The present invention relates to a vise grip, comprising
  • a fixed assembly comprising at a front end a fixed jaw and at a rear end a fixed handle,
  • a movable assembly comprising at a front end a movable jaw, mounted on the fixed assembly by means of a pivot, and at a rear end a movable handle,
  • a toggle bearing at a rear point on the fixed assembly and at a front point on the movable jaw, and actuable by the movable handle, and
  • at least one light receiving the pivot and comprising several positioning notches of the latter.

Clamps of this type (see for example FR-A-2288589) allow to exercise for a long time duration, without operator intervention, a large clamping force on a object, or more frequently on two objects to be assembled.

The clamping force is obtained by slightly crossing the alignment of the toggle joint by adjusting the elasticity of the parts of the vice grip.

The multi-notch light provides a range of opening of the larger jaw than in vise grips where the first pivot has a position single fixed.

In practice, an operator ensures a rough preset of the opening jaws by positioning the first pivot in a selected notch, the fine adjustment being ensured by changing the position of the rear knee support point the along the fixed handle, for example by means of a screw.

Typically, multi-notch pliers have four or five notches for adjusting the position of the first pivot.

We notice in practice that it is difficult to position the first pivot in a selected notch. Thus, the operation for presetting the opening of the bit is delicate and always requires the use of both hands of the operator.

The invention aims to solve these problems by providing a vise grips of the aforementioned type and whose presetting of the opening of the jaws is more easier and faster.

To this end, the subject of the invention is a vise grip of the aforementioned type, characterized in that said light comprises only two notches, namely a first notch and a second notch in which the pivot can pass from the first notch, by pivoting in a first direction of the moving crew around of the rear knee support point on the fixed equipment, when applying an effort tending to bring the handles of the vice grip closer while the knee pad is freely in substantially aligned position.

The invention will be better understood on reading the description which follows, given only by way of example, and made with reference to the appended drawings, in which:
  • FIG. 1 is a schematic plan view of a vise grip according to the invention, the first pivot being positioned in the upper notch,
  • FIG. 2 is a plan view, partial and enlarged, illustrating the release of the first pivot from the upper notch,
  • FIG. 3 is a view similar to FIG. 1 illustrating the first pivot in an intermediate position between the upper notch and the lower notch,
  • Figure 4 is a view similar to Figure 1 illustrating the first pivot engaged in the lower notch.

Stationary equipment 2 is rigid and has a generally elongated shape with a distal or front end part 4 constituting a fixed jaw, a part proximal or rear 5 constituting a fixed handle, and an intermediate part 6 link.

The intermediate part 6 has a U-shaped cross section and has thus two side yokes 7 of which only one is visible in FIG. 1.

The moving equipment 3 essentially comprises:
  • a movable jaw 9 of generally triangular shape, the upper rear vertex of which is articulated to the connecting part 6 by a first pivot 10,
  • an actuating lever 12, the front end of which is connected by a second pivot 13 to the lower rear apex of the movable jaw 9 and the rear end of which forms a movable handle 14, and
  • an arm 15 whose front end is articulated at an intermediate point of the lever 12 by a third pivot 16, and whose rear end is supported at 17 on the front end of a screw 18, which is received in a thread of the fixed handle 5 to adjust the position of the fulcrum 17 along the fixed handle 5.

The rear end of the arm 15 can pivot at 17 against the end front of the screw 18, so that the arm 15 forms a connecting rod.

The connecting rod 15 and the part of the lever 12 which extends between the second pivot 13 and the third pivot 16 form in known manner a toggle 20, which is supported in 17 on the fixed assembly 2 and by the second pivot 13 on the jaw movable 9, and which can be actuated by the movable handle 14.

The moving element 3 further comprises a trigger 21 of release by breaking of the toggle joint 20, in the form of an auxiliary lever articulated on lever 12 and one front end of which is intended to bear on an eccentric part 22 of the connecting rod 15.

A helical tension spring 24 extends between the fixed handle 5 and the lower rear vertex of the movable jaw 9, to recall jaws 4 and 9 in open position.

Pivot 10 is fitted into the upper rear vertex of the jaw mobile 9 and its ends are received in identical lights 26 arranged opposite each other in each flange 7 of the connecting part 6 of the fixed crew 2.

The lights 26 have a general shape in the heart, of which the two lobes, oriented towards the front of the vise grip 1, form an upper notch 27 and a notch lower 28.

La surface de rampe 30 est orientée vers le cran inférieur 28 et la surface de rampe 31 est orientée vers le cran supérieur 27.As illustrated in more detail in FIG. 2, for each light 26, the upper notch 27 is partially delimited by a lower ramp surface 30 convex, while the lower notch 28 is partially delimited by a surface of upper ramp 31 concave. The ramp surfaces 30 and 31, on the one hand, are join at the front of the light 26 by forming a point 32 directed towards the rear, and on the other hand, are connected to the rear of the light 26 by a surface concave 33 regular. The average lines L1 and L2 of surfaces 30 and 31 form an angle a of about 90 ° therebetween. The ramp surface 30 is oriented towards the lower notch 28 and the ramp surface 31 is oriented towards the upper notch 27.

A helical compression spring 36 is supported by its rear end on the fixed assembly 2, and by its front end on the pivot 10 via a stirrup 37. The stirrup 37 encloses the upper rear apex of the movable jaw 9 and is crossed by the pivot 10. The spring 36 is notably more powerful than the traction spring 24.

In FIG. 1, the pivot 10 is positioned in the upper notch 27 which corresponds to a smaller opening of jaws 4 and 9.

Le levier 12 et la bielle 15 se comportent alors comme un ensemble monobloc tendant à pivoter autour du point 17 d'appui de la bielle 15 sur l'équipage fixe 2.If the operator wishes to position the pivot 10 in the lower notch 28, it exerts with one hand on the handles 5 and 14 an approximation effort of these. No object to be clamped being present between jaws 4 and 9, the knee brace 20 then freely takes up its substantially aligned position shown in Figure 1, i.e. without elastic deformation of the parts constituting the toggle joint 20. The lever 12 and the connecting rod 15 then behave as a one-piece assembly tending to pivot around the fulcrum 17 of the connecting rod 15 on the fixed crew 2.

The pivot 10 then tends to move downward relative to the moving assembly 2 and bears on the ramp surfaces 30 of the notches 27. These surfaces 30 then exert a reaction force on the pivot 10, one of which component R (figure 2) is directed towards the rear of the vice grip.

Thus, the pivot 10 then emerges from the bottom of the notch 27 under the effect of the component R which opposes the action of the compression spring 36.

The pivot 10 thus travels down the ramp surface 30 down to what it reaches the tip 32 as shown in FIG. 3.

Then, the pivot 10, which always tends to move away from the bottom of the moving part 2, leaves the ramp surface 30 and is pushed back by the spring 36 against the ramp surface 31 which guides the pivot 10 to the bottom of the notch 28.

The operator can therefore change the pivot 10 from notch 27 to notch 28 by simply tightening the handles 5 and 14 with one hand.

To pass the first pivot 10 from the lower notch 28 to the notch upper 27, it suffices to exercise between the connecting part 6 and the front part of the lever 12, and in particular perpendicular to pivot 10, an effort tending to closer. The pivot 10 then tends to move upwards and the surface of ramp 31 ensures the release of the pivot 10 of the notch 28 against the action of the spring 36, until the pivot 10 reaches the point 32, after which the spring of compression 36 brings back the pivot 10 at the bottom of the upper notch 27.

The operator can ensure the transition from notch 28 to notch 27 while taking the vise grip with one hand which grips the connecting part 6 of the crew fixed 2 and the actuating lever 12 in the vicinity of the movable jaw 9.

A first hand is then placed at the level of handles 5 and 14 while the other hand exerts the approximation effort in the vicinity of jaws 4 and 9

Thus, the operator can pass the pivot 10 of the notch 27 to notch 28 and vice versa, only by changing the position of his hand along the fixed 2 and mobile 3 crews.

Presetting the opening of jaws 4 and 9 is therefore particularly easy. It only requires a slight spacing between the jaws.

Fine adjustment of this opening and application of a clamping force on, for example, two objects to be assembled, are carried out in a conventional manner.

It should be noted, however, that due to the presence of only two notches 27 and 28 for adjusting the position of the first pivot 10, all positions of this first pivot 10 are stable and allow the vise grip to have a satisfactory clamping capacity.

It will be noted that the surface 33 limits the movement of the pivot 10 and the lets pass freely. However, the surface 33 can be adapted to serve guide surface of the pivot 10 during its passage from one notch to another.
