Abstract

There is proposed a transfer foil which makes it possible for decorative layer arrangements as are known from hot stamping foils to be transferred onto a substrate without a high level of material expenditure. For that purpose the carrier film of a hot stamping foil is fixedly joined by means of a permanent adhesive to the base foil.

Description

The invention relates to transfer films for the application of a at least one lacquer layer and a heat-activatable adhesive layer are formed Decorative layer arrangement on a substrate according to the preamble of claim 1 and with a process for their production.

Securing documents is becoming increasingly important The term "documents" does not only include identification papers, securities or the like For example, banknotes, checks, credit cards, etc. are also counted. at Documents of value, e.g. Banknotes are very common security elements used, which are formed by a decorative layer arrangement, for example Diffractive-optical or holographically effective structures. Next to it but also certain graphic designs are provided as security elements his. In the case of documents with a large circulation, the Security elements very often by means of a transfer film, for example one Hot stamping foil, the decorative layer arrangement forming the security element usually at least one layer of paint and one layer of a includes heat-activated adhesive that connects the actual Lacquer layer representing security element or arrangement of lacquer layers with the substrate, for example a bank note, a check, an identification paper or a credit card.

In most cases, the security element is transferred to the Document machine. In this case, the processing of transfer foils prepares mostly so-called hot stamping foils, few problems if the machines are trained accordingly.

The decorative layer arrangements of hot stamping foils have only one small thickness. They essentially consist of only a few layers of paint. This small thickness of the security elements has the advantage that when the Security elements only arranged in a certain area of the document there are no fundamental differences in thickness in the document. Such differences in thickness could make stacking problematic. On Another advantage of using decorative layer arrangements of several Lacquer layers as security elements is that such layer arrangements are not mechanically very stable. Therefore, when trying to use a security element deducting from the document, it is almost certain to assume that the Security element from the various layers of paint is destroyed, so that the Counterfeiting or attempted counterfeiting can be easily identified.

The use of hot stamping foils for attaching security elements However, documents has the disadvantage that there is always a corresponding machine The effort must be made because the application of hot stamping foil decorative layers practical as security elements on substrates by hand is excluded, because of the very small thickness of the Decorative layer arrangement of a hot stamping foil. This means that for certain Previously, the use of hot stamping foils as a security element eliminates because the required mechanical effort in no reasonable Relationship to the result achieved.

In certain cases it would still be very beneficial if a security element could be customized before being applied to a document. This Possibility is particularly desirable for personal documents. Then it could a security element can be used, which is attached to the Document with personal data of the holder of the document, for example a photo, name or birthday etc. has been individualized. This possibility eliminated in practice if using a known hot stamping foil Security elements are transferred to a document, especially This is because the individual printing of security elements based on Hot stamping foils are always available in large numbers because of the required In turn, effort is eliminated if only a few, accordingly individualized security elements are required. For example, it is the case that Always very few security elements for ID cards, passports etc. with personal data are required. Often one of these is enough Element, which is then part of the ID card or passport becomes.

Heat transferable labels are known from US Pat. No. 5,932,319. Here is the Formed such that on a carrier film, for example in the form of a Paper web, a wax release layer is present. On this wax release layer are then successively a protective lacquer layer, a Decorative lacquer layer and an adhesive applied. When transferring the label from Carrier film softens the wax layer due to the action of heat, so that the Decorative layer then made of protective lacquer layer, decorative lacquer and adhesive easily from that Loosen the paper carrier and transfer it to the substrate to be decorated. DE 30 22 744 C2 discloses a transfer film according to the preamble of Claim 1 known, in which one with a carrier for the decorative layer arrangement Plastic film laminated paper web is provided. You get one Transfer film, which has relatively great stability, because instead of the previously for hot stamping foils, a relatively thin carrier film is a combination of Base film (paper web) and backing film is present, which provides the necessary stability has to clean the transfer film even without expensive machinery to be able to handle. In use, the user places one Transfer film with the side on which the marking represents Decorative layer arrangement with the adhesive is provided on a textile Subject on. It is then affected by the appropriate pressure and heat the decorative layer arrangement is connected to the object and then the paper web laminated with the carrier film from the decorative layer arrangement deducted, which remains on the substrate.

The invention is based on the object of creating a transfer film, by means of which a security or decorative element can be transferred, the the structure of the decorative layer arrangement is basically one in itself known hot stamping foil corresponds, the application of the Decorative layer arrangement on the substrate, for example a document, too should be possible without extensive mechanical equipment.

According to the invention, a transfer film is used to achieve this object proposed, which has the features of claim 1.

According to the invention, a transfer film is thus proposed in which the Base film siliconized from a surface facing away from the carrier film Paper web is formed, with its siliconized surface on a carrier film, e.g. releasably adheres to a backing paper. In this case, for example several small security elements on a common sheet, namely the Carrier film can be arranged. A security element is then used consisting of base film, carrier film and decorative layer arrangement from the carrier film solved and transferred accordingly to the intended substrate.

This transfer of individual elements can thereby advantageously be facilitated be that the base film with the carrier film and the decorative layer arrangement in a plurality of label-like individual elements is divided, with several such individual elements arranged on a carrier film web removable from this are. The division is expediently such that the individual elements by Punching or perforation of the base film, carrier film and decorative layer arrangement are formed along their intended peripheral edges, the carrier film not is divided.

A particularly advantageous embodiment of the transfer film according to the Invention is designed such that the decorative layer arrangement is transparent and which serves to fix the decorative layer arrangement on the substrate Adhesive layer by means of a printer, for example a laser or Thermal printer, is printable. With such a transfer film for example, by printing the adhesive layer Individualization done. It is e.g. conceivable that the personal data side of a passport containing a transfer sheet gem. to secure the invention, the basic information already in the factory production of the transfer film in a corresponding Printing process, e.g. between individual layers of the Decorative layer arrangement can be attached while the personal data, e.g. Name, first name, address, date of birth and picture of the passport holder on the transfer film before using it Adhesive layer can be printed using a suitable printer. After this individualizing printing, the transfer film is then printed with the Adhesive layer placed on the substrate and by heat and optionally Pressure attached to the substrate. This embodiment has the advantage that the individualizing information through the decorative layer arrangement of the Transfer film are covered, i.e. a change is not possible without at the same time damage the decorative layer arrangement. If you try that Subtract the decorative layer arrangement from the substrate in order to customize the Changing data can be expected to destroy the decorative layer arrangement become. In addition, it can normally be assumed that the find individualizing data also on the substrate, because with the usual Processing conditions of the transfer film according to the invention at least a certain proportion of the printing ink present on the adhesive layer is also present connects directly to the substrate.

A further improvement of the transfer film acc. the invention in the sense of a Securing is possible according to the invention in that the decorative layer arrangement at least one on a surface with an optical diffraction and / or holographically effective structure provided replication lacquer layer. such Diffraction-optical or holographically effective structures are in themselves of Hot stamping foil decorative layer arrangements formed security elements generally known and therefore do not need to be explained in more detail.

With the previous security elements it is now often the case that the diffraction-optical or holographically effective structure is covered by a reflective layer, generally a vapor-deposited metal layer, and is therefore more visible in incident light. According to the invention, it is preferred that the diffraction-optical and / or holographically effective structure carries a transparent layer of a material whose refractive index is significantly higher than that of the transparent replication lacquer layer. With such a design, sufficient visibility of the optically effective structure is obtained. At the same time, however, the decorative layer arrangement remains transparent, so that the substrate and any markings provided between the substrate and the decorative layer arrangement can still be seen, for example a print on the adhesive layer of the decorative layer arrangement. The material layer which increases the visibility of the optically active structure is expediently produced by providing, for example, vapor deposition, a layer of ZnS, TiO 2 , SiO or a material which is similar in terms of refraction.

It is further provided according to the invention that the heat-activated, for Fixing to the substrate serving adhesive layer formed by two layers of adhesive between which a mark created in a printing process is arranged is, the marking can advantageously be formed by printing inks that are only recognizable when illuminated with light of predetermined wavelength ranges. If one speaks of two "adhesive layers", it is not at all required that the two layers of adhesive are assembled and assembled in the same way are. Rather, it is thought in particular of the case that - of the carrier film Seen here - the first layer of adhesive is an adhesion promoter layer, which ensures that the Adhesion to the evaporated, the visibility of the diffractive structure improving layer is particularly good. It would also be conceivable that there is only one layer of adhesive, then in the printing process generated marking directly on the structure-improving visibility Layer should be present.

According to the requirements of the user, the layer sequence of the Decoration layer arrangement vary, usually first one Hot stamping foil made with appropriate layers and this hot stamping foil then laminated together with the base film. For connecting the carrier film The hot stamping foil with the base foil must of course be used in this case Glue used at the temperatures required for the application of the Decorative layer arrangement can be applied to the substrate, its Adhesive strength is not reduced and the secure cohesion of the base film and Carrier film guaranteed.

A particularly useful embodiment of a transfer film acc. The invention is characterized in that it comprises the following constituent parts or layers:
  • a carrier paper web,
  • a sheet of silicone paper, which is releasably adhered to the backing paper sheet with its siliconized surface,
  • a carrier film which is bonded to the non-siliconized surface of the silicone paper web by means of a permanent adhesive, the carrier film having successive layers on its free surface
  • a release layer - only available if necessary,
  • a transparent replication lacquer layer on its surface facing away from the carrier film and having the diffraction-optical and / or holographically effective structure,
  • a layer of material that is highly refractive in comparison to the replication lacquer layer, covering the structure at least in regions,
  • a heat-activated adhesive layer as well
  • optionally a second heat-activatable adhesive layer and a printed marking between the two heat-activatable adhesive layers, wherein
  • the replication lacquer layer, the layer made of highly refractive material and the heat-activatable adhesive layer (s) are transparent and the adhesive layer forming the surface of the transfer film facing away from the carrier film web is formed by a material which can be printed by means of a printer.

The transfer film of the training explained above fulfills the above demands made in an excellent manner. It offers the possibility of one comparatively thin, previously only transferable by means of hot stamping foil Decorative layer arrangement on a substrate without great mechanical effort to install. At the same time, the transfer film according to the invention can be easily handle and it is easily possible to use different, by means of one Transfer film security elements formed according to the invention customizable to print.

Further features, details and advantages of the invention result from the following description of a preferred embodiment of a Transfer film based on the drawing.

The transfer film according to Figure 1 includes - in the drawing from above below - a carrier film 1, on which by means of a suitable adhesive 2 is relatively light a base film 3 is releasably attached. The base film 3 is using a Permanent adhesive 4 with the carrier film 5 of a total of 6, basically built in a known manner hot stamping foil firmly and under the usual processing conditions inextricably linked.

The hot stamping film 6 consists on the one hand of the carrier film 5 and on the other hand of the altogether designated 7 decorative layer arrangement, which in itself from the Processing of hot stamping foils in a conventional manner and removable from the carrier film 5 can be transferred to a substrate 8 shown in FIG. 3.

In the exemplary embodiment shown, the following layers are arranged on the side of the carrier film remote from the base film 3
  • a release layer 9,
  • a protective lacquer layer 10,
  • a replication lacquer layer 11, which, as indicated schematically in the drawing, is to be provided with a diffraction-optical or holographically effective structure 12,
  • a layer 13 made of a material that has a refractive index that differs significantly from the refractive index of the replication lacquer layer 11,
  • an adhesion promoter or first adhesive layer 14
  • and a second adhesive layer 15, which serves to connect the decorative layer arrangement 7 to the substrate 8.

From Figure 1 it can be seen that the different layers of the transfer film through Punchings or perforations 16 are divided in this way, for example to form label-like individual elements 17. The punchings or perforations 16 However, do not grasp the carrier film 1. It is therefore a larger one Bow in front, which has a plurality of individual elements 17, which are also correspondingly individual can be removed from the carrier film 1, which by appropriate Design of the separating surface indicated by arrow a between base film 3 and Adhesive 2 or by appropriate selection of the adhesive 2 can be facilitated.

The drawings also show that in the area of the interface 18 between the adhesion promoter or first adhesive layer 14 and the second Adhesive layer 15 markings 19 are present. These marks will be preferably applied in a printing process and suitably consist of a varnish or a printing ink that is only special when illuminated with light Wavelength, e.g. is visible when illuminated with UV light. Requirement for the Visibility of the markings 19 goes without saying that the different Layers 10, 11, 13, 14 and 15 of the decorative layer arrangement 7 accordingly are transparent.

While FIG. 1 shows a transfer film, such as that used in retail can be located and which the respective consumer uses to the individual Applying label-like elements 17 to a substrate is only one in FIG shown label-like individual element 17, in which - in addition to the Embodiment of Figure 1 - the second adhesive layer 15 with individualizing Information, for example with information about the identity of a card holder, too Pictures. For this purpose, the adhesive layer is 15, as at 20 indicated, printed accordingly. The print can be done with usual Printing devices, e.g. by means of thermal transfer printing, laser printing, etc. It it can be assumed that despite the partial printing at 20 the Adhesive layer 15 adheres sufficiently firmly to the substrate, provided that only the thickness of the Adhesive layer 15 is large enough and there is sufficient area left in the not printed adhesive directly to the surface 21 of the substrate 8, for example an ID card or the like. If 20 small to generate the pressure Particles can be used, even an almost full-surface printing take place, since then the adhesive of the layer 15 accordingly between the individual Particles can pass through.

The application of the transfer film according to the illustrated embodiment now takes place as follows:
Generally, the pressure 20 is first applied to the free surface of the adhesive layer 15. This can easily be done, for example, by using a paper web in standard format as the carrier film, which can then be inserted into commercially available printers which produce the desired print (20) on the free surface of the adhesive layer 15.

After printing, at least one label-like individual element 17 of the carrier film 1, e.g. a backing paper. This is very easy possible if silicone paper is used as the base film, which is on the for Adhesive layer 2 facing surface 22 is siliconized, while the other, with the surface connected to the carrier film 5 has no coating and therefore adheres well.

The correspondingly printed individual element 17 detached from the carrier film 1 is then placed on a substrate and, preferably with a correspondingly elevated one Temperature of about 130 ° C, pressed against the surface 21 of the substrate.

This connects the adhesive layer 15 and consequently the entire layer Decorative layer arrangement 7 fixed to the surface 21 of the substrate 8. Simultaneously softens the release layer 9 so that it is easily possible to the carrier film 5 and with this base film 3 of which is firmly connected by means of the permanent adhesive layer 4 subtract from the decorative layer arrangement.

Then only that remains on the substrate, for example a document 8 corresponding thin, known decorative layer arrangements of hot stamping foils Decorative layer arrangement 7, e.g. can form a security element.

In FIG. 3, a representation was chosen in which the decorative layer arrangement 7 only covers a region of the surface 21 of the substrate 8. Of course it would be also possible, for example in the case of passports or the like, the size of the label-like Select individual elements 17 so that they match the size of the substrate match, for example the size of a page of a passport or the size of an identity card.

The individual layers can, for example, be selected as follows or be composed:

A backing paper is preferably used as the backing film, paper with a weight per unit area of about 35 to 150 g / m 2 advantageously being used.

Grundfolie 3Base film 3

The base film 3 is also a label known reinforcement layer. For example, a plastic film can be used become. However, preference is given to using a silicone paper as the base film 3, wherein the siliconized surface 22 over a known for this purpose common pressure sensitive adhesive is connected to the carrier film 1.

Permanentkleber 4Permanent adhesive 4

The permanent adhesive 4 has the task of ensuring that the base film 3 and Backing film 5 also remain firmly connected to one another when for transmission heat is used to transfer the transfer film to the substrate. These conditions generally meet common, permanently adhering acrylic dispersion adhesives.

The carrier films usual for hot stamping foils are used here, whereby sensibly plastic films are used that have a very smooth surface do not have the transparency of the decorative layer arrangement 7 through To affect surface irregularities. In the multitude of cases 5 polyester films with a thickness of around 20µm can be used as carrier film In the present case, thinner carrier films 5 can also be used after yes the carrier film 5 is reinforced by the base film 3 during handling.

The release layer 9 is generally applied over the entire area in a layer thickness of approximately 0.01 to 0.2 μm. For example, it can be composed as follows: toluene 995 g Ester wax (dropping point: 90 ° C) 5 g.

Schutzlackschicht 10Protective lacquer layer 10

The protective lacquer layer 10 is also generally applied over the entire surface, specifically in a layer thickness of 0.5 to 5.0 μm, preferably of 1 to 2 μm. The protective lacquer layer 10 can be composed as follows: MEK 400 g toluene 150 g cyclohexanone 200 g Cellulose nitrate (low viscosity, 65 percent in alcohol) 140 g Methyl methacrylate (d = 1.17 g / m 3 , sp / c = 40-50 cm 3 / g) 100 g

Replizierlackschicht 11Replication lacquer layer 11

Sie kann folgende Zusammensetzung aufweisen: Cyclohexanon 200 g Methylmetacrylat (d = 1,17 g/m3, Fp > 130°C) 12 g Polyvinylchlorid Terpolymer (Tg = 90°C) 5 g Ethylacetat 200 g The replication lacquer layer 11 can be applied over the entire area, but also only in regions, specifically if, for example, provision should be made to provide the holographically or diffraction-optically effective structure 12 only in regions. The layer thickness of the replication lacquer layer 11 is 0.05-1.5 μm. It can have the following composition: cyclohexanone 200 g Methyl methacrylate (d = 1.17 g / m 3 , mp> 130 ° C) 12 g Polyvinyl chloride terpolymer (Tg = 90 ° C) 5 g ethyl acetate 200 g

Struktur 12Structure 12

Structure 12 may be a well known one for so called OVDs act usual diffractive optic or holographically effective structure, for example around a lattice structure, the optical properties of the structure 12 by the corresponding structural parameters, for example grating frequency, Grid depth, grid inclination, etc. can be determined. The structure 12 is generally in a replication process in the replication lacquer layer 11 during the manufacture of the Hot stamping foil 6 introduced.

HRI (hochreflektierende) Schicht 13HRI (highly reflective) layer 13

The task of the highly reflective layer 13 is to improve the visibility the diffraction-optical or holographically effective structure 12, whereby, as a Viewing Figure 3 reveals, at the same time it must be ensured that the Viewers can see through the layer 13 to the markings 19 and to recognize the pressure 20.

This task can be, for example, a vapor-deposited, high-index layer of a Meet thicknesses of 10 to 500 nm, for example metal oxides, metal sulfides, Titanium dioxide etc. can fulfill this task.

Kleberschichten 14 und 15Adhesive layers 14 and 15

As already mentioned, it is possible to remove the two layers 14 and 15 from the to produce the same transparent material. But it would also be conceivable that Layer 14 only as an adhesion promoter layer between the adhesive layer 15 and the Provide coating 13 of structure 12.

Die Kleberschichten können wie folgt zusammengesetzt sein: MEK 250 g Toluol 340 g Vinylchlorid-Vinylacetat Copolymer (Fp: 80°C) 120 g Thermoplastisches Polyurethan (d=1,18 g/cm3) 165 g Kieselsäure, hydrophobiert (Partikelgröße ca. 10µm) 60 g In the exemplary embodiment, it is assumed that two identical adhesive layers are used, which are formed over the entire surface and have a layer thickness of 2 to 10 μm, preferably 3 to 6 μm. The adhesive layers can be composed as follows: MEK 250 g toluene 340 g Vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate copolymer (mp: 80 ° C) 120 g Thermoplastic polyurethane (d = 1.18 g / cm 3 ) 165 g Silicic acid, hydrophobized (particle size approx. 10 µm) 60 g

Markierungen 19Markings 19

The markings 19 are preferably elements applied in a printing process after the application of the first adhesive layer, for example special graphic elements, a font - visible only under certain viewing conditions - etc. In the exemplary embodiment it is assumed that the markings 19 start from one Decorative varnish that responds to UV light is formed, which can be composed as follows: MEK 2000 g butyl 600 g cyclohexanone 200 g Methyl methacrylate (d = 1.15 g / m 3 , TG = 50 ° C) 200 g PVC / PVAC interpolymer (softening point: 90 ° C) 500 g Methyl methacrylate (d = 1.16 g / m 3 , n sp / c = 40-50 cm 3 / g) 130 g diacetone 100 g high molecular dispersion additive 80 g Luminance pigment (organic / inorganic) 125 g

Druck 20Pressure 20

The pressure 20 applied to the free surface of the adhesive layer 15 becomes as already mentioned, generated by means of common printing processes, e.g. with the help of Laser printers, thermal transfer printers etc. It would even be theoretically conceivable instead of applying a print 20 by hand to add further markings. Laser or Thermal transfer printing is preferred, however, because in this case it is due to the Fixing the transfer film on the substrate 8 under the influence of heat it can be assumed that the pressure-generating particles also at least partially adhere directly to the substrate 8. If such a case is attempted then the To remove the decorative layer arrangement 7 from the substrate 8, it is to be expected that at least remnants of the print 20 used for identification also so directly on Substrate 8 adhere that there is a detachment of the decorative layer arrangement 7 without traces cannot be reached.

The transfer film is usually produced in such a way that first a hot stamping foil 6 according to the usual methods, that is essentially by means of Printing process, produced and this hot stamping film 6 then with an adhesive bond consisting of the carrier film 1 and the base film 3 by means of the permanent adhesive 4 is firmly connected, for example by a lamination process known per se.
