Description

The invention relates to an impact-absorbing protective element having at least one air under atmospheric pressure, compressible hollow body in which an overpressure builds up by an impact and which is provided with a device for the sudden reduction of the overpressure upon reaching a limit.

US 3,831,941, US 4,596,106).In order to defuse natural or artificial obstacles on traffic areas, such as ski slopes, toboggan runs, cross-country trails, model car lines, etc., it is known, for example from AT 381 460 B or EP 0 945 154 A, elements made of a suitable foam in flexible sheaths, for example from tarpaulin material to the obstacles. For this purpose also inflated body, which are also arranged in sheaths, fixed to the obstacles (US 3,831,941, US 4,596,106).

An element of the type mentioned for securing race tracks is known from WO 00/47824. This element constitutes a hollow body consisting of an elastically compressible framework and a sheath, in which smaller openings are provided in such a way that air can pass outwards when the hollow body is compressed. The openings may be covered by flaps, which are each held by a Velcro again. An impact allows air to escape through the openings, with a violent impact opening the hook-and-loop fasteners and fully opening the openings. Due to the elasticity of the scaffold, the element resurfaces, with air again entering through the openings. Nevertheless, due to the small cross-section of the openings in the event of a strong impact with high force, the pressure reduction across the openings is much too low, so that the hollow body, in spite of the discharge openings, either has too high an elasticity that can be thrown back or bursting the impacting person or object and destroyed.

According to AT 299 039 B, screed routes can be secured in dangerous sections by safety nets arranged along the edge, in which, in order to reduce the elasticity of the tensioned nets, excess lengths are laid down in net loops which are held together by adhesive closures. In a correspondingly large impact, the adhesive closures open and the network is longer. Part of the impact energy is used to open the adhesive closures.

The invention has now set itself the task of forming an air under atmospheric pressure containing hollow body as an impact-damping protective element, the springback effect is greatly reduced in a violent impact.

According to the invention this is now achieved in that the device at least one intended for bursting, recoverable. Having connection between separable wall parts of the hollow body. This compound is formed in cuboidal hollow bodies, in particular along at least one edge.

The protective element according to the invention thus has a certain elasticity in the event of a weak or low impact, as a result of which weak return spring forces become effective. However, if the impact is more severe, so that the resulting overpressure exceeds the predetermined limit, the device according to the invention becomes effective and the overpressure abruptly and completely degraded, without the hollow body becoming unusable.

For the split-open connection between the wall parts, in particular, a hook-and-loop fastener whose adhesive force determines the predetermined limit is suitable, wherein the limit value can be determined by selecting the width and the length of the hook-and-loop strips.

In a further embodiment, for example, push-button closures can be provided for the bursting connection.

In both cases, the connection is abruptly released by the internal pressure and achieved a direct complete pressure equalization.

In a cuboid hollow body such closures are conceivable, for example, at all edges, so that the hollow body disintegrates into six individual plates.

To restore the hollow body, the six plates are put back together. The hollow body, disassembled by the impact but not destroyed, is restored and ready for use within a very short time.

A bursting connection at all edges of the cuboid hollow body is generally not required. For most applications, it is sufficient when a lid-like wall part opens on one or both sides, so that the closure elements are arranged only on three edges. At all other edges, the wall parts are firmly connected, for which in particular glued or welded foil strips are suitable. The film strips can form a joint along the fourth edge in the case of the pop-up lids, with the individual wall parts not being thrown off. This is particularly beneficial on ski slopes, where they could slide down a slope.

The hollow body can be formed in a further preferred embodiment of a flat element, so that storage and transport of the hollow body are much easier. Thus, a cuboid hollow body of six hinged by five film strips wall parts can be unfolded, which are then fixed to the contacting edges of the wall parts by the bursting connections.

The hollow body can of course also have any other suitable geometric shape.

In order not to unnecessarily cause the bursting of the connection at a low impact, it is provided in a further preferred embodiment that the hollow body has at least one discharge opening which at least delays the achievement of the limit value. The relief opening must be low in the passage cross section to avoid overpressure build up inside the To allow hollow body. In particular, it is therefore provided that the discharge opening is formed by a grid-like wall region in a wall portion of the hollow body.

A further preferred embodiment of the invention provides that the hollow body has two separate chambers, for which different criteria for overpressure reduction are defined. In such a hollow body is depending on the strength of the impact either only in a chamber, for which a lower limit applies, or reduced in both chambers of the pressure, or equal limits are achieved with a time delay.

These different criteria can be achieved by various measures in a simple manner. Thus, one chamber may have a relief opening and the second chamber may not. Furthermore, different relief openings can be formed in both chambers, for example by varying the mesh sizes or sizes of the grid-like wall regions. A third possibility, for example, is that the lengths and widths of the Velcro strip are different, so that the adhesive forces are uneven. It is of course also conceivable that the hollow body has more than two chambers.

A hollow body according to the invention can be connected to other similar hollow bodies and joined together to form a larger impact damping element, wherein, for example, each hollow body has an opening lid. For this, preferably connecting means are provided on the outside of the hollow body, e.g. also velcro strips, provided. Likewise, with the aid of such connecting means fastening elements for fixing to an obstacle or on the ground can be connected to the hollow body. On visible outer surfaces of the hollow body, in particular a plurality of juxtaposed hollow body advertising elements or the like can be further secured by means of further connecting means.

A protective element for obstacles of all kinds in the area of a traffic area as well as for delineating the traffic area against dangerous secondary areas has a hollow body 1, the interior of which contains air under normal pressure. The interior can be closed to the environment, as shown in FIG. 1, but can also be flow-connected to the environment through an opening, for example through a grid-like wall region 10, as shown in FIGS. 6 and 10.

The hollow body 1 is in particular composed of individual wall parts 2, 3, which consist, for example, in each case of a foamed polyethylene plate 4 provided on both sides with an airtight coating 5. The wall parts 2, 3 are hingedly connected at least along some edges by means of film strips 7, wherein they are preferably unfolded from a flat element and fixed in the spatial form.

A hollow body 1 according to FIGS. 1 to 4 is cuboid and has four lateral wall parts 2 and two cover-like wall parts, of which at least the upper wall part 3 is hingedly connected along one edge to a wall part 2. Along the three other edges Velcro strips 8, 9 are arranged, which keep closed the lid-like wall part 3 with a certain holding force. On the outer sides, as shown in FIG. 5, further Velcro strips can be provided as connecting elements 6 for lining up a plurality of hollow bodies 1.

In the second embodiment according to FIGS. 6 and 7, the hollow body 1 has a cover-like wall part 3 in which a relief opening in the form of a lattice-like wall region 10 is provided. These hollow bodies can also be strung together by means of Velcro strips 6, for example, as FIG. 7 shows. The protective element constructed from ten hollow bodies 1 in FIG. 7 has further Connecting means, in particular also in the form of Velcro strips on which soft plates 11, for example, can be fixed for advertising. At the bottom of each plate 11, a snow grille 12 is provided for use on ski slopes.

As already mentioned, the air in the interior of the hollow body 1 is at atmospheric pressure, so that in a weak impact, an elastic damping takes place, wherein in the embodiment of FIG. 6, a portion of the air is forced through the grid openings to the outside. Exceeds due to a strong impact of building up in the interior of the hollow body 1 pressure a predetermined extent, the pressure is abruptly reduced by the jump from the Velcro strips 8, 9 held lid 3. After the pressure reduction, the hollow body 1 can be brought back into its usable state by closing the lid or by returning the tabs.

Fig. 8 shows a further embodiment in which the hollow body 1 has two mutually separated by a central wall chambers 13, each of which, similar to FIG. 6 by a lattice-like wall portion 10, 16 containing cover-like wall part 3 is closed, again along the outer edges Velcro strips 8, 9 are arranged. The grid-like wall regions 10, 16 have different passage cross-sections, resulting from different grid sizes or mesh sizes. In this protective element a graded impact attenuation is given because the lid-like wall part 3 of that chamber 13, the grating region 16 detects a larger passage cross-section, later or not at all opens. Likewise, the adhesive forces of the Velcro strips 8, 9 of the two wall parts 3 may be different.

Claims (10)

  1. An impact-damping protection element having at least one compressible hollow body which contains air under atmospheric pressure and in which an increased pressure is built up due to an impact and which is provided with a device for abruptly reducing the increased pressure when a limit value is reached, characterised in that the device has at least one connection which is intended to burst open and which is restorable between wall portions (2, 3) of the hollow body (1), which can be separated from each other.
  2. A protection element according to claim 1 characterised in that the connection is provided along at least one edge of the hollow body (1).
  3. A protection element according to claim 1 or claim 2 characterised in that a hook-and-loop fastener (8, 9) is provided as the connection between the wall portions (2, 3) which can be separated from each other.
  4. A protection element according to claim 1 or claim 2 characterised in that a press stud fastener is provided as the connection between the wall portions (2, 3) which can be separated from each other.
  5. A protection element according to one of claims 1 to 4 characterised in that the hollow body (1) has at least one relief opening which at least delays the attainment of the limit value.
  6. A protection element according to claim 5 characterised in that the relief opening is formed by a mesh-like wall region (10, 16) in a wall portion (2, 3) of the hollow body (1).
  7. A protection element according to one of claims 1 to 6 characterised in that the hollow body (2) has two chambers (13) which are separated from each other and for which different criteria are defined for the reduction in increased pressure.
  8. A protection element according to one of claims 1 to 7 characterised in that the hollow body (1) has wall portions (2, 3) which are hingedly connected together and it can be unfolded from a flat condition.
  9. A protection element according to claim 2 and claim 8 characterised in that the restorable connections intended for bursting open are provided along the edges which are not hingedly connected of the unfolded hollow body (1).
  10. A protection element according to one of claims I to 8 characterised in that each wall portion (2, 3) comprises a panel (4) of foamed polyethylene, which is airtightly coated on both sides.
