Claims (37)

  1. An applicator (10) comprising:
    - a support (11) with a longitudinal axis (X), the support comprising:
    - a stem (14); and
    - a deformable portion (17) including a first end (15) and a second end (16), the deformable portion (17) being capable of deforming elastically in a radial direction when a distance between the first (15) and second (16) ends is varied;
    - an adjuster element (13) that is movable at least along the axis (X) relative to the support (11) and that is arranged to adjust the distance between the first (15) and second (16) ends of the deformable portion (17); and
    - an applicator member (12) on the deformable portion between the first (15) and second (16) ends, characterized by the fact that the applicator member (12) is fitted to the deformable portion (17) and extends continuously around the deformable portion.
  2. An applicator according to the preceding claim, characterized by the fact that the adjuster element (13) may be driven by the user by means of a control member (25) located at an end of the applicator member (12).
  3. An applicator according to any preceding claim, characterized by the fact that the adjuster element (13) is turnable relative to the support (11).
  4. An applicator according to any preceding claim, characterized by the fact that the support (11) and the adjuster element (13) cooperate by screw engagement.
  5. An applicator according to any preceding claim, characterized by the fact that the adjuster element (13) comprises a thread (27) suitable for co-operating with a complementary thread provided on the support (11).
  6. An applicator according to the preceding claim, characterized by the fact that the support (11) comprises an internally threaded surface in a region of the first end (15).
  7. An applicator according to any preceding claim, characterized by the fact that the support (11) comprises a handle member (3) and an internally threaded surface in a region of said handle member (3).
  8. An applicator according to claim 1, characterized by the fact that the adjuster element (13) comprises a control member (25) that projects from the support (11).
  9. An applicator according to the preceding claim, characterized by the fact that the control member (25) projects from the support (11) in a region of the second end (16).
  10. An applicator according to claim 9, characterized by the fact that the control member (25) projects from the support (11) in a region of a handle member (3) of the support.
  11. An applicator according to the preceding claim, characterized by the fact that the control member (25) cooperates with the handle member (3).
  12. An applicator according to the preceding claim, characterized by the fact that the control member (25) is configured to be screwed on the handle member (3).
  13. An applicator according to claim 12, characterized by the fact that the control member (25) is snap fitted on the handle member (3).
  14. An applicator according to any one of claims 12 to 14, characterized by the fact that the control member (25) is turnable relative to the handle member (3).
  15. An applicator according to any one of claims 12 to 15, characterized by the fact that the control member (25) is movable relative to the handle member (3) in a direction substantially parallel to a longitudinal axis (X) of the applicator.
  16. An applicator according to any one of claims 12 to 16, characterized by the fact that the adjuster element (13) comprises a stem (29) that is not entirely rotationally symmetrical and is secured in a housing (30) in the control member (25).
  17. An applicator according to any preceding claim, characterized by the fact that the deformable portion (17) comprises at least one longitudinally extending strip (20).
  18. An applicator according to the preceding claim, characterized by the fact that the deformable portion (17) comprises a plurality of strips (20) distributed equally about the longitudinal axis of the support.
  19. An applicator according to either preceding claim, characterized by the fact that, in an unused position, the strips are substantially in a shape of a portion of a cylinder.
  20. An applicator according to any preceding claim, characterized by the fact that the support (11) comprises a shoulder (27) on which the applicator member (12) is arranged to bear when the distance between the first (15) and second (16) ends decreases.
  21. An applicator according to any preceding claim, characterized by the fact that the applicator member (12) is molded as a single piece of an elastically deformable material.
  22. An applicator according to any preceding claim, characterized by the fact that a surface envelope of the applicator member (12), when not deformed, has a cross-section selected from the following list: circular, and polygonal, in particular square or triangular.
  23. An applicator according to either preceding claim, characterized by the fact that a surface envelope of the applicator member (12) has a cross-section that passes through an extremum between axial ends thereof when it is not deformed, in particular a maximum.
  24. An applicator according to claim 1 or claim 2, characterized by the fact that the applicator member (12) comprises a plurality of applicator elements engaged on the support (11), in particular a plurality of disks.
  25. An applicator according to the preceding claim, characterized by the fact that the plurality of disks comprises larger-diameter disks (45) alternating with smaller-diameter disks (46).
  26. An applicator according to claim 25 or claim 26, characterized by the fact that the disks include faces that are flat, tapered, concave, or convex.
  27. An applicator according to any one of claims 25 to 27, characterized by the fact that at least one applicator element, in particular a disk, comprises an elastically deformable spacer means (42) pressing against an adjacent applicator element.
  28. An applicator according to any preceding claim, characterized by the fact that the support (11) and the applicator member (12) are made at least in part out of the same material, in particular an elastomeric material.
  29. An applicator according to any preceding claim, characterized by the fact that the support (11) comprises a handle member (3) at one end of the stem (14).
  30. An applicator according to the preceding claim, characterized by the fact that the handle member (3) comprises a cap for closing a receptacle (2) containing a substance to be applied.
  31. An applicator according to any preceding claim, characterized by the fact that a largest transverse dimension of the applicator member (12) varies by a factor of 1 to 1.25 when the deformable portion passes from a zero deformation state to a maximum deformation state.
  32. An applicator according to any preceding claim, characterized by the fact that the deformable portion (17) is formed monolithically with the stem (14).
  33. A device for packaging and dispensing a substance, in particular a cosmetic, comprising:
    - a receptacle (2) containing a substance (P); and
    - an applicator (10) according to any preceding claim.
  34. A device according to the preceding claim, characterized by the fact that it further comprises a wiper member (5).
  35. A device according to the preceding claim, characterized by the fact that the wiper member (5) has a smallest inside cross-section that is circular in shape.
  36. A device according to any one of claims 34 to 36, characterized by the fact that the substance (P) is a cosmetic, makeup, or a care product, in particular mascara.
  37. A method of applying a substance, in particular a cosmetic, said method comprising, given an applicator comprising:
    - a support comprising:
    - a stem with a longitudinal axis (X) ; and
    - a deformable portion (17) having a first end (15) and a second end (16), the deformable portion (17) being capable of deforming elastically in a radial direction when the distance between the first (15) and second (16) ends is varied;
    - an applicator member (12) fitted to the deformable portion between the first (15) and second (16) ends and extending continuously around the deformable portion; and
    - an adjuster element (13) that is movable relative to the support (11) and that is arranged to adjust the distance between the first (15) and second (16) ends of the deformable portion (17),
    the step consisting in adjusting the adjuster element (13) to bring the applicator member (12) into a predetermined configuration.
