Abstract
Description
Escalator steps are typically made by a cast or extrusion press process. The step plates are preformed with a step pattern on the step pallet top and riser. In general, the treads in the form of a series of parallel, extending from the front to the back of the plate grooves are formed. Furthermore, the grooves are sized for engagement with comb structures on the stair landing parts of the escalator.
Since the escalator steps are constantly in motion relative to the escalator sides or the balustrade, demarcation means are normally provided on the steps to facilitate the safe use of the escalators. The demarcation tools provide a visual aid that allows the user to better see the sides and risers leading edge of the step. As a rule, the demarcation means comprise a color mark which contrasts with the other parts of the step. The demarcation means may also form a physical barrier to the side edges of the step by being slightly raised from the step level of the step surface.
Current methods of attaching demarcation means to an escalator step edge include painting an appropriate strip on the step surface, attaching a demarcation strip to the surface of a step rim through the use of screws, nuts, bolts or rivets, or preforming a delineation set stage as part of the casting - or extrusion step in the production of the stage.
The use of painted strips requires constant maintenance as the markings wear out in the course of use. The attachment of a demarcation strip with screws, rivets and the like on the step surface leads to concentrated mechanical stresses in the area of the attachment points and often to a premature failure. The integration of demarcation strips as part of the actual stage prevents replacement and increases manufacturing costs considerably.
Accordingly, it is an object of the present invention to provide a new and improved demarcation strip for use on escalator steps which can be easily replaced as needed.
Another purpose of the present invention is to provide a demarcation strip that is easy to attach and replace at the step and that does not generate localized forces that can lead to premature failure.
Yet another purpose of the present invention is to provide an escalator step configured to receive interchangeable demarcation strips having the above features.
In accordance with the foregoing and other objects and objectives, the demarcation strip according to the present invention comprises an insert which can be attached to an escalator step by assembling corresponding portions of the step and insert to form a friction and / or interference locking arrangement. The escalator step is formed by recessed edge portions adapted to receive the insert, whereby the insert serves as the respective edge of the step. The demarcation strip may be formed in separate riser and tread parts which, upon attachment to the step, join together to provide increased rigidity and stability.
