' UNITED STATES i PATENT OFFICE.
`WILLIAM JOHN IVEBB, OF HARBOR AU BOUCHE, NOVA SCOTIA, CANADA.
LAM P-CHIMNEY CLEANER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.3417,671l dated August 17l 1886. Applicatonfled July 14, 1884. Serial No. 137,611. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that l, VILLIAM JOHN VEBB, a citizen of Canada, residing at Harbor au Bouche, in the county of Antigonish, inV the Province of Nova Scotia, Canada, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lamp-Chimney Cleaners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention is an improvement in the class oflai'np-chimney cleaners in which aseries of flat or plate springs are employed to expand a cover of `suitable fabric by which they are inclosed.
The improvement pertains to the construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter" described and clailned. l
In accompanying draWings,'Fignre l is a side View 0l" my improved device. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section, and Fig. 3 is a-transverse section.
The handle A is fixed on one end of the polygonal rod B, and a flanged metal head, C, on the other. A siniilarly-fia1iged piece, C', slides on rod B. The ilat spring-ribs E are secured to these parts C C by means of Wires fitted in grooves, as shown. A cover, F, of coarse fabric is drawn on over the ribs, and the latter are expanded by sliding piece C along rod B. My improvement is chiey embodied in the features I shall now describe.
The inner end of handle A is reduced in diameter and screw-threaded, as shown. An
internallythreaded sleeve, D, Works on this threaded portion in contact with piece C', and
attached to a piece that is free to turn around the rod. Also, the application of the nut D to a threaded part, which is separate from the rod, enables the implement to be produced more easily and cheaply than others of its class, since such construction avoids threading the rod itself, as Well as secures greater compactness in respect to length of the implement.
Vhat I claim is- The fixed handle A, having its inner end reduced and screw-threaded, the internallythreaded sleeve D, which rotates on said handle, the rod B, made polygonal, and the nonrotatable piece C', sliding on the latter, in combination with expansible ribs E, all as shown and described.
Signed at Harbor au Bouche this 27th day of June, 1884;.
VILLIAM JOHN WEBB.
In presence of- MAURICE WEBB, llIIoHAEL V. WEBB.
