Description

  • The present invention concerns a device for handling and emptying the contents of containers for waste collection.
  • The motor vehicles usually used for handling and emptying the contents of these containers are provided with:
    • a body to contain the refuses with relative compactor and a hopper for waste emptying,
    • a container coupling device,
    • means for lifting the container above the body of the vehicle and
    • means for tilting it in order to empty the refuses contained in it.
  • The known means for lifting the container consist in a guiding frame associated to a wall of the vehicle, made of two parallel guides on which slides a carriage associated to the coupling means of the container.
  • It is also known that in order to reach and couple a container at a certain distance from the vehicle, it is necessary for the guide lifting the container to pass from a substantially parallel to an inclined configuration with respect to the wall of the vehicle.
  • The US5049026 patent discloses a system in which the upper part of the guiding frame presents a curved part for tilting the container and emptying the body of the vehicle.
  • A first pair of inclinable arms is articulated with the upper part of the guiding frame; these arms are articulated with the frame of the vehicle. The inclination of the first two arms is obtained by means of a hydraulic actuator fixed to the frame of the vehicle. A second pair of arms, having a inclined portion, are articulated with one end to the upper end of the guiding frame and with the other end to the frame of the vehicle.
  • For their articulation with the frame of the vehicle as well as with the guiding frame, the guiding frame undergoes an angular movement proportional to the movement of the arms given by the activation of the hydraulic actuator.
  • The angular movement makes sure that the guiding structure moves away from the vehicle with a certain inclination.
  • The complexities of the system and the size of its components implies high costs.
  • Moreover, if this system allows the coupling of a waste container placed away from the vehicle, it also requires for the guiding frame to be placed in the initial position, i.e. parallel to the wall of the vehicle, for what concerns the emptying of the container's contents in the body of the vehicle.
  • This requirement is due to the fact that when the guiding frame moves away from the side of the vehicle so does its upper curved part: the position reached by the latter is such that the emptying point of the container does not correspond to the opening of the body. In order to bring the container back to its initial position, after emptying, the guiding frame has to be moved in the opposite direction.
  • This involves the problem to lengthen the time of execution of the container's loading/unloading operation as well as a greater wear of the articulated joints and so on.
  • The US5702225 patent discloses a system in which the guiding frame is articulated with the upper part of the vehicle. Each arm of the guiding frame is connected, substantially in a point towards the lower part of the arm, to a linearly sliding rod inside of a guide placed under the body of the vehicle. Their linear movement, controlled by a hydraulic actuator, determines the inclination of the guiding frame, which is accompanied by a vertical movement of the fixing means connected to it. The implementation of these translation means, characterised by a first part fixed to the wall of the vehicle and a second part articulated with the guiding frame sliding vertically in the first part, is complex and expensive.
  • This system requires also that the means allowing the inclination of the guiding frame, like the sliding rods, be obtained with a sturdy frame in such a way as to bear and counter the weight of the full container that rest on the guiding frame, with material and implementation high costs. Moreover, given the frictions between the rod and the guide due to the weight of the rod, of the guiding frame and of the full container, it is necessary for the actuators of the linear movement to be properly dimensioned, or for the rods to slide on the bearings; anyway, with additional costs.
  • The Italian patent application TO95A000462 also discloses a device for the inclination of the guide that is used for lifting the container in which the guiding frame is hinged on the upper end to an oscillating part articulated with the vehicle. In this case, the inclination of the guiding frame is due by a sliding rod made substantially of a structural steel with square section, which slides linearly inside a guide present in the bottom of the body. The rod is connected to an intermediate point between the two side guides of the guiding frame, substantially towards the lower part of the guides, and its linear movement, controlled by means of the actuators, determines the inclination of the guiding frame
  • The shifting of the guiding frame, given by the linear movement of the rod, determines an oscillating movement downwards of the oscillating part articulated with the vehicle, creating in this way a horizontal translation movement of the guiding frame. In this way, it is possible to reach containers positioned farther from the vehicle without increasing the inclination of the guiding frame.
  • Also in this case, more than the previous one, exists the same problem of the dimensioning of the rod. In fact, since the oscillating part to which the guiding frame is connected can oscillate freely, it does not help the rod to bear the weight of the container when the latter exceeds the point connecting the rod to the guiding frame when ascending.
  • The oscillating part shall oppose only a tensile strength when the container is positioned under the point connecting the rod to the guiding frame during its lifting.
  • Moreover, in this solution the lower end of the guiding frame, when is in an inclined position, shall be at a greater distance from the ground with respect to the one given by the position substantially parallel to the wall.
  • In fact the sliding rod that imparts the inclination movement to the guiding frame shifts horizontally without any oscillating movement, by making the end of the guide to make a circular line upwards when shifting.
  • For this reason it is necessary to have a longer guiding frame in order to avoid that the coupling device, in its limit stop position at the lower end of the inclined guiding frame, from resulting higher than the coupling devices present on the container, with ensuing coupling problems.
  • The IT01262500 patent also discloses a device for the inclination of the guide used for lifting of the container in which the upper part of the guiding frame is hinged to the vehicle near the hopper, in a fixed position, and presents a hydraulic actuator that controls the inclination of the guiding frame, which is articulated on one side near the lower part of the guiding frame and on the other side to the vehicle.
  • Also in this case the lower end of the guiding frame, when in an inclined position, shall be at a greater distance from the ground with respect to the one given by the position substantially parallel to the wall of the vehicle.
  • For this reason it is necessary to have a longer guiding frame in order to avoid the coupling device, in its limit stop position at the lower end of the inclined guiding frame, from resulting higher than the coupling devices present on the container, with ensuing coupling problems.
  • Moreover, in order to couple containers away from the vehicle, the coupling device must be provided with very long gripping arms in order to be able to compensate the high degree of inclination of the guiding frame required in similar conditions. Since the guiding frame is fixed to the upper part of the vehicle and since it cannot also translate downwards, in order to move away from the vehicle it should incline more.
  • The greater length of the gripping arms does not allow the structure to couple the containers too near the side edge of the vehicle, very important operation in order to prevent the vehicle from moving too near the centre-line of the road. Moreover, due to the length of the gripping arms, especially when these arms have gripped the container, high flexure moments are caused due to the distance between the load supported overhanging by the carriage and the rotation axis of the gripping arms, which can be bucked by realising the device with a complex frame.
  • The present invention has the aim of indicating a device for handling and emptying the contents of containers for waste collection, which has not the drawbacks of the know state of the art, but has operating advantages and is easy to use.
  • A further aim of the present invention is to indicate a device for handling and emptying the contents of containers for waste collection, with which it is possible to reach containers positioned away from the vehicle without increasing the inclination of the guiding frame.
  • A further aim of the present invention is to indicate a device in which the supporting means of the container can be easily and economically implemented.
  • A further aim of the present invention is to indicate a device in which the coupling means of the container are at the same place with respect to the level of the ground whether the guiding frame is in the position parallel to the vehicle or in the inclined position.
  • A further aim of the present invention is to indicate a device in which the lower end of the guiding frame maintains the same position with respect to the level of the ground whether the guiding frame is in the position parallel to the vehicle or in the inclined position.
  • In order to achieve such aims, it is the object of the present invention a device for handling and emptying the contents of containers for waste collection, incorporating the features of the annexed claims, which form an integral part of the present description.
  • Further objects and advantages of the present invention will become apparent from the following detailed description and annexed drawings, which are supplied by way of non-limiting example, wherein:

    • Figg. 5 and 6 show schematically a partially cutaway upper view of a vehicle for waste collection, comprising the device according to the invention, during the phases for handling of a waste container, in the conditions in which the container is near or far from the vehicle respectively,
    • Figg. 7 and 8 show schematically a partially cutaway rear view of a vehicle for waste collection with the handling device in a first and in a second loading position of the container respectively according to a first variant of the present invention,
    • Figs. 9 and 10 show schematically a partially cutaway rear view of a vehicle for waste collection with the handling device in a first and in a second loading position of the container respectively according to a second variant of the present invention,
    • Fig. 11 shows schematically a partially cutaway rear view of a vehicle for waste collection with the handling device in different loading positions of the container according to the invention.
  • With reference to figures from 1 to 6, number 1 indicates a vehicle for waste collection, comprising a body 2 in which the contents of the waste containers C are emptied, a device 3 for handling the container C associated to a side wall 4 of the vehicle 1.
  • The body 2 presents an opening 5 for emptying inside it the contents of the waste containers.
  • The device 3 comprises a guiding frame 6, which is obtained by two parallel uprights and integral between them indicated with number 7 and whose upper ends are indicated with 7A and lower ends with 7B. The upper end 7A of the uprights 7 is articulated with an end 8A of an inclined section 8C of an oscillating bulkhead 8. The oscillating bulkhead 8 is articulated by means of its opposite end 8B with the end of a bracket 9. This articulation with bracket 9 allows a circular movement of the oscillating bulkhead 8. With A is indicated the lengthwise axis of the oscillating bulkhead 8.
  • The bracket 9 is fixed and integral with the part of the sidewall 4, placed under the oscillating bulkhead 8, and the frame of vehicle 1.
  • A carriage 10 is present between the uprights 7 of guiding frame 6: this carriage, by means of known systems, can slide between the said uprights 7 from a lower to a higher position with respect to such guiding frame.
  • Number 11 indicates a hydraulic actuator articulated with one end of the frame of the vehicle, under the body 2, and the other end is articulated with a bracket 12 present in an intermediate point between the two uprights 7 of the guiding frame 6, in a point nearer to the lower end 7B.
  • The activation of the actuator 11 determines an inclination towards the external part of the vehicle of the lower end of the guiding frame 6 in order to approach it to the container. The shift of guiding frame 6, given by the linear movement of the actuator 11, also determines a downward circular movement of the oscillating bulkhead 8, since it is articulated with the guiding frame 6; the circular movement of bulkhead 8 creates in this way also a horizontal translation movement of the guiding frame 6. In this way, it is possible to reach containers positioned more away from the vehicle without increasing the inclination of the guiding frame.
  • Moreover, since the actuator 11 is free to assume an inclined position because it is articulated at its ends, the position of the lower end 7B of the guiding frame 6, when in an inclined position, is at the same distance from the ground with respect to that deriving from the position substantially parallel to the wall of the vehicle.
  • For this reason the coupling device, in its limit stop position at the lower end of the inclined guiding frame, is in the same position as with guiding frame 6 in vertical condition next to the vehicle, removing the adaptation problems for coupling the container. Moreover, the implementation of a longer guiding frame is not necessary to compensate the variation of height from the ground, between its vertical and inclined position, given by known devices.
  • In a point near the upper end 7A of each upright 7, externally, is articulated an end of a rod 13, which the lengthwise axis is indicated with A1, whose other end is articulated with the bracket 9, in a point placed below the one in which the oscillating bulkhead 8 is articulated (the figures show only one of the two rods 13, being the other one fixed symmetrically and externally as to the other upright 7). This articulation allows to the rod 13 to make a circular movement.
  • The end of the rod 13 articulated with upright 7, presents an appendix 14.
  • The function of the rod 13 is to support the guiding frame when, in inclined position is handling the waste container C and to bear with the co-operation of the oscillating bulkhead 8 the weight of the container as described later.
  • By means of rods 13, articulated between the bracket 9 and the guiding frame 6, and with the oscillating bulkhead 8, a parallelogram is obtained which allows guiding frame 6, when moving away from wall 4 of the vehicle, to undergo an angular movement proportional with respect to the oscillating bulkhead 8 following the extension of the actuator 11, associated to the guiding frame 6 and to the vehicle 1.
  • That is to say, the lengthwise axes A and A1, of the oscillating bulkhead 8 and of the rods 13 respectively, move in a circular way substantially parallel to each other, whatever the size of the movement.
  • When the waste container C is lifted with a gripping device and then translated along the guiding frame 6 by means of the carriage 10, it exerts a downwards force, equal to its weight, on the guiding frame. This force tends to make guiding frame 6 return until it reaches the vertical position.
  • However this movement is prevented by the actuator 11, which preventing the return of the guiding frame 6, creates a combination of the direction of the forces that operate on the rod 13 as well as on the mobile bulkhead 8 in order to support container C.
  • In fact, on the rod 13 is present a force F operating at compression along the length of the rod 13, while on the oscillating bulkhead 8 operates a tensile force F1, in the opposite direction as to force F operating on the rod 13, given by the weight of the container that encumbers on guiding frame 6.
  • The guiding frame 6 can be considered as an arm of a lever with fulcrum on oscillating bulkhead 8, and the connecting point of the rod 13 is the point where the force keeping the system balanced is applied.
  • Therefore, the weight of the container, operating on the guiding frame 6, is countered by the two opposite forces F and F1 allowing guiding frame 6 to remain in the position determined by the actuator 11.
  • Moreover, the weight of the container shall not rest on the actuator 11, whose will be only the function to incline the guiding frame 6, in order to approach it to the container that must be coupled for emptying, and counter the forces that cause guiding frame 6 to return to the vertical position; therefore its size shall be adapted to such a function.
  • Number 15 indicates a coupling device of the container C, associated to the carriage 10. The coupling device has two gripping arms 16 that can rotate, by means of hydraulic actuators, around an axis perpendicular to the shifting axis of carriage 10, for emptying the contents of the container inside the body of the vehicle for waste collection.
  • The gripping arms 16 at rest, i.e. when guiding frame 6 is positioned next to the vehicle and the latter moves to pick up or empty another container, are positioned vertically parallel to guiding frame 6 (Fig. 11).
  • The coupling device with the corresponding arms and actuators is not described since it is known.
  • In order to operate the device, the vehicle is placed near the container, with respect to the moving direction. The vehicle shall be positioned, with respect to the container to be emptied, by means of the known systems like a telecamera placed on the vehicle.
  • For what concerns the detection of the distance of the container from the vehicle, it is obtained for example by means of ultrasound sensors.
  • If the container is at close position, the handling occurs as indicated in Fig. 5, i.e. with the device next to the wall.
  • If the container is not at close position, by means of actuator 11 the guiding frame 6 is moved outside the vehicle in order to approach its lower end to the container, as shown in Fig. 6.
  • The container is grabbed by the coupling device 15 by means of arms 16. By means of the carriage 10, sliding in the guiding frame 6, to which is associated the coupling device 15, the container is lifted until it reaches a position at the top of the guiding frame 6.
  • At this point the rotation of the arms 15 allows to turn over the container for emptying its contents in the body 2.
  • The arms 16 shall be provided with means known for to hold the container when it is turned as well as for the opening of the cover of the container.
  • It is clear that the coupling device shall be suitable for the type of container that must be picked up.
  • The reverse must be carried out to reposition the container on the ground.
  • The configuration of the frame 6, in function of the distance of the container C with respect to the vehicle 1, shall remain constant during all the container C coupling operation, emptying its contents in the body 2 and its repositioning on the ground.
  • All the operation of positioning of the vehicle with respect to the container, coupling, shifting and emptying the container, occurs automatically by means of a computerised system controlled by the driver inside the cab of the vehicle.
  • This system detects the positioning parameters of the vehicle in the moving direction with respect to the container, the distance between the vehicle and the container and the positioning of the coupling device in the container.
  • This computerised system is not described since it is known.
  • Fig. 11 shows schematically some positions that can assume the device according to the positioning of the waste container C.
  • As noticed from the figure, the shifting and inclination movement of the lower end of the guiding frame 6, represented with dotted lines, occurs in a rectilinear way substantially parallel to the road surface.
  • For this reason, whatever is the position of the guiding frame 6 with respect to the vehicle, the position of the coupling device 15 of the container C should not change since it will always be at the same height compared to the road surface.
  • Therefore the need to have a longer guiding frame in order to compensate the variation in height from the ground level of its lower end given by the type of implementation of the inclination movement from the devices according to the known art, is not necessary according to the present invention.
  • As deduced from the description, the device for handling and emptying the contents of containers for waste collection is obtained in a simple and economical way.
  • The representation in the figures of the positioning of the device on a side wall of the vehicle's body is merely by way of indication and not binding since the device can be positioned on the vehicle in the position that is best for the function to be carried out, for example on the other side wall or behind.
  • The characteristics of the device for handling and emptying the contents of containers for waste collection, are clear from the description made and from the annexed drawings.
  • From the above description the advantages of the device for handling and emptying the contents of containers for waste collection, are also clear, according to the present invention.
  • In particular they consist in the fact that:
    • the device is obtained in simple and economical way,
    • the support of the guiding frame does not need big-sized and very strong rods,
    • the movement for the inclination of the guiding frame occurs by means of a simple hydraulic actuator,
    • a longer guiding frame is not required to compensate the variation of height from the ground of the coupling device, between a near and far position from the vehicle,
    • it is not necessary for the coupling device to be oriented in function of the position of the guiding frame,
    • it is not necessary for the gripping arms of the container to be longer,
    • it is not necessary to change the configuration of the guiding frame for emptying the contents of the container inside the body of the vehicle.
  • It is obvious that many changes and applications are easily possible for the man skilled in the art, to the device for handling and emptying the contents of containers for waste collection, described as an example, without departing from the novelty spirit of the inventive idea.
  • For example, in order to shift the guiding frame instead of using a hydraulic actuator articulated with one end in a point substantially towards the lower end of the guiding frame and on the opposite side under the body of the vehicle, a pair of smaller actuators can be used, articulated in different points as shown in figures 7-8 an 9-10 described below.
  • With reference to figures 7 and 8, which represent a partially cutaway rear view of a vehicle for waste collection with the handling device in the first and in the second loading position of the container respectively, according to the first variant of the present invention, with 3A is indicates the device.
  • The details present in the figures and that are interested by this variant are indicated below with the same reference. Number 6 indicates the guiding frame, 7 indicates the two parallel and integral uprights. The upper end 7A of uprights 7 is articulated with an end 8A of the inclined section 8C of the oscillating bulkhead 8.
  • One end of an hydraulic actuator 18 is articulated with appendix 14 of each rod 13 (only one is visible in the figure); the other end of the hydraulic actuator 18 is articulated with the bracket 9, on the same axis with which oscillating bulkhead 8 is articulated.
  • The two hydraulic actuators 18 replace the actuator 11 positioned under the body of the vehicle.
  • The inclination and lowering of the guiding frame 6 are given by the activation of the two hydraulic actuators 18, which by means of rods 13 operate on uprights 7 by pushing them out of the vehicle.
  • The function of the device 3A is the same as that of the device 3 since all the forces involved are always distributed on oscillating bulkhead 8 as well as on rod 13, since the function of the hydraulic actuators 18 is merely to handle the guiding frame and counter the movement of return to the vertical position of the guiding frame, given by the weight of the container but not to support the container.
  • With reference to figures 9 and 10, which represent a partially cutaway rear view of a vehicle for waste collection with the handling device in a first and in a second loading position of the container respectively according to the second variant of the present invention, with 3B is indicated the device.
  • Also in this case, the details present in the figures and that are interested by this variant are indicated below with the same reference. Number 6 indicates the guiding frame, 7 indicates the two parallel and integral uprights. Upper end 7A of the uprights 7 is articulated with the end 8'A of an inclined section 8'C of an oscillating bulkhead 8'. The other end 8'B of the oscillating bulkhead 8' is articulated with the bracket 9.
  • Reference 19 indicates two hydraulic actuators (of which only one is visible in the figure because the second one is positioned symmetrically on the opposite side), one end of each is articulated with a corresponding bracket 20 integral with the oscillating bulkhead 8'; the other end of each actuator 19 is articulated with the bracket 9.
  • The two hydraulic actuators 19 replace the actuator 11 positioned under the body of the vehicle.
  • The inclination of the guiding frame 6 is given by the activation of the two hydraulic actuators 19, which operate on the oscillating bulkhead 8' by causing a circular downwards movement of its end articulated with the guiding frame 6.
  • In this way, since the guiding frame 6 is articulated with the rods 13, the guiding frame is moved away from the vehicle, it is lowered and it is inclined.
  • The function of the device 3B is the same as that of the devices 3 and 3A since all the forces involved are always distributed on the oscillating bulkhead 8' as well as on the rod 13, since the function of the hydraulic actuators 19 is merely to handle the guiding frame and counter the movement of return to the vertical position of the guiding frame, given by the weight of the container but not to support the container.
  • It is obvious that many other changes and applications are easily possible for the man skilled in the art to the device for handling and emptying the contents of containers for waste collection, described as an example, as it is also clear that in practical actuation of the invention the components may often differ in form and size from the ones described and be replaced with technical equivalent elements.
