Die gelenkige Verbindung von Quer- und Längsführung ist insofern notwendig, als damit die Möglichkeit einer geringfügigen Verschiebung der Räumkette relativ zum Gleis besteht. Damit kann in räumlich z.B. durch einen Bahnsteig eingeschränkten Abschnitten besser gearbeitet werden. Außerdem ermöglicht die Gelenkverbindung eine Verlängerung der Querführung zum Reinigen eines Weichenabschnittes.
