal opening therebetween, and where the two closing plates are fixed to ends of both elongated members by means of fixing elements such as, for example, self-tapping screws coupled in fixing configurations of the sections.
- the two elongated members can be obtained by extrusion, for example from a light metal alloy of from a plastic, and comprise respective first and second longitudinal fixing configurations which provide at the ends of the elongated members the mentioned fixing configurations adapted to receive the coupling of said self-tapping screws.
- the end edges of the first and second elongated members are at least partly fitted in configurations formed in the closing plates.
- An objective of the present invention is to introduce improvements in the box assembly of the mentioned patent document ES-A-2246738 aimed at allowing relative movement of one of the elongated members in relation to the other member for the purpose of providing access to the inside of the box without the need of uninstalling or disassembling it.
- the present invention contributes to attaining the previous and other objectives by providing a box assembly for a roll-up awning, of the type comprising a casing formed from at least first and second elongated members having respective mutually coupled adjacent first longitudinal edges and respective mutually separated second longitudinal edges defining a longitudinal opening therebetween; two closing plates fixed to ends of said first and second elongated members by means first and second fixing elements; a load bar adapted to close said longitudinal opening in a folded awning situation; and support means connected to said closing plates and adapted to support said casing in a wall or another structure.
- the mentioned roll-up awning comprises a canvas with a rear edge fixed to a rolling tube housed in said casing with its ends rotatably supported on the two closing plates, and a front edge fixed to said load bar.
- Foldable arms are arranged with respective first ends connected to the closing plates and second ends connected to the load bar.
- the box of the present invention is characterized in that said first longitudinal edges of the first and second elongated members comprise respective mutually coupling configurations adapted to allow relative movement of the first elongated member in relation to the second elongated member, said relative movement being enough to provide an access to the inside of the casing when said first fixing elements are released while said second fixing elements keep the second elongated member fixed to the closing plates.
- the second elongated member is permanently fixed to the closing plates assuring the structural integrity of the casing, whereas the first elongated member is moved or rotated to provide the mentioned access to the inside of the casing. Furthermore, given that the support means are associated to the lateral closing plates and that the latter do not interfere in the movement of the first elongated member, the mentioned maintenance operations can be carried out without needing to uninstall the box from the support means.
- Said mutually coupling configurations of the first longitudinal edges of the first and second elongated members are preferably adapted to allow rotation of the first elongated member in relation to the second elongated member about a geometric axis parallel to the longitudinal direction of the first longitudinal edges without the need of completely separating the first elongated member from the second elongated member.
- the first elongated member which is preferably arranged in an upper position, thus acts as a cover for the box, which can be easily and comfortably opened and closed by simply releasing and re-coupling the mentioned first fixing elements, which preferably have the form of screws passed through corresponding holes formed in the lateral closing plates and which can be coupled to corresponding first fixing configurations existing at the ends of the first elongated member.
- the end edges of the second elongated member are optionally fitted in configurations formed in the closing plates, whereas the end edges of the first elongated member are simply supported by butt resting in the closing plates, or the configurations formed in the closing plates are arranged such that even though they make contact with the end edges of the first elongated member, they do not interfere with its movements between the closed position and the open position.
- the casing 1 is formed from first and second elongated members 2, 3 together defining an encircling wall. To that end, these first and second elongated members 2, 3 have respective first mutually adjacent and coupled longitudinal edges 2a, 3a and respective second mutually separated longitudinal edges 2b, 3b defining a longitudinal opening 4 therebetween.
- the first and second elongated members 2, 3 have the same length and have at each side of the casing 1 mutually flush ends according to one and the same plane perpendicular to the longitudinal direction of the casing 1.
- a corresponding closing plate 5 fixed to said ends of the first and second elongated members 2 by means of first and second fixing elements 6, 7, such that the two closing plates 5 close the casing 1 on both sides.
- the box comprises support means to support said casing 1 in a wall or another structure.
- these support means comprise side plates 9 connected to said closing plates 5 and adapted to be coupled to anchoring parts 19 fixed to said wall or another structure, according to a well known construction.
- the mentioned rolling tube 11 is housed inside said casing 1 with its ends rotatably supported on the two closing plates 5, and said canvas 10 is passed through the mentioned longitudinal opening 4 of the casing 1.
- the aforementioned load bar 8 is arranged in a front part of the casing 1 and is adapted to close said longitudinal opening 4 when the canvas is in a folded awning situation shown in Figures 1 and 2.
- the roll-up awning comprises a pair of foldable arms 12 articulated in their mid-area (of which arms only an elbow of one of them is visible in the Figures).
- Each of said foldable arms 12 has, as is conventional, a first end connected in an articulated manner to the corresponding closing plate 5 of the casing 1 and a second end connected in an articulated manner to the load bar 8.
- each folding arm 12 An elastic element housed in a hollow inside of each folding arm 12 is arranged to push the folding arm to an extended position.
- a manual or motor-driven actuation mechanism (not shown) is arranged at one of the sides of the box such that it can be activated to make the rolling tube rotate in both directions for the purpose of extending or rolling up the canvas.
- the mentioned first longitudinal edges 2a, 3a of the first and second elongated members 2, 3 comprise respective mutually coupling configurations adapted to allow relative movement of the first elongated member 2 in relation to the second elongated member 3, said relative movement being enough to provide an access to the inside of the casing 1, as shown in Figure 2.
- the mentioned mutually coupling configurations of the first longitudinal edges 2a, 3a of the first and second elongated members 2, 3 are adapted to allow rotation of the first elongated member 2 in relation to the second elongated member 3 about a geometric axis parallel to the longitudinal direction of the first longitudinal edges 2a, 3a.
- the coupling configuration of the first longitudinal edge 2a of the first elongated member 2 comprises a curved longitudinal flange 13 inserted in a complementary curved longitudinal groove 14, complementary to said curved longitudinal flange 13 defined by the coupling configuration of the first longitudinal edge 3a of the second elongated member 3.
- Both the mentioned curved longitudinal flange 13 and said curved longitudinal groove 14 are substantially in the form of cylindrical segments with a central axis in said geometric axis parallel to the longitudinal direction of the first longitudinal edges 2a, 3a, such that the first elongated member 2 can rotate about said geometric axis between a closed position, shown in Figures 1 and 3, and an open position, shown in Figures 2 and 4, providing a closed box situation and an open box situation, respectively.
- Figures 5 and 6 show a reverse exemplary embodiment to that shown in Figures 3 and 4, in which the coupling configuration of the first longitudinal edge 3a of the second elongated member 3 comprises a curved longitudinal flange 15 inserted in a complementary curved longitudinal groove 16 defined by the coupling configuration of the first longitudinal edge 2a of the first elongated member 2.
- Said curved longitudinal flange 15 and said curved longitudinal groove 16 are here also substantially in the form of cylindrical segments with a central axis in said geometric axis parallel to the longitudinal direction of the first longitudinal edges 2a, 3a, such that the first elongated member 2 can rotate about said geometric axis between closed and open positions shown in Figures 5 and 6, respectively.
- the second elongated member 3 is fixed to each of the closing plates 5 by means of two or more of the mentioned second fixing elements 7, whereas the first elongated member 2, in the closed box situation, is only fixed to each of the closing plates by means of one of the corresponding first fixing elements 6 located relatively close to its second longitudinal edge 2b.
- This single first fixing element 6 will preferably be located in an easily accessible position when the box and the awning are installed.
- One of the second fixing elements 7 will also be preferably located close to the first longitudinal edge 3a of the second elongated member 3, as best shown in the exemplary embodiments of Figures 1 to 4, and of Figures 5 and 6, in order to provide a resistant coupling area.
- first and second elongated members 2 and 3 are designed as profiles with a constant cross-section for the purpose of being obtained by extruding a metal alloy, such as an aluminium alloy, or a plastic.
- a metal alloy such as an aluminium alloy, or a plastic.
- Such first and second elongated members 2 and 3 obtained by extrusion can have for example, double-walled sections and comprise respective first and second longitudinal fixing configurations 17, 18 defining, at the ends of the first and second elongated members 2, 3, configurations in the form of longitudinally fluted openings adapted to receive the coupling of the mentioned first and second fixing elements 6, 7, respectively, which in this case are in the form of self-tapping screws passed through corresponding holes 20 formed in the closing plates 5.
- the mentioned curved longitudinal flange 13 or 15 and the corresponding curved longitudinal groove 14 or 16 are also defined by longitudinal configurations extending from one end to the other of the respective first and second elongated members 2, 3.
- the present invention is not limited to elongated members that can be obtained by extrusion and can be implemented using other elongated members obtained by any other shaping technique.
