Abstract

A foil web is fed between a pair of rolls, each having the same truncated, square pyramidal toothed surface pattern. Either one or both of the rolls may be driven, and the free relative axial play between the rolls should be at least 0.5-0.75 times the engaging tooth width. The truncation of the teeth should be 5-25% of the theoretical pyramid height.

Description

The present invention relates to a device for calendering a film according to the preamble of claim 1 and a method of operating the device according to the preamble of claim 7. Such a device is described in US-A-5 598 774, wherein the movable suspension of one of the roll axes a synchronization of both rolls allowed. About the arrangement and design of the teeth nothing is disclosed in this document.

From US-A-5 007 271 a device for calendering a film is known, in which the pyramidal teeth have a square outline, the sides being aligned parallel to the roll axes and circumferentially around the teeth of the one roll Half a tooth width offset from the teeth of the other roller. This known satining was based on the problem despite the relatively fine teeth of the calendering both a high quality of satinization and in particular to achieve a mutual synchronization of the calender rolls in the sense that only one of the rollers is driven and the other roller entrains. It had been found that the required conditions can not be easily met if both rolls were provided identically with hardened teeth, in order to also achieve attractive service lives of the rolls.

In order to meet the requirement of the mutual synchronization of the calendering rollers, the rollers were aligned so that the circumferentially extending rows of teeth of the two rollers lie in the same plane, whereby the teeth are in the engaging region of the rollers against each flank against each other, so to speak inevitable Entrainment of the freely rotating roller is achieved by the driven roller.

The mentioned arrangement or mutual alignment of the calendering rollers has proved successful as long as the films to be calendered, in particular packaging films, consisted predominantly of aluminum. Recently, however, films are increasingly in use or even prescribed, which consist mainly of paper. These films are substantially stiffer than aluminum foils, and it has been found that the known calendering rollers no longer meet the requirements, because the higher paper content leads to the tendency of the film to deform after being calendered, e.g. to curl up, increases sharply.

From GB-A-2 311 949 is known to satin flexible packaging material, wherein the rollers are arranged such that one tooth of a roller comes to rest between four teeth of the other waltz, but wherein the teeth are arranged obliquely to the roll axis and Thus, a locking of the rollers is necessary by this helical toothing.

An arrangement of the generic type results from an obvious previous use made by the applicant before the priority date. In this case, the pyramidal teeth are pointed at the upper end apart from the edge refraction. To satinize packaging films, the rollers must be pressed against each other, resulting in wear of the teeth.

These are arranged obliquely to the roll axis and have a shape emanating from a truncated pyramid, wherein the corners of the top surfaces are removed triangular.

The embossing rollers cooperating therewith have radial projections. These are arranged obliquely to the roll axis and have flat top surfaces with rounded transitions to the side edges, which in turn have a convex Abwicklerkonfiguration.

Starting from this known prior art, it is an object of the present invention to provide a device that meets the new requirements, d. H. which makes it possible to optimally satinize any type of film, the film should after the calendering deform so little that a smooth further processing is possible. This object is solved by the independent claim 1.

The dependent claims describe particular features of an embodiment.

The solution according to claim 1 is a combination of partially known measures, which together allow a very precise processing without significant deformation of very problematic films and not only a stable mutual entrainment and synchronization of the roll rotation, but also an optimal satinization regardless of the guaranteed to satin material.

For the basic structure of the calendering is on the above-mentioned US Patent No. 5,007,271. A foil strip is carried out between two toothed calendering rollers, one of which is fixedly mounted and driven, while the other is freely rotatably mounted on an axle and can be pressed by spring force, pneumatic or otherwise yielding with adjustable pressure against the driven roller.

Both Satinierwalzen have a similar surface toothing, which is shown schematically in Figure 1 in settlement. These are pyramidal teeth which are arranged in the circumferential direction or by the direction of rotation indicated by the arrow and in the axial direction at right angles to it in rows. As mentioned, Figure 1 is a schematic representation, d. H. The pyramidal teeth are depicted as having the exact geometric shape of a pyramid with a sharp point. Thus, the teeth were also formed in the mentioned known embodiment.

What is new is that, according to FIGS. 2 to 5, the tooth tips are flattened, i. H. the teeth are shortened by an amount ΔA (FIG. 3), whereby in practice this reduction amounts to 5% to 25% of the theoretical geometric tooth height. In addition, the edges of the truncated pyramidal teeth are broken, which can be done, for example, that after the machining of the teeth reworking by general material removal, for example by etching or galvanic removal, carried out such that mainly takes place at the tooth edges a removal.

Another difference from the known design, where the mutual axial position of the calender rolls was predetermined, is that the rolls are mutually displaceable with a relative axial clearance of at least one-half tooth pitch, preferably 0.75 times the tooth pitch can move to a stable position, as will be explained.

When the calendering rolls are brought together and pressed against each other for the first time during startup with the foil strip interposed, there is a high probability that the mutual tooth position of the rolls enters their engagement region according to FIGS. 2 and 3. Figure 2 shows the mutual tooth position seen in the circumferential direction, Figure 3 shows the mutual tooth position seen in the axial direction. In this case, the teeth are according to Figure 3 with their flanks on each other, which results in a mutual engagement height E H1 .

Since the calender rolls are rotated, there is a tendency for mutual axial displacement, and if the mutual support of the teeth of the two rolls on tooth flanks is eliminated, the rolls or their teeth penetrate deeper into each other, resulting in a lower engagement height E H2 . This mutual tooth position is shown in Figures 4 and 5, again showing the figure 4, the mutual tooth position in the circumferential direction and Figure 5 shows the mutual tooth position in the axial direction. It can be seen that now the teeth mesh with each other so that each tooth is symmetrical between four teeth of the other roller, the teeth thus touching edges of the edges, and because the edges of the teeth are broken and the tooth tips are flattened, there is a settling or snapping the Gears in a deeper, stable engagement position, from which they experience not emerge. The gears are thus dynamically self-stabilizing in a very specific position. The self-stabilizing effect is aided by the film passed between the calender rolls, as shown in FIG.

When the two embossing rollers engage in any position, the medium to be embossed is pressed around the structural edges K1, K2. This creates a paper tension that creates the forces F1 and F2 on the free-running embossing roller. Thus, the displacement of this embossing roll from the astable position according to Figure 6 in the stable position with maximum penetration depth according to Figures 4 and 5 is favored. As mentioned, considerable force is required to mutually displace the rollers from their mutual stabilized position of maximum engagement in the axial direction or circumferential direction. It is thus guaranteed a safe, stable entrainment of the free-running roller with constant mutual tooth position in the respective engagement area. At the same time, this ensures optimum satinization, especially of paper foils. In the initial engagement position, the teeth could also rest against each other in the axial direction on the flanks, in which case a relative movement would take place in the circumferential direction for engagement in the stable engagement position.

In the two figures, the tooth tips of a roller with triangles, the tooth tips of the other roller are indicated by circles. The dashed lines are the relevant refractive lines, and it is found that the embossing length is significantly longer in the tooth position according to the invention than in conventional tooth position, and the film nerves are not only stress-neutral but also broken in a symmetrical diagonal direction.

For a reliable operation, however, certain minimum conditions must be met. Thus, the elasticity of the metallized paper with embossing according to the invention according to FIG. 7 can also dynamically compensate for a certain pitch error .DELTA.T of the two embossing rollers by virtue of its elasticity. This can be expressed in such a way that if the pitch difference ΔT becomes greater than a certain self-centering factor S ZF , an embossing according to the invention is no longer possible. The embossed picture changes in any case disadvantageous, because the self-centering or -synchronisierung is not guaranteed. In the following relationships mean:

which means that self-centering is guaranteed. The above dimensions are all given in mm.

The preferred embodiment described above is characterized by simplicity, reliability, long service life of the rollers, good satinization regardless of the film material and ease of use. In this embodiment, the tooth shape described, which causes the dynamic engagement of the rolling teeth in the stable, preferred mutual tooth position, advantageous. However, it is also possible variants.

The rollers can be formed with different or equal teeth, d. that is, the tooth pitch must of course be within the limits given above, but the flattening may vary. Preferably, at a different tooth height, the non-driven, free-running roller is provided with lower teeth, it will wear out a little faster, but can be replaced more easily than the driven roller.

The rollers may also be provided with means for pre- or Groborientierung, z. B. with a coarse toothing on the edge of the roll or laterally of the rollers which intermesh when merging the rollers during operation recording and roughly preorient the rollers and thus the correct mesh and subsequent final transfer of the rollers support in the stable position. In this case, the orientation means must have enough play to allow the free mutual movement of the rollers in the stable position.

It is also possible to lock the mutual roller position after reaching the stable engagement position and thus eliminate any risk of jumping the rollers from one stable position to another. Thus, the axial position of the freely co-rotating roller could be fixed after reaching the stable position by clamping the previously axially movable roller shaft, and a backlash-free transmission between the two rollers are engaged, which was previously uncoupled. Accordingly, it would finally be conceivable that the rollers are aligned from the outset by backlash-free gear or arrangement so that a mutual intervention in the sense of the invention is predetermined.

Claims (8)

  1. Device for embossing a packaging foil, comprising a pair of embossing rolls having a toothing of the same kind, which are connected to a drive and capable of being driven individually or in common, the rolls being capable of being pressed against each other in a resilient manner and the pyramidal teeth of the toothing, whose edges are broken, with a rectangular ground plan are disposed in such a manner that the sides are parallel resp. perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the rolls in order to obtain a self-stabilising operating condition in which the rolls are movable relative to each other and capable of being displaced into mutual positions in which the roll toothings engage in a determined position such that in a stable mutual position each tooth of each roll is symmetrically enclosed between four teeth of the opposite roll, characterised in that the teeth having broken edges are additionally provided with a flattened point, the amount of flattening being 5 to 25% of the tooth height.
  2. Device according to claim 1, where one roll is capable of being driven while the other one is freely rotatable and capable of being driven by the first one through engagement of the roll toothings, characterised in that the freely rotatable roll is arranged with axial play.
  3. Device according to claim 1 or 2, characterised in that in the stable mutual positions, the rolls interpenetrate with maximum penetration depth.
  4. Device according to one of claims 1 to 3, characterised in that the rolls comprise teeth of different heights, the freely rotatable roll preferably comprising the lower teeth.
  5. Device according to one of claims 1 to 4, characterised in that means for a preliminary mutual orientation of the rolls are provided which engage in each other when the rolls are joined or which act as a gear allowing a certain play between the two rolls.
  6. Device according to one of claims 1 to 5, characterized by means allowing to cancel the mutual mobility of said rolls when the determined mutual position of engagement is attained, e.g. by cancelling the mutual axial play or by engaging a gear connected between the rolls.
  7. Method for the operation of the device according to claim 1, characterised in that in permanent stationary operation, the rolls are operated in a relative position in which each tooth in the contact area of each roll is enclosed at least approximately symmetrically between four teeth of the other roll, and in that at least during start-up, the rolls are set into rotation and brought together in order to obtain a determined, stable mutual position of engagement of the rolls in which they remain in permanent operation.
  8. The method of claim 7, characterised in that after having attained the stable position of engagement, the rolls are locked in this mutual position by canceling their mutual play in the axial and/or in the circumferential direction.
