Claims (8)
- Control unit (1) installed by the roadside for verifying the correct operation of toll devices (2) installed in vehicles, each of which toll devices is fitted with equipment for communicating (3) by mobile telephony and for establishing (4) its own geographical position, such as GPS,
with a communications device (5) which, in the same way as the toll devices (2) in the vehicles, likewise has equipment (6) for establishing its geographical position,
and with a camera (7) for producing photographs of passing vehicles (9) for the preservation of evidence, wherein the control unit (1)communicates in each case with the communications equipment (3) of passing vehicles (9),carries out an identification of each toll device (2) installed in a vehicle, reads out stored toll data and current position indication data from the toll device (2),checks the toll data and position indication data for plausibility,establishes, on the basis of the read-out position indication data such as GPS, the precise location of each vehicle (9) being monitored, and stores it in a memory unit (11),and, for vehicles for which the verification process has not produced confirmation of the correct operation of the toll device (2), takes and stores a photograph of the number plate (10) of each vehicle (9),
characterised in that
the control unit (1) transmits information about the control procedure to the toll device (2) for storage and
in that the control unit (1), when verifying the plausibility of the toll data and current position indication data, refers to data which it requests from a computer centre (8). - Control unit as in claim 1,

the position of the vehicle (9) that is being monitored is established by taking into account correction data such as GPS. - Control unit as in one of claims 1 to 2,
characterised in that
communications between the toll devices (2) installed in vehicles and the control unit (1) are effected by means of GSM mobile telephony in a GSM microcell. - Control unit as in one of claims 1 to 2,
characterised in that
communications between the toll devices (2) installed in vehicles and the control unit (1) are effected by means of radio transmission at a frequency of 2.45 GHz, i.e. Bluetooth, or at a frequency of 5.8 GHz, i.e. DSRC. - Control unit as in one of claims 1 to 4,
characterised in that
the control unit (1) is set to communicate with a computer centre (8), which carries out the calculation of the toll amounts on the basis of data transmitted from the toll devices (2) to the computer centre (8). - Control unit as in one of claims 1 to 5,
characterised in that
the control unit regularly takes and stores photographs of the vehicles (9) being monitored, and deletes the stored photographs in each case when the monitoring of the relevant toll device (2) reveals that its operation is correct. - Control unit as in one of claims 1 to 6,
characterised in that
the control unit (1) is set to automatically evaluate, by means of optical character recognition, each number plate that has been photographed. - Control unit as in one of claims 1 to 7,
characterised in that
the control unit (1) is in the form of a mobile or portable device.
